Dickey addresses a comment by one of our viewers in response to a keratin video we posted previously. The viewer asks why stylists often use the term "unmanageable" to characterize natural hair. For reference, the video can be found here: • Is Keratin Safe On Nat...

Thank you for the information. I just found you 2 weeks ago. I am a 4c. I am over 60, I did my first wash n go last week. I was shocked how well it turned out. I have been natural a few years now. I do flat twist, afro or braids. It is so nice to add this to my routine.

My hair is manageable. It suits my active and traveller lifestyle. I can skip the salon for 6 months and it looks good with little effort. I think the issue for most women with type 4 hair-kinky, coily, afro hair is that they don't actually know how to manage it. I know people with type 1 hair shampoo, condition and blow dry daily... even if their hair is 24 inches long. So they literally invest an hour every day to do their hair. But for some reason, we with type 4 hair have been led to believe that Our hair must only be done once a month and we have to spend 8 hours ( wash day )doing it. What I know about my 4c hair is that the longer I go without shampoo, deep conditioner, leave-in conditioner and detangling and trim, the more unmanageable my hair becomes. So I apply leave in daily; I shampoo, deep condition and detangle weekly. I trim every 3-4 months..even if I have to do it myself because my stylist is on vacay! I also use the right tools and techniques..I detangle on damp hair with a medium-toothed seamless comb after I have steamed my hair and put it into 20 sections. My stylist sections my hair probably more than 20 times so why these ladies think that they can detangle 4 sections properly is beyond me.

I totally agree. I’ve been natural for over 15 years now. My hair is kinky-coily and once I learned what products worked for my hair…it changed the game. I can do styles with ease. 🤌🏽

@@sh3rrylov3 At this stage I don't even have to use "ethnic" only hair products. I know how to read the ingredients to get what I want out of the product, regardless of brand. I even got some Johnson and Johnson baby hair detangler working for me! Back in the day, I knew adults and teenagers who used baby shampoo. Everyone has to find out which product ingredients their hair likes. Doing my hair now is simple self care. Shampoo, deep condition, apply leave in detangler and leave in cream condition and if I'm too tired put it in two french braids. One hour. I have been known to shampoo Friday, tie my hair up; re-wet, deep condition Saturday and detangle Sunday because life be life-ing!

If people follow what you say, their hair will be manageable. I. South African and people wearing wash & go have always done your method since the 80s. We didn't know the sense behind what we did. We simply did it cos it worked. I have no major hair issues because of it. I have always cowashes daily and shampooed weekly. I don't struggle with tangles AT ALL I wear my hair shortish and it takes me literally 30s to comb. I don't have excessive dryness and I need a Monthly trim to keep my hair in the style, an angled Bob. I am 56, I don't want long hair. Your method is Def quicker than anybody else's recommendations. Dunno what an hour long wash day is.if I didn't deep condition, my wash day would be less than 5 mins excluding dry time. I have to add I have 3b hair but my niece has 4b bra strap length hair and her wash day is oh so slightly longer since she's been doing things like you say. We deep condition and get on with housework or laundry or wear a pretty headwrap or hat and go out. Dry time isn't a major issue either. We do something around the house and keep busy doing life. Natural hair is really not as hard as some people make it out to be ..... They just have to follow the Dickey way

Can women with 3C to 4C textures grow their hair to great lengths, i.e waist length, by doing daily wash and go's? Popular KZreaders with long natural hair swear by protective styling and claim wash and go's are terrible for our hair type. I personally NEVER had any success with length retention by doing protective styling. Sometimes I feel like giving up.

To corroborate his answer, it's not just about the style but how it was prepped and how it was taken care of during the duration of the style.

Thank you. How can I maintain moisture in my low density high porosity type 3 hair? I feel washing daily is excessive.

I like to mist my hair with water day and night and seal the moisture in with Jamaican black castor oil on days I don’t co-wash. I pick my hair for shape but am careful not to comb through the ends. If you shower everyday it doesn’t hurt to let the steam hydrate your hair so it can stay soft ❤

Steam. Apply a leave-in mist or leave-in lotion or leave-in cream, and wrap your hair in a plastic cap and a hot towel for 20 minutes daily. This is what my trichologists gave me as a routine to follow. They also recommend a weekly gentle, moisturizing shampoo and a protein and moisture-balanced deep conditioner for 20 minutes with the cap and hot towel. I don't think you need to wash your hair daily. I sometimes swim every day and use the spa but I don't shampoo every day. I co-wash when I swim, excessively sweat or get muddy or sandy hair. Once a week I shampoo. My hair is high density, high porosity, ultra-fine, ultra-dry 4c pen spring coils.
