    What's the dilemma? Employee receives fertility treatments and receives no pay for those days that she is not at the clinic.

    But you are relying on her being in the office 40 hrs / wk for 50 wk per year. when 'full time' constantly are taking unpaid time off, it strains the schedule, especially in a smaller office.

    @@zerimaryar: If that is in fact true, the caller needs to give the employee an ultimatum: show up as scheduled or find a new job.

    Prepare for her start getting sick on Mondays and Fridays. She'll also start asking you to calculate whether she will have enough PTO by X date.

    Me a bartender.... wtf is PTO ?? ( yes i know what paid time off is. Bartenders just by in large don't receive any sort of benefits unless you're apart of say the casino union)

    If she's out of paid time, give her unpaid time. It doesn't make you not compassionate to not pay for her treatment. Being flexible with her upcoming scheduling IS the compassion

    I work with someone who burns through all of his PTO as quickly as possible so he can get paid to have fun, and whenever he needs a day off for something that’s an adult responsibility, he just takes the hit. He doesn’t want to “waste his time” on something that’s not fun apparently. He’s also on his final warning and my boss already had to lie to save his job once, but I guess it makes sense to him.

    Our conscious tries to filter this stuff into a hardening of the heart, but it’s not that. It’s just your wisdom growing. Understanding how employees are. It’s just not what you thought. Employees cannot for the life of them understand the business side of your business. It just feels like a never ending money bag for them that you can either give to them or not.

    I don't really blame people who panic. Lack of information can be a big hurdle. I've been making more than $21k passively by just investing through an advisor, and I don't have to do much work. Inflation or no inflation, my finances remain secure. So I really don't blame people who panic.

    Stop being a pushover. She planned this and knew. Make those days unpaid and give her a verbal warning that taking extra days off and not being available when you're expected to work is not okay and will not be tolerated moving forward And since I'm sure other employees are taking advantage of you, I would draft a new PTO policy and address the team. I don't think you can afford to be giving extra PTO any longer. You are too small. Any emergency situations FMLA will be required. And aside from that no more extra PTO for anybody. PTO will be strictly enforced and employees need to plan accordingly. You're not being mean by doing this. Treating employees fairly across the board is the right thing to do.
