Is Keratin Safe On Natural Hair?

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Since Hair Rules announced that it would no longer offer relaxers but continue to provide keratin treatments, we've had many questions on how safe keratin treatments are. Dickey explains the difference between traditional relaxers and non-formaldehyde keratin treatments, and what they do specifically to natural textures.

I only visited his salon once because I have relocated, but his products and guidance on cowashing and keeping my hair moisturized now has my hair longer and in better health than it has been my entire adult life. No more guesswork 😊 I am a forever fan ❤

    1. Aren't relaxers akaline and not acid though? 2. Don't you have to use a LOT of heat to set the Keratin treatment initially?

Just did my first keratin treatment last weekend. I'm loving the results so far. I did it at home with a formaldehyde free product, and did flat iron heat just to 410 F. I'm probably going to do it every 3-4 months. Not to silk press, other than when I apply it, but just to have smoother blowouts, which is how I normally wear my hair.

I do this! And then i get silk presses professionally after every long term protective style, wear for 3-4 weeks, then back to a natural style…and I still have my curls (a tad looser) and my straight hair lasts until the next wash day (i do use blow driers and curling irons as needed but i don’t re-flat iron). Hello Dickey, I would like to ask a question as a new stylist. Why do some hair textures get softer during a blow out, while others get harder? My educated guess is that this is a porosity issue, but I'm unsure. Thank you so much!

It is my understanding that protein treatments are for damaged (or relaxed) hair. My hair isn’t damaged and I do everything I can to keep it that way. However, many, many hair influencers with natural, undamaged hair *do* use protein treatments every 3-6 months or whatever. Why? It makes me wonder if I’m missing something. Does everyone really *need* a protein treatment now and then?

Love your videos and personality; however, please explain this term manageable that keeps being thrown around (not only by you but a few other stylists and influencers as well). Are the coils and kinks that naturally grow out of our scalps considered unmanageable and always needs to be altered in some extreme way to be considered manageable?

You know what he means by manageability. It means that it is easier to style. 😂 There's no snarky comment or side eye. It's the reason why some long-term naturals either relax or texturize . That doesn't fit all, folks, though..
