You don't know it. Warsaw is in the top 3 vegan cities in the world in various rankings. It's surpassed only by London and Los Angeles. Enter vegan food Warsaw.

Gotta love the prices in Poland, it's one of the countries where you really get value for money. The size of that Zapiekanka is staggering, that things is a meal in itself, can't imagine anyone still being hungry after that! It was nearly as long as my Rosso Corsa Ferrari. Another great video, you guys are nailing it in Poland!!

@@WITYTRAVELS I read a few years ago that there are over a million vegetarians in Poland, most of them vegans, with a population of about 40 million. I've been a pescatarian myself for almost 30 years, although these days it's no longer considered a form of vegetarianism

So kompot it basically boiling dried fruit in water with some sugar...no juices added....you can also make kompot from fresh fruit, my grandma used to make kompot from gooseberries.

  • @yakeosicki8965

Kompot can be made from dried fruit. This is what happens in the fall and winter. Kompot is usually made from fresh fruit (or frozen). Fresh fruit is filled with sugar in jars and then pasteurized. In winter, such syrup with fruit is diluted with water and compote is made.

So the thing with traditional Polish vegetarian cuisine is that we do have over a century long tradition of "kuchnia jarska" (older name for vegetarian/vegan food in Polish). The movement started in the same time as a lot of other groups around the world around late 19th century - since then there have been a lot of efforts to create, adapt and mix recipes from traditional Polish cuisine to fit the criteria of vegetarianism. Which mind you wasn't the hardest due to Catholic Church commonly having special fasts that already limited certain types of meats during some holidays and Polish cuisine in general already basing itself on pickled and fresh vegetables as strong side and main dishes. Then with waves of immigration, globalisation and political changes - a lot more options from around the world also has been available, especially in past 20 years. I think a good chunk of normalisation of the vegetarian and vegan diets in Poland is thanks to Milk Bars, which being fast food bars prioritised filling, but cheap meals - with obviously meat being the most expensive produce, which lead to multiple different creations of milk, egg and vegetable dishes, in form of cutlets, dumplings and soups.

You always put sour cream on fried things, as it makes it taste even better than it is. If there are some spices in the sour cream, then, that is a bonus! 😂 I still find it really weird that the states are charging extra for a special milk, if you do not like the regular one. 🤔

  • @WITYTRAVELS

I am here after a holiday meal with a Polish memory dish. If you find places please update HappyCow as that is what I use when I travel. Appreciate your detail on the food/flavors. So nice there is not an upcharge, that is a US thing. Asia did not have upcharge. I have noticed in places where homes are smaller people eat out more and the food prices more reasonable. We also need to keep in mind the COLA differences, it is only better value to some currencies. Numbeo helps sort that out. I grew up in a place near German and Polish immigrants and I miss that food. Must make an effort to find that food.

If I ever go to Poland atleast I know I will not have trouble finding Vegan food. Here in Melbourne we have a vegan festival with lots of food trucks. One of the trucks sells Pierogi, which I look foward to having when I goto to the festival. Unfortunatly it was not on this year, so didn't get to have Pierogi :(

Honestly, not recommending Manekin as a place to eat crepes. These are not traditional Polish-style crepes and I heard many bad things about their employees being treated poorly. Definitely it's better to get crepes at milk bars, since they make homemade food. Polish crepes are totally different than most crepes and def recommend checking them out, especially the ones with cottage cheese or the ones with strawberry jam.

We liked the crepes! And Manekin always had a huge queue outside at every location. That's not good if they treat their employees bad, though. Thanks for the comment!
