Dope review. In short guys what you're paying for in the 915 is the tech. This is by far one of the most technologically advanced piston engine out there if not THE most technologically advanced. Side note: only Trent would apologize for a cell phone video. And the rest of us are like 😳

I dont think you heard of Shelby American cause 800hp in 1966 car is out of this world and no it was not a old topfuel drag car and was only somewhat beaten in an American v8 by the dodge demon with 808 hp in 2018 btw way the Shelby was made in 1966

Loving the tech talk again! It’s been awhile since you had a video like this. They’re my favorites, learning specifics about your plane and flying.
Hey, if you can’t afford it you can’t afford it. Don’t knock the engine over price. You get what you pay for. If you want less, there are plenty of options out there. Thanks for posting, Trent. Keep it coming.
Could you do a video talking specifics about your home strip. Like what hoops you jumped through to doit legally, size of lot to have to have a home strip, issues with neighbors and that sort of thing? I'm hoping to do something similar in Colorado in the near future.

It's his property, and since he's outside any city limits he shouldn't have any real legal stuff. People could complain, but I doubt he had to do much legally speaking. At this point, I believe his strip is still uncharted. Merrick Turner's (am I spelling that right) strip isn't charted either, although its just south of Totem Pole (NW of Sierraville Dearwater). There is another strip in that same valley that isn't charted either. Trent's strip is just about three miles north of H-Bar-H, which is another (charted) private strip nearby. In actuality, the majority of private airstrips aren't charted or registered in any way. My uncle's strip near Ukiah isn't charted, and hasn't been for decades, and it gets used quite a bit, and his is only one of many uncharted and unregistered strips in that area. Most of the reason people don't go through all of that is the hassle and the liability of doing it. Local governments can ask for some pretty ridiculous stuff for adding what is basically nothing more than a road to nowhere. For instance, an aunt of mine wanted to build a barn on her ranch near Bonsall CA, and after years of multiple environmental and cultural impact studies, the county finally told her that she could build it if she bought land in the area of equivalent acreage to her ranch and donated it (along with paying for the upkeep) to the county as a wildlife preserve. After spending more than a million dollars and getting the complete runaround, they wanted her to spend millions more just to get permission to build her barn. Most areas aren't that bad, but they can all be pretty unreasonable to varying degrees, especially when it comes to aviation. Also, the FAA expects you to keep up your registered strip such that it can be used for emergencies and as an aid to navigation, and if someone has to land on your strip in an "emergency," they might sue you if your runway isn't "safe." A lot of charted private strips will put Xs on the ends of their runways to mitigate these issues - its still a navaid and they may continue using it, but if you land and try to sue, they can always claim that the runway wasn't safe, and was marked as such. Of the dirt strips I've landed at, half of them weren't charted, in spite of having been used for many many years.
Yes new Trent video, best day of 2020 so far!
Thanks for the update Trent! I love watching the near vertical takeoffs you are able to do!
Thanks for sharing your experience with this engine Trent!
Glad you are back... Strange only thinking yesterday that I haven't seen one of your vids for a while... And there you are 👍
Missed you man. Glad you’re feeling better and back on camera. Hope you have better luck going forward. 👍🏻
Thanks for the update. I'm glad to hear you still love the 915.
Good to see you back up in the air and out with a new video!
I think Rotax is the future of aviation. Between the FADEC and the built-in alternators, and running on mogas. I look forward to seeing an ATC’d Rotax big enough to replace an IO540 or 520. Great to see you back bro.

Rotax worked on a wide angle v6 (120 degree) back in the late 90's. It was rated at 220 hp normal and 330 hp turbo. I believe it was even installed in a few airframes.
Thanks Trent. Love your channel. Been missing new vids.
There’s something to be said about consistency in performance as well. It’s easier to be safe if you have a sense of what your plane can handle, and it’s easier to have a sense of what your plane can handle if the difference in performance is minimal at different densities and temps
bro...you are living the dream ! i am really glad you share it with us. love your video
Glade to see your back! Have liked your video opening more than others and seems like it has been ages . Since your move to the 915 S it has dated the older videos cause the design of the 912 front end and the 915 is very noticeable to me that is. Nothing against the carbon cubs but I really like your plane. It is awesome! So hope U are able to get back to producing more videos more offten!!
Thank for the update! Keep em coming :)

Absolutely love your plane and especially the Rotax 915. I’m a huge fan and have been for years with Rotax motors. I’ve been looking at the Kitfox and it gets my heart going right up to the issue of cost...then it dies. Blown away with the cost of the 915. I paid way less for a brand new Challenger loaded. Built a Lancair 235 years ago so I’m familiar with what it takes to get flying status. I estimate north of $100k...unbelievable! At least I can live the dream a bit thru your vids. Keep up the great work and fly safe!

Sounds SOOO Good at 4:22 😍 You didn't ramble on too much about the Technology for me Trent, I'm a certified Dataholic 👍 I became a fan of the technology 20 years ago working on motorcycles. Not long after that we were Tuning them via re-flashing the stock ECU. Now it's to the point where I tune stand alone ECUs (Holley, Maxx, FuelTech, ect) via emailed Data Logs without even touching most of the bikes 😲 (still amazes me). Some ECUs data log over 200 channels/functions so anything we need or want can be logged (like turbo impeller rpm, exhaust pressure, whatever). I 💖 Technology...

Stellar video as always!!!
I know it's a little late, but SBs are easy, ADs are easy, Rotax is a well known, well established brand. As an A&P if I could afford it, I wouldn't hesitate, It's nice to know when you can prevent a failure, and that is the advantage with parts made specifically for aircraft, you will know if a failure is likely to happen.
Nice to know Trent as mine goes in around April!! Looking forward to peace of mind at higher altitude short strips.

Now we just need an update from Steve Henry on the EPeX engine.

+1 Those motors make incredible power for the weight, probably due in part to lack of redundancy. Still compelling when you consider they are a fraction of the price of a Rotax 91x.
@PistonAvatarGuy
4 жыл бұрын
@@originaldylanbaxter Power to weight ratio is all about revs, because more combustion events in a given time period means more power, without increasing the size or weight of the engine. The EPeX is a seriously impressive engine, I just wonder how well it holds up to being run up around 9,000 rpm for significant periods of time.
@ctsteve1967

@@PistonAvatarGuy it is make to run at that RPM
@PistonAvatarGuy
4 жыл бұрын
@@ctsteve1967 Sure, but engines that are designed to operate in ground vehicles are designed to operate at their maximum power output for very brief periods of time, while aircraft engines are designed to spend much longer periods of time at high power settings. Obviously the Apex engines are hugely overbuilt, and I think that Edge Performance probably does a very good job of increasing their strength and durability, but I'm still curious about overall longevity. Reliability certainly doesn't seem like it will ever be an issue, as long as the condition of the engine is monitored to avoid running past the point when it needs an overhaul.

It’s funny how when Glock came out with plastic pistols pretty much the entire old school shooter crowd in the US was against them ... except ... they were half the weight , very accurate and stupid reliable ...and eventually changed the world of shooting .... And yet competitions are almost universally won by derivatives of the 1911, double-stack 9mm versions colloquially known as 2011s. Weight, especially in the frame, helps with the recoil impulse. The polygonal rifling is also not without issues. Glocks claim to fame is they're affordable, reliable, and accurate enough. So perhaps not the best analogy. That said, the Rotax engines are nothing like Glock. They are, in fact, the most advanced piston engines for general aviation. That said, if I ever build a KitFox I want to try to slap a ULPower engine up front.
Great information, thx!
