Is my vertigo "BPPV"? (Top 3 signs for BPPV)

If you've been suffering from vertigo (the sensation of spinning or movement), you may have heard about BPPV, which is a very common cause of vertigo.
But how do you know if BPPV is the cause of your vertigo?
In this video, I'll explain the top 3 signs that indicate that BPPV is the underlying cause of your vertigo.
If you figure out that you have the most common type of vertigo, which is "posterior canal BPPV", here's a video where I explain how to use the "Epley Maneuver" to treat your vertigo: • The "Epley Maneuver" -...
Also, if you have horizontal BPPV instead, here are two video links that will help you diagnose and treat it:
- Video #1: How to Diagnose Horizontal Canal BPPV - • How to Diagnose Horizo...
- Video #2: How to Treat Horizontal Canal BPPV - • How to Treat Horizonta...

I had this for more than 10 years and doctors were pretty worthless and dismissive and even abusive. I moved to a different state and I had to go to the ER because of the severe vertigo and ER doctor diagnosed me with BPPV and arranged an appointment with an ENT. They did the up maneuver and it worked like a charm for me. I’m comfortable believe that one and 20 doctors are competent and compassionate.

Remember that 50% of everyone you meet is below average….including doctors. And what do they call the person who graduated medical school with the lowest GPA? Doctor. Doctors are more likely to believe a crummy doctor than an honest patient. After all, how can a patient POSSIBLY know anything about their own problem? So they throw a pill at you and shove you out the door, spending virtually no time actually analyzing whether the symptoms really fit the conclusion they jump to. Many of them truly think their patients are idiots. Cookbook answers are quicker(and more profitable) than actual analysis. Knew someone who spent months trying to get a doctor to listen. He had pain in a certain area. He would tell them no, you can’t be right because I hurt HERE not way over there. He had to travel all the way to Minnesota to find out he had torn his diaphragm and have it fixed. Doctors that listen and care are gold. Good luck.

Similar experience with a doctor that seemed quite aggravated that I came in for this. Referred me to chiropractor and went to two different ones that wanted to just sell me memberships and additional appointments. Found a video online and fixed it myself and only have to revisit the maneuver from time to time.

I had an experience with this just two nights ago. I was lying flat on my back, turned to the left and bam, hit me like a hammer. My eyes were closed so once I turned over it felt like my body was falling off a cliff, I opened my eyes and the room was spinning. It only lasted about 20-30 seconds and afterwards I got this nauseating hot flash throughout my body. Two days later I feel much better but I still have this lingering, almost car sickness type of feeling that won’t quite go away. I definitely appreciate the information in this video!

    1. Sudden and intense symptoms of dizziness for 10-30 seconds. 2. Positional: what leads to the dizziness? Typically movement of head. Tipping head back/bending forward causes it. As well as going in and out of bed. Could be horizontal as well with rolling in bed, but less likely. 3. Can be related to head/fall trauma. (Even just falling on your hip, not always related to your head being hit)

What a great video! Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge. This morning when I woke up I was overcome with these dizziness symptoms. It took several minutes but it stabilized. So now I'm researching this event and found your video. My symptoms closely align with your description of BPPV. Naturally I want to know what caused this, seemingly out of the blue. Research indicates it isn't caused by hearing aids, however, just last night I was trying to get an ill-fitting, cheapo hearing aid into my ear. The "small" earbud felt to large (mom always said I had small ears :) so I was trying to force it in far enough so it stopped popping out. To my question: Could this have possibly caused the sudden BPPV? I tried the Epley Maneuver but I may have to keep at it. The motion of picking something up off the floor seems to bring it on the strongest. Would one of the other maneuvers be more recommended? Thanks again 👍🦻

  • @GordonPhysicalTherapy

You're welcome! No, it's doubtful your hearing aid had anything to do with the BPPV. For a lot of people, it just comes on randomly, with no specific cause. You didn't do anything wrong... it just happens. Self-treatment can be very difficult, so my advice is always to find an experienced vestibular therapist in your area and have them help. During the middle of my first pregnancy I would experience gnarly vertigo. I always figured it was pressure on nerves that'd never endured pressure before. However, almost 4 years later, i'm experiencing a very different kind of vertigo. I became concerned when it wasn't just a 'here and there' experience. It's often, random, and causes me fatigue and stress. So I talked with a lady at the grocery store who told me about crystals in my ears that might be out of wack. I'm glad i didn't brush it off and forget it. I sincerely had to idea of this. I'm so grateful that I've found such an abundance of knowledge on this subject. Hi Gordon, I have a question. I have easily gotten motion sickness since I was a child when riding in cars (I’m 24 now), but now I seem to be having that same motion sickness almost constantly throughout the day. It gets much worse with certain movements such as looking up or just moving around the house a lot. Does this still sound like BPPV even though it’s now becoming constant? This more severe vertigo also started after I got my 2nd vaccine, but not sure if it has anything to do with that as my vertigo seemed to be getting progressively worse anyway. Thanks!

As a former military medic, I was trying to conjure up every medical knowledge I have in order to find out what was going on. HI, Gordon. Excellent video. I experienced the first 2 of the 3 symptoms of BPPV. I had a SUDDEN onset of the room whirling as I laid down in bed. At that point, for the next 3 weeks (because trying to get appointments post-COVID is close to IMPOSSIBLE!), each time that I tried to turn over in bed, I would have symptoms again. I adjusted by moving SLOWLY, 45 degrees at a time, to get turned. I also experienced vertigo in the shower when trying to rinse shampoo out of my hair in the shower and when I was sitting in a chair and someone came up and stood next to me, so I had to look up to interact with them. My first PT session was HORRIBLE (lie on right side, looking upward, once settled, sit up and lie on my left side looking down). I had to hold onto the table bc I felt like i was being flung off the table. At that point, I was unable to continue. Next time, it took 3 times to clear. After checking out info, I found that, in one reference, 1 of 5 people with COVID experience BPPV. I had JUST gotten over a bout with COVID. Since then, I have heard of several others who have had the same symptoms after having COVID. It has ben a wild ride. I basically lost the entire month of March with COVID and BPPV.

I set my sights on Six and we just went for it. The first and second time on day 2 were brutal, but symptoms dramatically decreased on the third time. The next time through was a breeze. It took a couple of days before I trusted that it wouldn't return. I'm having my Vitamin D checked with my next PCP appt and will be taking a Vitamin D3 supplement just to be pro-active.

Hi Gordon thanks for the video, I had a vertigo attack recently and have a few questions: 1. I was going to physical therapy for posture correction and was told to do exercises by bending my head backwards a lot….many sets. Then, I went to the dentist and spent maybe 2.5 hours in a chair with lots of drilling. Few days after I woke up with really bad spinning. could bending backward exercises coupled with dentistry have dislocated my ear crystals ? 2. I did some BPPV exercises and it went away, but several days later I developed nausea and it has been a second week where I still have nausea but my head is not spinning anymore. Also I feel like it affects my right eye, like it becomes blurry and weird feeling. Is it still BPPV or should I be concerned that it can be something else? Thanks so much 🙏

Thank you for describing the symptoms. Mine are all exactly the same as you describe, especially the sudden, initial one which threw me totally out of balance and I really got scared. It happened when I turned from one side of the bed to the other i.e. lying on my side and turning to the other side. This has been going on now for the past two+ years. I did try the Epley manoeuvre on my own and I had visions of the whole universe spinning and fell off my treatment table. Never again! Then I took up Dr Brandt-Daroff's manoeuvre for several weeks and it did calm it down..... but it never went away completely. I was finally referred to ENT dept. My ears were checked, my nose and throat, sound tests were done and everything was fine. The doctor then did the wretched Epley manoeuvre again and looked at my eyes and said I did not have BPPV.....but the whole test threw me off balance. I felt dizzy for the next few days, sometimes nauseous until it settled down. I will never do the Epley manoeuvre again. My vertigo has not gone away. I am too scared to look up, down, and sometimes sideways movements trigger it too. I know I have BPPV, but the so-called ENT specialist thought I was fine. I am not fine. It is still there, not at the same intensity all the time, but if triggered with the movement of the head, it is there. I dont get ringing noise in my ears or anything of the sort. I have had vertigo in the past, but they have gone away within a few days. This one is still with me, but does not stop me from leading a 'normal' life.

I went to a physical therapist several years ago because in my research that's who I found treats it. He said during the maneuver I also didn't have the rapid eye movement, but I have all other symptoms. It always starts when I'm lying in bed and turn over to the right. I can't stand the symptoms or the treatment. There has to be something that can be done to treat it without making you dizzy and nauseous. I've been dealing with it for decades and now I just try to move carefully until it finally goes away.

I had my first attack in the middle of the night in 2012. Thought it was blood pressure, called the paramedics. Did some research and discovered it was bbpv. Did the epley manoeuvre at home and sorted it. Came back a month later, sorted. It's now 2023 and I've got another bought. The best advice I can offer you is do the epley when your ready for bed. Then sleep on your good side without turning over. Keep your head vertical the next day. And you might need to repeat it, but only once in 24 hours!!

I am on bed rest for two weeks now. I am thinking I have sinus and migraine problems. I had strange health problems since 2008. I was diagnosed with high blood pressure when I graduated in 2008. I had so many symptoms and I went to many doctors, and still have symptoms. Right now is a new symptom. I am dizzy and lightheaded since February 9 now. I had blood tests done and the doctor said on Friday I am a little dehydrated, which does not make sense to begin with because I drink lots of water. I went back on Monday yesterday, I told him it feels like I am rocking back and forth on a boat, and he said it sounds like vertigo. I quit my amlodipine and switched to propranolol this past weekend. So far, the propranolol is doing better maintaining my blood pressure. I am still lightheaded. I suspect it is sinuses because when I went to the dentist, they kept saying I have serious sinuses in my head. I had no clue sinuses could be this bad. I wonder if these are the root of all my health problems since 2008. I don't have any pain though. I have a cardiologist appointment on February 27 next week, and my ENT otolaryngologist appointment is this coming February 24 on Friday. I do have tonsils that have been swollen since 2018 or 2017, but the reception girl said they only do one case at a time, so I am going in for this vertigo and sinus problem first. I can't get work done and this is my first major job that has gone over a year on contract. My boss said I could go on disability, but I told her I will try to work next week. I don't know of anyone else is having these symptoms. It came out of nowhere. The vertigo and dizziness. I also searched something called cervical instability as a possibility. It can come from poor posture and being on computers, phones, and laptops too much. I am leaned over on my bed on my laptop now. I have been more ever since my desktop went down in 2021. It can't be from lack of exercise because I exercise everyday. Update: I went to the ENT and she suspects it is my inner ear. I failed the drunk balance test and the Fukuda (I think it is called) test. I opened my eyes and I turned 90 degrees to the right. I definitely have a balance problem. I have been dizzy for three weeks now. The doctors are saying it is vertigo. I have multiple appointments next week for MRI, inner ear, and sinus scans. I have my cardiologist appointment tomorrow.

My first experience with vertigo happened in bed while I was sleeping, I turned in my sleep and got the worse dizziness I have ever had, I feel from my bed down to the floor and when I tried to see, everything was just spinning and also feeling like I wanted to throw up. I did the eply thing, that helped for a while, but now I get it laying flat and also moving my head back/forward. One thing that I have notice is that when I get anxiety attacks, that trigger the vertigo. At this point I don't know what to do about it, doctor's just confirm, yes you have vertigo and tell me to do the eply thing, but that doesn't work with the back/forward thing. I have had this problem now for over ten years. Sorry for the rambling.

Gordon, I hesitate to write this as i might jinx myself. I was haunted by vertigo. It would put me on the floor with no thought of place or time. Terrible. My GP referred me to a TP. He was moving my head and neck about. I asked why and he said that there was a school of thought that blood flow to the brain could be a factor. I accepted that as true and that day began running. Not to far but i always finished with a kick so my head would turn red from the effort. I had one vertigo episode thereafter but it has now been about 5 yrs of no vertigo....but i continue to run modest, but with effort, distances. I'm knocking wood, and maybe, just maybe, someone else will benefit from my experiment. Thanks for recognizing how debilitating vertigo is.

I've been dealing with this for 7 months. I am unsure as I can see several possible theories. This happened to me 3x now. The first time was about 7 months ago and this one was different than the other 2. I woke up ( they all begin in bed with waking) but this one i sat up in bed and I noticed the wall was slowly slanting downwards like a weird fun house.. not fun. I thought my eyes were just tired or not focused yet so I kept rubbing them and it didn't stop.I got anxious and went to look over to my side to grab water and BOOM I started to feel like I was spinning and it was worse. I realized I couldn't look or move in any direction. If i stayed still I didn't feel I was moving but the walls still moved downward. this lasted 3-4 hours!!!! the 2cd time was a few months later and I woke up okay but began to sit up recline and looked at my phone and BOOM I felt so dizzy I had to close my eyes and I literally felt I was falling backwards and down so hard and fast i even felt my legs go up and down hitting the bed and I sat up and opened my eyes and it stopped but I felt off a while. Last time was last week. Again woke in bed and I was on my back and opend my eyes and felt like I was spinning in space in no identifiable direction .. that also lasted only a min tops but leaves you real off for hours. My thing is.. with the 1st time I did feel a full feeling in my ear slightly the night before but it went away and thought nothing of it. After that 1st bout I was so anxious and stuff from sitting for so long I popped my jaw in a stretch and I have TMJ and it popped LOUD and Ive noticed I have ringing in that left side and it hasn't gone away and gets worse and better depending. I know TMJ is a possiblity, but i've had it for decades. I also know this all happens suddenly and with movement so is seems like BPPV I had severe dizziness when pregnant years ago and now im 50 and wonder if its hormonal . AND, because my ear has ringing and in the morning when I walk to the bathroom I hear a swish sound at times in it if this is menieres. It seems like many things and sometimes if i'm too tired just even closing my eyes sitting up and laying down to sleep can make me feel spinning until I open my eyes... YES, a ton of possibilities.. any of it still seem to be BPPV?

  • @GordonPhysicalTherapy

You're absolutely right: there are several possibilities for your symptoms, and BPPV is definitely one of them. I'd recommend seeing an ENT right away or seeing an experienced vestibular PT. They should be able to help you narrow things down so you can figure out your treatment options :-)

Doc what if I am about to sit to my pc going left, i got dizzy suddenly, went to lie down closed my eyes, dizzy stop a little bit then few moments then started again, then stop. Maybe that is under a minute or a little more. Then 3 days after that, and by the way those 3 days i feel off balance, so after 3 days i am at work then i went to do half spin to my left side to get something then i started this extreme sensation dizzines or spinning extreme than the 3 days ago i went to staff room and sit,the vision of my eyes is like kicking going right i cant center it, so i closed my eyes and then it stop. This is mostly likely 30 seconds much shorter than the first, do you think that is bppv? Thanks. After that 17 days ago i am still off balance no more dizzy left or right. Just off balance. If i sit or lie down no like dizzy feeling, but started walking looking left amd right going bend down, its not dizzy but its off? I am getting depressed now. My doctor appointment is this coming wed. Ps. I have ringing in my ears since i was like 15 years old i am 33 now. I have the experience of spinning when i was 12 yrs old i think. I have seen multiple doctors (neurologist, ENT, optometrist, ophthalmologist, otologist, and cardiologist) and no one could give me answers for my chronic dizziness. I was originally told that it was BPPV because I had nystagmus however that resolved and the dizziness still remained. Could it be possible that I still have BPPV? I also got a VNG test that showed I had bilateral ear weakness and moderate hearing loss in my right ear. I was sent home and was told to do vestibular rehabilitation exercises at home but they have made my dizziness worse and it has been 6 long months of doing them with zero improvements. I am really desperate for any advice that you think could help me. I constantly feel like I'm on a boat and always feel lightheaded. I thought it might have had something to do with the full moon (gravity). After that evening I got dizzy every night rolling over to my right side in bed. It also happended when lying down on my bench press to lift weights... it's a real drag feeling dizzy doing something you love! In short, after watching your video I now think this was BPPV from tiliting my head back far in the chair to gaze at the sky. I was able to fix it by getting on all fours while tilitng my head to the floor, and to the side, then lifting my head upward quickly. Is it normal to have it in my 20s? Im male and I had it first during 2019. I was given Serc but no “exercises” were performed to me by ENT. Then it lasted for a week or two and just disappeared. Now it came back and I hope it will last only a week but I still went to the ENT and did some maneuvers, looked at my eyes and said I don’t have BPPV. They always check for nystagmus. I really felt dizzy but ENT said still no BPPV. However I was still again prescribed Serc. Is it advisable to “self medicate” by performing these exercises/maneuvers at home? Btw I really think it is BPPV. It is triggered if I move my head sometimes to both sides or bend sideways. Also I get dizzy when I try to sleep sideways. No hearing loss, no nausea but i have tinnitus in some instances. Also, does it really go away on its own even if you don’t do maneuvers?

I had my first episode 13 years ago, like you said out of the blue doing a yoga class. Since then tilting head back or forward gave me the 30 seconds off balance thing or laying on my right side or with no pillow. About a month ago I had another episode laying in bed, I think I turned to my right. Both episodes lasted a few hours with vomiting, but the next day, I was able to work. I am so reluctant to do it and vomit, that world spinning feeling is the worst! Thank you in advance. Appreciate your content.

You might have some underlying BPPV, but what you're describing is more along the lines of "unsteadiness" or "vestibular hypofunction". I would try some vestibular exercises, such as gaze stabilization (or VOR X1 viewing). I made a video about these exercises not too long ago... let me know if you need me to post the link :-)

I should mention that I've been dealing with recurring dizziness for 5 months. Came on strong and constant in the beginning then settled down. Sometimes it goes away then comes back hits me randomly for a hour or a day then settles down. I did complete vestibular therapy but have reoccurring moments. Would I by chance not have BPPV but vestibular neuritis instead?

I’ve had BPPV a lot but currently have a different less violent dizziness. Are they linked? I’ve started taking vitamin K3 as well as vitamin D3 to get rid of the crystals. I’m thinking the crystals may have gotten smaller so have a different effect?

They could be linked, yes. You could have a more mild version of BPPV, or you could just have some vestibular hypofunction. Have you tested for BPPV lately? It might be worth starting there...

I just started having issues with vertigo about 3 days ago. From the symptoms you describe it almost certainly seems like BPPV. The only outlier is that the very first day it happened it started with getting out of bed and seemed limited to horizontal to vertical orientation changes. However the most severe reaction I had was when lying on the ground that evening while changing oil on my car and I rolled over from stomach to my back. OMG the world started spinning and I felt like I was going to fall off!! Since then the symptoms seem to have shifted to becoming more prevalent and less severe. I am feeling slightly dizzy when doing things like bending over and even when driving and coming to a stop at a red light. I have not had a severe dizzy spell in the last 2 days. I have not tried any of the exercises yet, since it is late right now and I am winding down for bed.

I had vertigo this past week "Benign positional vertigo (BPV)". dizziness when lying down of getting up. I was worried about all the things it could be but I booked an appointment with a Chiropractor expecting it to be back or neck related. Turns out it was an inner ear issue. He moved me into various positions twice and this corrected the position of the inner ear crystals. The dizziness has now gone away.

Hi I first got vertigo when I was lying in my bed and it was very intense like you explained in the video. After about 1 week the constant vertigo feeling went away. A month later I got the symptoms again. This time it went away for a week but unfortunately came back and I’ve had constant vertigo symptoms for about 2 months now. Sometimes when I am lying down on my phone I get a really intense wave of it for about 10 seconds. But I constantly am having vertigo symptoms (which oddly seem to get worse around meal times). Thank you for this video. I’ve been having symptoms of this off and on for 5 years. In between severe episodes I occasionally get a random bout that’s not as debilitating. After my first really bad episode I went to physical therapy where they did the Epley maneuver to fix it and it helped right away pretty dramatically although it took awhile for me to feel completely steady on my feet. A week ago I got my second severe attack and proceeded with the Epley maneuver at home. It seemed to help some but not completely. If I tilt my head back or tip to the right I get that sudden feeling like I’m going to fall, lose my balance, and get dizzy. I went back to physical therapy and she did the Epley on me and I’m still doing it at home but I’m still getting symptoms if I I tilt back or tip my head to the right. I also can’t lay back in bed and have to sleep on my left side.

Yes mine is the horizontal canal…I’ve had this happen before and it was an electrolyte issue. I just rolled over to my other side while sleeping when I felt dizzy which woke me up… I’ve been up now for a while because my stomach started to hurt, I got cold and started not not feel good…I had a concussion three years ago then a couple years later (last year) I barely hit my head inside my vehicle while cleaning the back out and got a super migraine from that little bump … I just took an electrolyte because I’ve been detoxing off sugar and I noticed that sometimes when I’m toxic I have to go potty and once those toxins are out I feel better (dizziness goes away). My mom was diagnosed with Ménière’s disease several years ago and sometimes it will keep her down for days…I can’t even imagine feeling like this for days on end…recently my older brother had an episode of dizziness and the eye twitching and saw a doctor who fixed his issue then it happened again to him…and he had to go back to the doctor who fixed it again. I don’t want to follow in my family’s foot steps so I’m working on getting healthy now. Thanks for the video.

Hi Mr. Gordon, I have had intermittent reoccurring bouts of extreme vertigo for about ten years. They began when I was 12 and have continued to the present (I am now 23). The nature of the episodes has flummoxed every doctor I have seen and so far I have found no explanation or prognosis. I will wake up in the middle of the night with immediate intense vertigo (e.i. it feels like the world is upside down then right-side up and will continue to spin). This will last for 15 to 30 seconds at which time the world appears to steady itself. After this, I will experience dizziness, that severely worsens with any movement, and extreme nausea. These symptoms usually last for six to ten hours and I will sometimes vomit up to six times. Either symptoms will steady after this period of time (i.e. only slightly dizzy and no imminent threat of vomiting) or I will fall asleep after 3 to 4 hours and after I wake up I feel better. I will feel ill for the rest of the day and slight dizziness may persist for a couple days. My neck also tends to feel rather tight but this may be a result of lying or sitting in awkward positions after the initial acute vertigo to try and avoid making dizziness worse or to prevent vomiting. I have seen an ENT who performed the epley but these episodes persisted. I have also seen doctor who specializes in dizziness and vertigo who performed multiple tests to determine wether the symptoms were caused by BPPV. All the tests were negative (indicated no BPPV). There are a few more factors. Not every episode is the same. Some are much worse while others produce less severe vertigo and no vomiting after which I will fall asleep with in a few hours. Also, these have only occurred while sleeping. When episodes first began they would happen once every other month. At its worst it would happen once a month. When I was 19 I had a severe episode but after that I had only a handful of very minor episodes for nearly 3 years. However, a couple of nights ago I had one of my worst ever. I also have a number of other debilitating neurological symptoms (which occur with no dizziness at all) which so far have been unexplained and resistant to any treatment. Because of the unusual nature of my symptoms I have been treated by many integrative medicine and traditional medicine doctors for Lyme disease. I noticed that often after starting a new antibiotic or a new treatment an episode would occur 48 hours or 2 nights after starting the treatment (maybe coincidence but was a pretty regular phenomenon). Also, the day before the last episode I took one beet root powder capsule, which I have taken regularly in the past without any adverse effects. This has made me think that perhaps the episodes are caused by severe sleep related hypotension (I am aware bp normally drops during sleep). Do you think this may be BPPV or is there another potential cause?

I'm sorry to hear how badly this has affected your life. Based on what you said, I'm guessing you don't have BPPV, as your symptoms are much less predictable and don't follow the typical BPPV pattern. I'm not really sure why things are so bad at night, but I have some ideas for you. First idea: have you working with an "upper cervical specialist" chiropractor yet? If not, I would definitely try to find one in your area and see if they can help. Second idea: have you ever tried an anti-inflammatory diet or an "elimination diet"? If not, I think that's worth a try too, just in cause there are a couple foods in your system that your body doesn't agree with. I'm sorry I can't give you a more definitive diagnosis, but those are the two things I would try if I were in your situation. Please keep me posted on how things go. You can also email me at Luke@GordonPhysicalTherapy.com if you'd prefer. Good luck!

Great question, Seth! There are a few differences in symptoms: with Meniere's, you often have ringing in the ears, while there's no auditory component with BPPV. Also, BPPV is much more positional, meaning that you get a sudden wave of vertigo with certain head movements, whereas Meniere's can cause vertigo even when just sitting still. I hope that helps!

I have had vertigo issue that is something like Ménière's disease but not quite. Hearing loss in the left ear, with tinnitus, in both for as long as I can remember and a history of ear infections as a kid. Had both positional tests and I reacted opposite of what I should have (eye movement) but we never found a cause. Went with a low salt diet and working with a dietician and it has worked well but I still have bouts. Mine come on usually when my left ear goes numb and I know something is up. Recently, I found I can take Meclazine/Promethazine quickly, then it will pass by the next morning and I won't have a full blown attack (big time motion sickness/vomiting, can't walk in a straight line etc...). I NEVER got motion sickness before - not once, not ever - loved stuff at amusement parks that made me dizzy - never got sick. This hit me after I turned 54 or so and it was sudden. First attack I could not even watch TV as the movement on the screen caused me more problems. Could not close my eyes, put my head down or back, and basically the only way I could see where I was going was to move my eyes - only my eyes. If I turned my head - bad, bad, bad.

The last 2 visits at the dentist I've experienced nausea as I'm in the chair laying back. After it happened the first time, I took motion sickness medication before I went back in. It didn't help. It takes a few minutes lying back and then the nausea comes on. It lasts for a long time afterwards, almost the rest of the day. I've always avoided lying flat without elevating my head at all because it will bring up nausea. But the dental chair thing is new. Does that sound like BPPV? Thanks for any help

can BPPV also give a sensation like ur in a boat? I kinda have health anxiety and im worried that it might be something serious, but I did have (I think) an ear infection a few weeks ago, and when I move my ear a certain way I can feel some fullness in one ear and sometimes it feels like somethings wet is in there. The dizzy sensation for me feels like I am going left to right, or when I stand as if I am in an elevator thats going down really fast.. also when I sit down it usually goes away and comes back when I stand up or start walking.. what do you think?

BPPV can make you feel like you're on a boat if you're having some residual symptoms. However, if you're having fullness in your ear, you'll want to rule out Meniere's Disease as well. Have you tried any positional testing for BPPV yet? Dix-Halpike or Supine Roll Test?

@@mohammadjaved6628 thank you for those details. In order to make sure the Epley Maneuver is the right treatment option, you need to make sure you have "posterior canal BPPV", which is the most common type of BPPV. Here's a link to the video I made to test for this type of BPPV using the "Dix-Halpike Test": kzread.info/dash/bejne/qIiMkriGf5WeodY.html If you do have posterior canal BPPV, the Epley should work for you. My vision rotates clockwise and jumps back immediately and the attacks last a good 30 seconds to a minute. It almost looks like I'm putting my ear to my shoulder then snapping my head back in a split second. It happened while I was looking my kitten in the eyes, I was on my bed he was on the floor so I had to look down quite a bit. This happened a lot back in summer of 2020 but it lasted upwards of 5 minutes and at some point it just stopped until not too long ago. Only time I can think of my head being hit really hard is when I took a mean ass beating bro punched me at least 50 times in those 30 seconds and I was still standing after somehow. That was one year before this started happening also

Thank you for this informative video! I just experienced this awful condition this past Tuesday evening and it was horrific. Went to the Emergency Department on Thanksgiving night because it just won’t go away. Tried the Epley maneuver at home but too frightening to do alone. The ED doc avoided it because he said it never works. Will see ENT next week. I am also dehydrated. Just increased my Vitamin D supplementation and added ginko biloba to my nutritional plan. Btw, Meclizine puts me in a coma. Can handle upright positions okay but turning the head especially when lying down is deadly. Wicked aggressive nystagmus and spinning sensation. Ty for sharing your knowledge. I pray to be healed from this. 🤍
