Appreciated the info. What is it like as a retirement destination? Much in the way of property for seniors? What kind of health care access does it have? And does it have a cycle track? Winter road and sidewalk conditions are my concerns as a year round hiker.

  • @realestateagentyxe

Winter roads depend on the snow fall each year. The city does well with clearing main routes quickly. Side roads can get a little backed up with snow. For senior residence, there are various choices for condos, townhouses or gated communities. There are rules around placing age restrictions on residences but there are certainly some complexes that cater to more of a senior community. As for year round hiking, you would need to be willing to bundle up. Some residents choose to add spikes to shoes if it's overly icy or cross country skiing and snow shoeing are popular options for people who may enjoy hiking in warmer weather

Do not move to Saskatoon if you’re a single male, especially if you’re over 30. People there are extremely clannish, and I know from experience that you’ll never meet anybody. Women there are extremely bigoted towards older males, and I know dozens of people, mostly men, who moved away because of the toxic attitude. I’m not exaggerating or joking. For example, I was walking to the library on McKercher one time and a woman walking with her little boy went “tch” when she saw me and crossed the street to avoid me. Lots of older guys I know have had this experience. I lived in Saskatoon for 20 years, and have nothing good to say about the place. I’m in the arts, and ran into endless deadbeats who failed to show up, didn’t support their own organisations, showed little enthusiasm, and who wasted a lot of other people’s time and effort. Expect that kind of garbage if you move to Saskatoon. Saskatoon loves to pat itself on the back- a very Canucklehead thing to do- and is more about hypocrisy than anything else. The thing you’ll experience most is isolation and exclusion. I’ve lived in many cities across Canucklehead land. Saskatoon is at the bottom of the list of the places I’d choose to live.

I think it's important to show the pros and cons of a place if people are looking at moving here. If I claimed it was perfect, no one would believe it. Good to show both sides. That said, the negatives a pretty mild and Saskatoon has many more positives than negatives

I agree, her description certainly wasn't all roses. But, having said that, I appreciated her lack of boosterism in describing the city. I lived there for over 70 years, and now that I live in another part of the world ... I miss Saskatoon a lot. If you only pay attention to the negatives, you will undoubtedly come to a negative perception conclusion. I know people who have moved to other cities because of all the activities that they afford. But in fact , they rarely participate in any of those events. As an example, how many people go to a hockey game in any of the larger cities? In the 20,000 range... right? The other 99.6% of the population (Toronto example) either watch on TV, can't afford to go anyway ... or simply don't care. The vast majority of people live quiet, simple lives. Saskatonians rarely have to deal with large crowds and snarled freeways. The northern lake country with its' many recreational opportunities is only a few hours away. Is Saskatoon perfect? How about Edmonton, Calgary, Regina, Winnipeg? All cities deal with the same urban issues. Saskatoon is a beautiful mid-size city with friendly people. I'm hoping to get back there soon for a visit.

@@Keekonuts I'm so sorry to hear that you've lost your home, must be an awful feeling. I am certainly no expert when it comes to real estate, but I do know that housing is much more affordable in Saskatoon compared to the Lower Mainland of BC. Only you can determine what you can afford though, so why not check out the listings online. I could give you advice on location to some extent, but like everyone else, I have my own prejudices when it comes to areas of the city. I don't know Angela, but she seems to be a straight shooter, and would probably give good advice based on her knowledge of the city. Whatever you want to call it ... Toon Town, Paris of the Prairies ... or Saskabush ... it's still a very good place to live. Good Luck.
