I was told by an “expert” on Reddit that out cat couldn’t possibly a Maine Coon cat because he didn’t cost $2000. However, I live in Maine he chirps and chatters. He is obsessed with water and waits for us when we shower so he can lay on either the wet bath mat or in the shower. We also have to keep the toilet seat closed as he sits on the seat dipping his paws in. He is a chonk and it’s pretty much all muscle 25 lbs of it. He chirps chortles and loves to talk and has the loudest oddest purr I have ever heard. He loves going out with our dogs to play in the snow and chase each other back and forth. All this in addition to the polydactyl fuzzy feet, the ridiculously long the floofy tail and the gorgeous ear tufts. While he doesn’t have the paper work that “proves” his lineage he carries enough of the traits to be at least mostly Maine coon. he is a riot and keeps us laughing and regardless of breed he is one cool dude. His name is moose aka Moocifer and aka Mr Murder Mittens. If I could post a pic most people would say he is certainly a maine coon

Hi Kim, The trouble with Reddit is everyone thinks they're an expert. I know of a couple of Maine Coon bloggers who think they know it all because they own one Maine Coon each. We've owned 7 over the last 25 years and would still never be so arrogant as to think we're experts. If you think your cat's a Maine Coon I think that's absolutely fine :-) I love his nicknames. You can email me a photo of him if you like - see the address on our about page. Best wishes, Jane.

Thank you for this video! I rescued a 5 week old feral kitten hiding in the overgrown ivy across the street. I found her because she was meowing. She was either dumped, or the last one mom was moving. She’s now 8 months, a gorgeous diffused calico color, and I’m pretty sure at least part Maine Coone. She has all the physical traits, and she is VERY VOCAL. She has the longest meow of any cat I’ve heard. I timed it once to 6 seconds. And her meows always end with a final expulsion of air. It seemed more like she was singing so I named her Aria. She is very gentle, very sweet, and very goofy.

I had a ginger MC that passed suddenly in January 2021, and I cried my eyes out over him. When I rescued him from the shelter his tail was such a beautiful flume of fur that we nicknamed him squirrel. I had never heard of a MC until we realized he was one. He weighed 25 lbs. when he was full grown. Here in the US they just label them as domestic long-haired cats as opposed to giving them a specific breed since they are rescues. As luck would have it, in July of 2021 we came across a mama cat with 5 kittens where I work and as a member of the Humane Society, I rescued all of them. Found homes for 2 kittens and the mom, kept one for myself and the other 3 were fostered until they were found forever homes. They all have such great personalities that finding homes for them was no problem at all. The one I kept is so very loveable and sleeps in my chair with me anytime I have time to sit with him. He has a beautiful silky coat with a ginger base and black stripes. He is my beautiful new baby...I love him so much!

The cat that lived with us when I was a teenager was a Maincoon mix he was beautiful and very calm in nature. He looked like a living (very fluffy) version of Garfield. He was a tiny kitten with HUGE ears and feet. His chest ruff, chin, and feet were snow white and he was bright red - this faded as he got older. We called him Tiger Taylor. He was a HUGE cat and had an enormous appetite. We needed to use a medium dog crate to transport him to the vet. As a kitten, Tiger was stunning. He was almost doll-like in appearance and had crystal blue eyes. Because of his looks and serene personality, he won a lot of amateur cat shows and he loved to go to them... he loved the attention and would seek it out from everyone he met. One few regrets I have in life is not having more photos of him... I had a few but lost them in a flood. He was a smart cat and loved to do things that I have never seen in any other cat that I have lived with... he would go swimming when it got hot and ate anything we were - including fruit and pickled vegetables. I miss him. A lot. One of my current cats I live with today has a bit of Maincoon mix in his ancestry as well but he is very different to any other cat I have lived with... he (Albert Bucatti Taylor) is a mackerel and although almost twice the size of his older domestic brother (Bugatti Verdun Taylor)... for a start, he is a thief and has stolen my keys and other unusual items... like a few 15ml glass bottles.

They never get into fights, not once and yet they can back a nasty vicious cat into a corner, never laying a paw on them, never growling just using their body language to put manners on said nasty cat. I have a mixed breed kitten. His mother had medium long hair. I did not get to see his father, but was reportedly a short hair gray cat. The kitten was fairly fluffy when we got him, but at about 6 months now, his fur looks to be settling down to be short, but a little bit longer around his flanks and belly. He does have pretty good ear tufts, though, and somewhat of Maine Coon looking bone structure in his face. He also shows signs of growing up to be fairly large eventually. He doesn't talk much at all. I would guess that his parentage includes Maine Coon and Russian Blue, probably with a conglomeration of other things. I'm still hoping that his fur gets a little bit longer eventually...I knew someone once who had a Siberian whose fur was pretty short until it got to be about two years old, when it got significantly longer, with a very majestic ruff. Do Maine Coons ever do this?

Love your video. I just love Maine coons so much. I’d never even heard of this breed until quite by accident brought a tiny little kitten home. The lady was selling kittens for 50$ so my grandsons talked me into going and getting one. I had always gone to spca to get my “roommates” before that but this kitten just won us over immediately. She just looked like any other short hair kitten. She fit into my palm. So tiny. Well she just brought life and love with her. And about six months into her growing she began to grow strange paw fur, well then she started getting a lions mane. He feet were her biggest feature at this point. Well she kept growing and growing and getting fur that just floated everywhere. I had sticky rollers in every corner of the house. I stopped wearing black altogether. Lacies hair just followed me everywhere. Hilarious personality. She had this fainting goat routine down pat. When our other cat Lillie came within a foot of her she just acted as though she’d fainted dead away. She just toppled tight over like she was frozen and her legs stiffened straight out. It was so funny. Well at age three we felt like she’d finally stopped growing. She was now 24 lbs. and brushing her was done at least daily. I learned the hard way what a matte of fur can become when gone undetected for a week. Oh my goodness. It was like surgery trying to remove them. And just a word of wisdom. Big big kitty does not mean slow kitty. She could go from docile to her teeth around my hand ready to teach me how she felt about that last knot I hit...in half a heartbeat. She beat the tar out of a dogs nose that insisted on cornering her. I warned the dog owner w ho laughed..so I ran to get between them but in just seconds the dog went from attacking to running away with wounded nose and pride. My Lacie died last year. I’ve never really gotten over the loss of her. She loved. Like no other cat or dog or friend I’d ever had. She was the absolute best companion. She is missed terribly. If you have a Maine coon you know what I mean. If anytime I were to get another kitty I would first and foremost find someone who knows where that little old lady went. Hmmmm..though now I’m nearing being a little old lady I guess. Lol. If you have a Maine Coon you are so lucky to have such a wonderful friend.

We had a white Maine Coon, Charlie, and a red tabby Maine Coon, Harry, for 15 years. Both hated the brush and cost us a fortune in sedated grooms at the vets. Both were gentle unless you tickled their inviting bellies. We spent a small fortune on sticky rollers to remove cat hair from our clothes before leaving the house. My grandsons would start laughing and I knew. There goes another roll. And it wasn’t like you could salvage any of the roll either. It looked as if it went thru a shredder. Hilarious. Well, coming to this one a bit late, but there is a cat that has been coming to my house on and off for a few years, more recently, almost daily since my dog has been gone a while now. This boy doesn't have ear tufts, but he is about 19 inches from head to the beginning of the tail. He can stand up with his paws almost on the stove, but he's not a heavyweight, so maybe he's a mix. He just walks in and takes over, tries to get in the fridge, very vocal, but super friendly as well.

Our rescued two years old kitten is probably mixed Maine Coon. He has wisps of hair sweeping out from inside his ears. He does not have enough hair on the tips of his ears to have the “Linx”- look. He has very long tufts of hair on his paws. His tail is as long as his entire body. The hair on his tail is long. And his entire tail “flows” and “drapes”. He is very vocal. His inner clock matches mine: “Time to get up”, he speaks as he gently strokes and pats my face. “Time to feed the Baby Kitty”, “time to pet me”, “I want attention, now!” “Time to rest/nap”, “Time to play with me”, “Daddy’s home!!!!”, “Time to eat a snack, take your medicine, make yourself ready for bed, put kibble in my bowl, play with me, turnout the light and go to bed”. I promise he says it all! His Veterinarian says we must watch he does not become overweight, he is a big boy! Right now he is 10 lbs. His eight could easily soar to 25-30 lbs. She says she does not want him to weigh over 10 lbs. His “M” is very faint, but distinct in that it can be clearly seen when the sun strikes it at a certain angle. If he is not Maine Coon, he might be mix-Norwegian Forest. He is our baby, and we love him no matter what breed he is.

@@MaineCoonDaily he is beginning to behave a little more like a mature male (altered) feline. He was a foundling. We are friends with the family who found him, they had him two weeks. During which time their senior female cat just would not accept him. Our Senior Female passed away of cancer. (It is estimated he was probably born at the time of her death.) He was approximately 4 weeks old when we agreed to give him a new home. When he was about four months of age, Family Circumstances called me away for 10-months. He was alone most of the time while my husband worked during the day. We have been reunited now. But those crucial months of being without supervision allowed him to develop naughty behavior and deep insecurities. He just recently has allowed my husband and I to hold him in our lap, like he did when he was a baby. He is very intuitive. He knows when I am not well. He “tells” me it’s time to take my bedtime medicine, then play with him, then put dry food in his bowl for snacking throughout the night, and turn out the light and settle down for sleep. He is very vocal when I return to our room, from being out to do chores. (I am caring for an aging parent, whose dogs are not cat friendly. But then, my cat is not dog friendly either.) He is our kitten and very dependent on my husband and me. I am definitely his “momma”. He would not survive outdoors. I have had to teach him to play nicely. He nips me for attention. I have had to teach him which nipping is acceptable and which is not. He “gently pats or strokes my face if I am napping, and he wants something. He knows the difference of “let’s go visit your brothers: Ferret & Rabbit” vs “I will be right back. We are blessed to have him.

She has all the characteristics but her fur is not as thick on all parts of her body, but the body shape, head shape, eyes, paws, ear fur, long fluffy tail that wraps around her body. Super fast - like lightening and very intelligent and mischievous. She’s just under a year now so I’m curious how big she will get over the next couple of years. We have an 8-month-old who weighs 16 lbs and a 2-year-old who weighs just 13 lbs. Maine Coons can keep growing until they are 3 or 4 but our 2 year-olds haven't got any bigger since they were 18 months, except their coats have got fluffier! She was tuxedo-colored, didn't have the eartip hair and though long-haired wasn't as shaggy as some Maine Coons I've seen. Thing is, though, this was one big kitty! Not just fluffy, but heavy and with big paws on her. She was a shoulder kitty, but while head and forepaws were neatly tucked up there, it took both of my arms to support the remainder of the cat! And at six -feet, two-seventy, I am no small lad myself. I came to call her Big'un because of her size. She also had THE sweetest disposition I'd ever seen in a cat. Harry was so beautiful. I'll bet he was a sweet boy too. The part with a couple of your cats yawning near the end of the video was cute. They look so cute when they yawn. Rory does it to show off (I used to tell him "You're being deliberately cute on purpose" - intentional redundancy) after he noticed my reaction one day. And once he accidentally did a "yawn squeak" like dogs do, you know what I mean. It was precious and of course I laughed and exclaimed loudly how cute it was. Theo saw that and now he does it just to be cute, when he wants food or my attention or something. He's so smart, that guy. Smartest cat I've ever known. He probably has some Maine Coon in him but those genes didn't dominate his appearance like they did with Rory, obviously. His personality, though, is very "Maine Coonish".

I think my boy was half Maine coon. He was a very big boy, very fluffy, had an "M" shape on his head (thought that's not the most accurate way to tell), acted like a dog (he was a gentle giant and a very affectionate), and loved water. He also had a lot of distinct noises, mostly sweet, gentle meows, and if he saw one of my family members outside he had a very odd chirp to describe how he was confused of how we were outside. He was an inside cat. Poor baby passed away last year in November, only 11 years old, due to organ failure. I miss him more than anything! And I'd give anything to have him back, or forget those last miserable 2 weeks he had on this earth. It was like living a nightmare, he was so sick and miserable. We should've put him down the day after he started acting ill. Now I can't stop remembering him in those horrible final moments, before he was put down, rather than the amazing 11 years I shared with him. I wish I could remember those times instead, but they seem so far away now.

It sounds like he was a wonderful boy. It will get easier eventually to come to terms with your loss. Two years ago, we lost our white Maine Coon Charlie to liver failure. He became ill overnight, I took him to the vet and they scanned his liver to find it in the final stages of failure at age 14. We were devastated, like you. Don't beat yourself up about his last 2 weeks as you cannot change those. You clearly looked after and loved him really well for 11 years and should allow yourself to look back on those times. Be kind to yourself, push those last days out of your mind, and let the happy memories rule. Take care. Jane x

Big floofy tail, especially floofy belly, loves water, tufts between his toes (of which he has a lot, since he has extras), ear tufts, very calm and gentle, his meows are very quiet especially with his size but he's not shy, chirps and trills, loves to be around us all the time, absolutely loves a head rub or a belly rub, strong and robust frame. I KNEW our rescue of 13 years now has some Maine Coon in him! He certainly isn't purebred (missing ear tufts and has shorter inner-ear hairs), but all the other signs are there, the green eyes, long bushy tail and fluffy paws, and, he **always** greets us with some kind of noise when he sees us, is indifferent to a warm bath (but not a thunderstorm, he learned that lesson himself haha) not to mention he eats a ton and is still in excellent shape with the exercise we give him, all muscle and floof, barely a hint of a primordial pouch. In short, thanks a bunch lol!

I think I may have a mix. He only chirps and trills. Occasionally, makes 'silent' meows. He's 18lb; but, long and lean, big boned, as they say. He's black/white Tuxedo coated with very long hair and tail. He had tufts of hair on and out his ears as a kitten; but he grew out of them (?). His tufted feet look like tree trunks, very sturdy and wide. The green eyes are large and almond shaped; but his head is not as you describe. It is very broad and lemon shaped. The ears seem to grow from the side of his big lemon head, not straight from the crown. The mouth is larger and wider than a normal house cat; but, not as pronounce as the typical Maine Coon. His name is Roary.

Fella, my MC mix can leap from the driveway up to the roof of the porch. He is extraordinarily strong, acts like a dog, speaks and purrs very quietly. He often overpowers the two Orange tabbies. He’s all love for the most part. He had been returned to a shelter TWICE because the adopters did not understand litter boxes and disoriented kitten. I am lucky. But I want to make sure he is getting optimal nutrition. Purina One Complete and tuna - would love to hear suggestions. I had them on really expensive dry food, but had to cut back as I got laid off.

  • @MaineCoonDaily

I find the less fillers in the food the less smelly the litter tray. We go for high protein, low grain. The kittens were on raw at the breeder's so we continued it. It has rabbit, ox heart and ground bone so has all the essential nutrients cats need. None of our four will eat tuna - they sometimes eat cod. Rosie is so fussy it's hard to keep her weight up. Fella sounds like he's doing well on his diet with leaps like that. Purina is complete, Tuna is high protein - is it the one in water (not brine or oil)?

If you're adopting a longhaired cat from a shelter or a friend, it's extremely unlikely that it's a purebred Maine Coon. Who would give up a cat for free that they could sell for $1500-3000? Still, you can get some that have most of the Maine Coon look. Especially in New England where the breed originated. My grandmother's barn cats in Massachusetts often had litters with polydactyl fluffy longhairs that looked very much like purebred Coons but obviously couldn't be. None got to be 20 lbs but still were pretty big at around 14-15 lbs.

  • @MaineCoonDaily

Hi detomaso, You're right. Purebreds with paperwork are unlikely to come cheap or free. Occasionally, older cats are given to shelters because of the death of an owner or a change in their circumstances. There are so many beautiful crossbreed cats with Maine Coon features and loving personalities. We've never had a Maine Coon over 15 lbs. Our heaviest is a little lady called Mona who is just over 14 lbs.

We took a dna test. our cat turned out to be 25% maine coon, meaning his grandparent was the real deal and one of his parents was a half breed. he is stoic, pursy lips, loves his mother, one big baby, but he is abnormally stronger than all cats.

I have two that are either full or mostly Maine Coons and one that has some Maine Coon, from his mother, he has the long ear hairs and the toe floof for sure. And one of his brothers has the longer hair, just not overly long, and it's not so silky as the older ones.

Hi Java, We have a 20-month-old girl, Rosie and she's got the shortest hair I've ever seen on a Maine Coon so some are not so fluffy. Their floofy toes are such a cute feature. Some people trim it which is such a shame.

I think mine has some wegie or coon mix, but might not be full. Someone suggested part ragdoll as well, but really hard to tell. She has most of the signs, but is a medium haired and does not have the floofy lions mane. She acts doglike, follows me around and is quite independent but sweet.

Hi Abijah, One of our girls doesn't have a lion's mane - and they don't all get as fluffy. She's definitely dog-like and quite independent - like yours. Ragdoll and Maine Coon crosses are beautiful and Wegies are similar to Maine Coons so anything is possible.

Me, too! I’ll even take a mix. I had a beauty but she passed April 4th of this year. I miss her so, so much. I look at sites like this and then realize I’m looking for her, one like her. And there isn’t another cat like her. When I’m ready I’m sure the right cat will find me, though. : )

@@MaineCoonDaily She was a mix Mainecoon and maybe tabby? She was what I think would be called a dilute calico. She was mostly grey, then ginger and white but had a tabby face. All four paws had white on them. One front leg ginger, the other grey! She was longhaired with tufts of fur between her toes. Her eyes were large and green. She had a “ruff” around her neck that was startlingly white, SOOO white!! She slept and sometimes buried her nose in her riff, mostly in the winter but sometimes in the fall and spring, as well! She didn’t get along with other cats or dogs but would begrudgingly tolerate another cat if the introduction was proper and long enough. And she talked and chirped quite a bit; she always, always had the last word in any conversation!!! She loved being petted and brushed and her fur was the softest that I’ve ever felt. Also she had a big, beautiful floofy tail! It was beautiful! She was a real character and was my mom’s cat until my mom passed in 2014. I was so very lucky to have had her for the 6 years I did. Oh, gosh, how I miss her, so very terribly! She passed on April 4th of this year, just three days after your Harry did. I’m really sorry for your loss of him. Any pet lost is such a terrible and deep heartache but Mainecoons are such special cats I think it’s maybe a bit harder. Thank you for asking after Dufus (my mom’s choice of a name!). I still love and adore her!

I had a cat that the vet said was a main coon. She had every, but one and even ones not listed, She loved the water and loved to chirp like Aline stated. The one she didn't have is she was only about 10 lbs. She was an outdoor cat and I've seen cats who don't get easy food is often smaller. Maybe she wasn't a purebred. She definately looked like a MC.

This made me think of my current kitty Dank. He's a hefty boy and is quite large. He is the sweetest thing, but he does have diabetes. I just really feel bad because right now he's wasting away, and I don't know how to get him to gain any weight. Poor thing is only 12 pounds, but he sounds like a mack truck when he's purring. I inherited him from a former friend of mine who was backpacking around the States and couldn't keep him anymore, and I jumped at the chance to add another furry child to my life.

Hi Steven, That's so sad. We lost Harry to cancer in April and he was hardly eating. The vet called him a skinny boy as he went down to 10 lbs - we had tried everything to get him to eat. I know there are some high-calorie diets you could try - your vet has probably told you about them. I hope you manage to sort him out. Best wishes, Jane.

If she’s quite young, she might not have finished growing. We have an article that might help you decide PetsKB.com/is-my-cat-a-Maine-coon/ Best wishes, Jane.

Her tail isn't overly too long but it is bushy like one of the Siberian type cats. She also has the neck ruff, long fur. I showed someone a picture & their cat is black but is a similar build to mine & this person thinks my cat is part Norwegian forest cat.
