Is Redshift's Latest Gravel Bar Truly Top Shelf?

I thought that Redshift Sports had designed the perfect gravel bar in their Kitchen Sink model. That’s why I was distinctly underwhelmed when they invited me to try their latest creation - The Top Shelf bar. After all, how could they improve on perfection? In this episode I look at the new design and test it on Wendy’s Liv Devote. I shall also be fitting this to my Tempest Titanium, but I have to wait until another new product arrives.

Interesting idea from RedShift. They make good gear. Not cheap, but the design and quality is first rate. I was pretty well sold on getting a Kitchen Sink bar (no loop), with 25mm of rise. But, due to price and availability issues in Hong Kong, I ended up with a 480mm Surly Truck Stop bar that offered 30mm of rise. It was a bargain and, combined with a modest 80mm, 7 degree rise stem, it seems to do the job. The rise is plenty for me, and I'm 61! I still fitted the RedShift Top-Grips -- they make quite a difference in terms of comfort. Although, the fatter top section does make wrapping them a bit more fiddly. Cheers

Drop bar with inbuilt riser... That could tempt me to actually use a drop bar. I'm always use road with flat bar Honestly I think all the redshift gear is great for ergonomics.. If you need it.. It's great. If you don't, it's an expensive gadget Most people would benefit even though they don't know it

Thanks, John, much appreciated. Redshift kit isn’t cheap but quality and innovation come at a price. And when it’s considered what we pay for a bike, then it’s quite a small percentage of that. We will be coming through East Yorkshire on our Edinburgh ride so if you’re around it would be good to meet up. We plan to be riding the Scarborough to Beverley leg on Thursday 19th May.

I just ordered a top shelf 70mm bar for my gravel /touring bike and I am really looking forward to trying it out as I have wrist and neck issues. I am also thinking about the post and stem suspension set up that they make. 👍

I rode my Ribble, yesterday, which doesn’t have the Shockstop stem, and immediately noticed the harder ride on gravel. Fortunately it has the Shockstop seatpost so one half of me was comfortable 😀

Looks great just ordered them, I have to get the 44cm width bars as live in terrace house, and passage between houses is too narrow for wide bar's, used to have butterfly bars on a bike, and had to loosen handlebar and twist to get down passage. Don't really want to keep doing that on my bikes now.

this is an old idea that has been ignored for many years but I'm glad to see companies finally getting away from the idea that the best bike is the one that just won the tour de France and giving non competitive riders a bit more choice

I’ve just fitted mine, Colin, and they look great. Test ride on Tuesday but as they should be even more comfortable than the Kitchen Sink ones I don’t expect anything but success. I’ve also tried the front bikepacking bag and that’s a perfect fit. Wendy is still loving hers.

Great video as usual and the bars look great but I usually ride with a 36cm bar as I was told the bar width should match your shoulder width, therefore do you think the wider bars would make my shoulders ache as this would happen even when I had a 38cm width bar. Wendy’s bars just looked so wide! Thanks 😅

Thanks, Linda. I would say that if you’re comfortable with your setup then don’t change it. The bars matching the shoulder width advice seems to have been formed when road racing was the main cycling sport, and makes sense for that. However, with the advent of mountain bikes, bars became wider as they provided great control on the rough stuff. When gravel bikes appeared they kept the same bar width but used flared drops to improve control. That’s all very well but we don’t ride in the drops most of the time. This is why Redshift designed the Kitchen Sink bar, of which I have the 50cm version. Far from giving me shoulder pain, it actually cured mine. I was concerned I’d over specified the width but fell in love with them in the first mile. This is why Redshift inviting me to try a new bar didn’t excite me. Having looked at it in depth, it has the benefits on the Kitchen Sink but with the additional feature of the raised height, which will help on the long rides we have planned this year. The design would allow you more space to move your hands around into different positions, which can help alleviate shoulder discomfort. It sounds like you don’t need to make any changes so best to stay as you are. But if you felt there was a need, bear in mind their 90 day return guarantee. Finally, I’m sure Wendy will also give you her opinion.

Hi Linda - I was not sure I was going to like wider bars but was amazed at the comfort and stability. The drops are so much nicer to use as it’s not the same reach down as on my Liv bars. I never went on the drops before. What’s also interesting is they didn’t feel wide when riding.

Hello Roy, hope you are well, I was the one that told you about Redshift over 2 yrs ago when I bought the stem from Redshift, I got the seatpost as well later. I was very interested in the Kitchen sink handlebars but have just seen your video of Wendy and the Topshelf bars, I do get a sore neck when I go on the drops on my Cannondale Topstone gravel E bike so maybe the Topshelf would suit better, my local bike dealer are happy to fit bars for me and extend brake and gears cables so I only want to do this once. What do you think. Thanks Alastair

Well firstly, Alastair, I must again thank you for the introduction to Redshift. Neither of us knew where it was going to lead 🙂 I fitted my Top Shelf bar over the weekend and did my first ride with it today. As I have said, I love the Kitchen Sink, but now love Top Shelf more. I miss the KS bag, but they will soon offer one for the TS. I would say the only choice is width and height. I have the 50cm width and get on very well with it. Wendy went wider (44cm) and I was concerned as she is small, but she loves it. As far as height goes, I went for 50mm but feel I could have gone for 70mm with no problem. As you are getting neck pain when on the drops, I would think the 70mm would be best. Width would depend on your body shape. I am broad in the chest so 50cm is ideal for me. They also offer a 47cm. With their return guarantee, you could set the bar up without levers and get a feel for it, exchanging it if you need a different size. I hope this helps.

Hi Roy I went ahead and ordered the Topshelf bar this morning in 47cm and 70mm, also the top and bottom grips plus black tapes. The 15% discount went through fine as well, so all in was £199. I will take up the offer from my local bike dealer to fit it all, I think the brake hoses and gear cable will need to be longer, they are one of the biggest bike shops in Scotland , called Pedal .Power, 3 miles from here in West Calder, Jonny the owner used to be a mountain bike champion. Endura clothing HQ and their original factory are 4 miles away in other side of Livingston. Thanks Alastair

@alastaircomfort1034 that’s good, Alastair. Good plan with the cables as they needed lengthening with the move to Kitchen Sink, and the move to Top Shelf saw me rerouting those cables as they were a little too tight with the 50mm rise. Sounds like you have a gem of a bike shop up there.

Good morning Roy, since my last message I have collected bike with top Shelf bars fitted, I had to turn the bottom grips a bit, but it all feels nice after a short trip yesterday, I think I am moving faster now with my arms wider apart, I am putting hands on bottom hoods a lot more and variety of hand positions now, my shop had to change gear cable inner and outer and rear brake hose, all in for work in shop was £ 82.
