Is Our Democracy For Sale + Obama Pops In For Tea | Pod Save The UK

This week Nish and Coco ask if our politics is on sale to those with the deepest pockets? The Conservative Party would love us all to move on from the row around the £15 million donation from Frank Hester, but it’s a story that highlights the often murky world of political funding. Nish and Coco talk to investigative journalist Peter Geoghagen about what the rules are, what donors get for their money, and whether there’s a better way to do it.
Dodgy donations have also cast a bit of a cloud over a momentous week in Welsh politics, which saw the appointment of Vaughan Gething as the first black leader of a European country. Journalist Will Hayward explains why it hasn’t been an easy ride for him so far and why he’s got a rocky road ahead. Plus in other news, MP’s and Lords play ‘ping pong’ with the Government’s Rwanda Bill, and there’s a new name in the Tory leadership frame.
Competent and popular politician spotted at Downing Street shock: Nish and Coco discuss President Obama’ popping in for a cup of tea with Rishi Sunak. Plus a new sighting of Princess Kate raises more questions about the royal PR machine. In this week’s hero and villain, find out why a Glasgow record shop has amused Nish and why a Lord has annoyed Coco.

15 million from this Hester smegger or the Welsh politician who got 200K and I scoffed a bit having heard the other day on a PSA with Tommy Vietor and guest host Addisu Demissie that the Biden campaign is supposed to be getting 2 to 3 BILLION dollars for this years campaign. And who knows if (fingers crossed) Biden will even beat Trump - hope they use that money well but damn that's a lot of money!

Heard from Tommy Vietor and guest host Addisu Demissie on a PSA the other day that the Biden campaign is getting between 2 and 3 BILLION dollars to spend on this election campaign. (Not sure why my first comment got removed but I'll try it again.)

@@musicman5075US population is 5x the UK and the economy is about 7x the UKs. Election spending in the 2020 US election was 470 times more than the UK 2019 election! It's all about the laws governing election spending plus a little that UK elects one national parliament, US elects senate, congress and president.

As a bare minimum we need transparency in political donations. No one should be able to donate anonymously. I would also like to see proper rules around donors having to be living here, or at least entitled to vote here. I would probably disallow corporate donations - they already hire lobbyists when they want to push policy - and limit amounts. We definitely need to keep our elections cheap!

I am confused. When I traveled in the UK we hiked all over the countryside, including private property, where we had to open and close numerous gates, and never once did we have to pay any kind of fee.

What I'm taking away from this is that for the low, low price of £50k/yr, I can berate Rishi Sunak to his face, four times per year.

One solution to buying political access that was tried here in the US and was ironically _too_ successful was a political escrow account. Every dollar given to either party would be accounted for by an outside firm and paid into the party coffers over some _(relatively short)_ time, and in irregular amounts so as to disguise the amount given by any one donor. Basically it made impossible to determine who gave how much and when, and it would be extremely difficult to buy access because the party couldn't tell who was actually paying them. The result was that donations dried up to almost nothing. Just disguising the source of the donations made it very clear that the actual purpose of the donations was bribery. Also, your elections in the UK are unfathomably cheap by American standards. 15 million pounds goes an awfully long way.

oh yeah, vastly cheaper than in the states. Granted we've got a lot less distance to travel, plus we're too apathetic as a country to treat anyone other than a couple politicians with pop-star status, so anything in the style of a US Presidential campaign rally or event would be incredibly awkward to try and run in the UK. If anything, less money in our politics just makes the corruption more embarrassing.

For years we've been governed by people who have given the thinnest lip service to the idea that they're representing the public. Instead they govern for the few, the wealthy and connected all the while deconstructing the NHS, increasing the gap between rich & poor, protecting their own interests as landlords in our broken housing and renting system and making sure they do enough favours so there's a job with a massively inflated salary where they can do sweet FA outside Parliament. There is a problem with the welfare state in this country and it's the already wealthy that are given money hand over foot while the ones who need it don't even get enough to live and are under the constant threat of it being removed. Just as a younger Sunak declared with disdain that he didn't know any poor people, these Tories and their friends sneer at the vast majority of Brits for lacking their privilege. And when one of the largest ever Tory donors is rewarded with £135m in NHS contracts it should be considered quid pro quo unless proven otherwise. The right to the benefit of the doubt disappeared long ago.

I just loved how former President Barack Obama walked into Downing Street after so long away like he owned the place. 😂 Such a confident swagger and pose, like "Dad's home!" 😎 Love the show, especially seeing as the only way one can follow current events these days is through the medium of comedy! Like Henry VIII being given bad news by his "favourite fool" Will Summers. [No offence intended to Nish & Coco].

In 2020 I asked God in absolute faith about Revelation 17:10-11 and was answered. Obama is the 8th He will do Daniel 11:21 and on because it is him. Because of what happened in 2020 saying what would happen to my mum and dad with words that where not my own that they would not last the 1st lockdown and then have it happen because I had things like this happen all my life I was in a place of brokenness and had a contrite heart and asked about Revelation 17:10-11 the Holy Spirit answered and gave the understanding that this was the same as Daniel 11:19-21. Long story short Obama will use what happens to Biden to get back in power. This is not my opinion my thought where not this but I put self to the side and asked in faith like we are told to do and I received to my shock. If you have a waring you must warn. There is no pride in this I don't get pleasure out of this but when you where warned what is coming you must warn. For the full post to be said I need a comment under this YuTB is stopping my post I am on my 3rd chan warning for over two years. My old initial post is geeing hid so I had to say things differently for this to be seen again.

I find it extremely disagreeable that you guys seem to be suffering the same thing as we do in the US (and I would venture to guess lots of other places) where money seems to have had an extremely corrosive effect on politics and how it seems to have even become normalized to some degree (as witnessed by the Tory politician's response where she basically said, yes, we apologize, keep the money and keep going... wtf).

  • @lindsaymarksmith2677

Trump was Daniel 11:19, Biden is Daniel 11:20, Obama soon will be Daniel 11:21 and on. Revelation 17:10-11 KJV Trump=sixth Biden=seventh Obama=eighth & of the seven the fifth head and the eighth. I keep warning what the Holy Spirit said to me in 2020 after I humbled myself even if it falls on deaf ears. This is not an opinion or interpretation from me it was the Holy Spirit that said this himself after I humbled myself after what happened to my mum and dad in 2020 believing as a child trusting God fully like a child does a parent and that small still voice the Holy Spirit answered me. I need a comment to post it on so it can be seen. Comment for the full post I cant post it 1st or YT will hide it. And now they are hiding some posts that go with it.
