    PCIe 5.0 is not going to be mainstream anytime soon I guess. Gen 4.0 SSDs are still not quite as cheap, Gen 5.0 prices are absurd. And they don't give any performance uplift to the system whatsoever, unless you really need these machines for really heavy file transfers.

    I have the same Gen 7 machine you reviewed, except with AMD processor (6800H). That third USB-C / USB4 port is magical- I have a dual 4K-60 hub plugged into it, so for everything that’s NOT gaming, I turn off the dGPU, and run the internal display plus 2 4K monitors from the AMD iGPU, in silent mode. Typical total power draw at the wall for this is 23 watts. And yeah, it’s silent. It’s my third gaming laptop, and the first I’ve actually liked. I gave the previous two away just to be rid of them (Dell and HP). Max power draw when gaming is 230 watts, when running a GPU benchmark at the same time as a CPU benchmark. But this is pretty close to the power draw when I use it for VR. It is such a good machine.

    How do you turn off dGPU when doing basic tasks without using battery saver mode?

  • @ahgflyguy

    @ahgflyguy

    2 ай бұрын

    @@penssytestsy9581 set the graphics mode to hybrid auto or hybrid iGPU. That will then make it so the dGPU shuts off completely. You’ll know it has shut off completely because the dGPU will stop showing up at all in the task manager. This is called ejecting the dGPU. If it won’t elect correctly, try updating your Nvidia drivers. Any time it is NOT ejected and you’re on battery, it is drawing 20 to 30 watts.

    Have you seen the T14 Gen 5 announcement? r/Thinkpad seems to be hyped about it. It's great to see a big company openly talking about repairability (it's probably partially due to EU having a repairability mandate effective 2027, so they are kinda prepping for it)

    From what I saw in the reviews that are out right now and the specifications for the 2024 model. The chassie is slightly different with this time the keyboard deck also being metal (2023 model has a plastic keyboard deck) and the screen also now has 100% dci-p3 which is pretty nice. So, cpu isn't the only thing that is changed in the new model. There are some minor quality of life improvement in the 2024 model.

  • @TechGuyBeau

    I’ve already used the new model at CES. Yes there are some extremely minor tweaks but they are extremely similar. Also performance will see almost no difference (14th gen vs 13th Gen is negligible uplift). Overall the chassis formfactor and performance is basically the same with some very very minor tweaks

    Hello, thank you for these videos, I'm looking for a notebook and I have chosen different models: Lenovo Legion Slim 5 14.5 vs Asus G14 2024 vs Legion Slim 7 with Intel (I couldn't find the AMD at a good price) all with 4060 graphics. Any recommendations? I like the slim 14 and the size is perfect but the sound is bad approximately 1500 euros the slim 7 has intel with better sound with a 16 screen it is not oled I think the version I saw at the price is the 240hz one 1800 euros and finally the asus G14 is about 2000 euros and has good sound thanks and regards

    Very tough . Forget the asus machines The slim 7 and slim 5 OLEDs were my favourite laptops of last year. I’m still torn on which I prefer. If you are okay with the larger screen (or prefer it) I still might give the edge to the slim 7. However if you want something a touch more portable get the OLED legion and call it a day. They are both so damn nice there is no wrong decision

    Beau, because I trust your experience and your guts, for some full stack web dev for front / back end development (not the heaviest loads, Editor, Browser tabs, maybe 1 light VM), I lately have been looking at these 3 machines. Mostly because they are more affordable for what you get compared to Thinkpads. I will be using mostly off-desk; on my lap, on a random table, maybe even in bed and on trips. Which one would you recommend? I will only do light low-res gaming very occasionally on them. So in the Netherlands I can get these: - Yoga Pro 9i 16" MiniLED 2024, 32GB, Ultra9, RTX4060 for gorgeous display and screen real estate (wanted 64gb but forces me to upgrade to the useless 4070, even a 4060 is kinda luxury) @ ~2070 euros + 3Y premier support onsite - Yoga Pro 7i 14" OLED 120hz 2024, Ultra7, 32GB, RTX4050 @ ~1550 euros + 3Y premier support onsite - Yoga Slim 7 Gen 8 14" OLED 90hz, Ryzen 7840S (up to 50W), 32GB, iGPU 780M @ ~1150 euros + 3Y premier support onsite

    The middle one seems the odd man out. I have the 2024 9i yoga coming on Thursday, it’s easily the most premium, but I’ll need a few days to review. Last years was amazing, so addressing the battery life alone makes it the best here. It’s a big bigger than you might think, 16” MacBook Pro size. The third option is also extremely nice. If you don’t need dedicated graphics and prioritize portability it will be great, and is MUCH cheaper. If cost isn’t too much factor and you don’t mind the size first is easily the best. Otherwise get the AMD machine I will have a review of the 9i as soon as I can as I will be prioritizing it upon arrival. I bought it to be my own daily driver so I have high hopes

    @@Burbananathe middle one is still a killer laptop, but you are paying about 400-500 euro over the AMD model for a 4050. The 4050 is a good gpu but that’s a lot for a gpu that you won’t really be using. If you do plan on doing some gaming it’s a better guy for sure The 9i pro I got was about $2300 CAD.

In my country this is the only worthwhile Legion model tbh, as the 4050 one has a 45% NTSC screen and the 4070 ones are just far too expensive to justify the price to performance. And yes, the 4060 configuration is available in only the 300 nits 1600p display with 100% sRGB lol.
