IS MIKEL ARTETA A BETTER MANAGER THAN ANTONIO CONTE?

Спорт

On the latest episode of 888sport’s The Playlist, ‪@RoryJenningsFootball‬, ‪@AdeOladipo1‬ and Abbi Summers are joined by special guest Robbie Lyle from ‪@AFTVmedia‬ and ‪@drsportsmedia‬ to rank the Top 5 managers in the Premier League.
01:10 Panel reveal their Top 5s
02:09 Would Pep swap his PL medals for one Champions League?
03:56 Are Conte's PL achievements comparable to Klopp's?
04:44 Is Conte's style of football an issue?
05:35 Have Man Utd made the right appointment in Erik ten Hag?
07:59 Is Graham Potter pound-for-pound the best PL manager?
10:30 What is the expectation for Arteta this season?
13:00 Who will finish higher out of Spurs and Arsenal?
Ahead of the North London derby and the Manchester United derby, the panel debate how much pressure Mikel Arteta is under to finish in the top four after Arsenal ‘bottled it’ last season and whether Antonio Conte's style of football is acceptable for Spurs fans.
They also debate whether Man Utd have finally made the right appointment in Erik Ten Hag and argue over whether Pep Guardiola would swap all his Premier League titles for one Champions League title with Man City.
Also on the agenda is whether new Chelsea boss Graham Potter is pound-for-pound the best manager in the Premier League and how much more success Jurgen Klopp would have enjoyed had he spent the same amount of money as Pep.
The Playlist is 888sport’s weekly KZread series, where Rory Jennings, Ade Oladipo and Abbi Summers, plus another influencer/celebrity guest, settle a big debate in football by making a definitive Top 5 list.

@@16ShimiC16 it’s not about delusion tbf, it’s being a bit giddy but let me explain, the goal from POV of the board wasn’t to get top 4 (Arteta’s contract wouldn’t have been extended otherwise), and yes while the outlay was massive, you need to understand it wasn’t just a simple rebuild, it was an overhaul- overhauls take time. And moreover, this overhaul didn’t involve short term fixes like getting in Sokratis and Lichstenier, it meant we were getting young players who are yet to reach their prime and could be moulded to play to the managers desire. The keyword here is young. When you manage Arsenal on any manager simulation game, the biggest drawback of the squad is shown as too young and inexperienced- which is why we crumbled under pressure, plus we lost two key players in our first choice LB and our 45m DM. Notwithstanding, the fact that we reached 5th with that squad is something Arteta deserves praises for. None of our players were world class ffs, Martinelli was from a 3rd Divion Brazilian team, Saka and ESR academy graduates, Odegaard a RM reject, Brighton sold White and didn’t even bother to replace him, Ramsdale got relegated twice. Arteta took these players and finished ahead of Utd, Leicester, West Ham, the latter ones were apparently being billed as our replacement in top 6. And let’s not forget the fact that had we not lost to Brentford on the opening day, or Everton in mid season, we would have finished ahead of Conte’s Spurs with Kulu-Kane-Son frontline. Arteta deserves some criticisms but none for the way how the season ended.

@@kiriakoz You’re right, there’s a bit of recency bias as he did excellently with Celtic and fairly well with Swansea. My comment’s not entirely fair - he doesn’t tail off always, but nor does he regularly overperform. With Liverpool he did tail off, and losing key players is something a top manager should have to deal with. Leicester and don’t forget Reading both did tail off. As for where he’s done a good job - Celtic should be winning the SPL every year. With the money they have compared to the other teams it’s a wonder they haven’t dominated more. He overperformed at Swansea credit to him, but keeping a struggling side up is not enough of a reason to be in the top 5 current PL managers. If we think it is then there’s other managers we have to consider. All in all he’s obviously a good manager, but I just don’t think there’s enough to say he’s under-appreciated. Of current PL managers not mentioned for that top 5 list, I’d rather (in no order) have Hassenhüttl, Moyes, Frank, Howe, De Zerbi and even your beloved Gerrard if I were appointing the manager.

Its simple. Arsenal were down in the dumps. So many aging players, underperforming players like Mustafi, Sokratis, Kolasinac, even Ozil to some extent. Don't forget we just lost our longest serving manager, legendary manager. Its not easy, you can see it with Emery, an experienced manager with very good CV, he can't handle that. I think the 8th position has always been coming for Arsenal, like when United finished 7th under Moyes, Arsenal have worse squad, lack of investment for years, lack of planning, remember the last 2 seasons under Wenger we didn't qualify for UCL. Its always a very hard job for any manager, of course he still has to deliver us top 4 and possibly a trophy this season, but he will always be remembered for the way he rebuilt the squad, we have one of the youngest squad in Europe, probably the best young squad so far.

    1. I love how Rory is taken to school more and more by and about Arteta. 2. I don't completely agree with Roby, Conte did a good job since January when he found a Spurs team in disarray and managed to get them top 4 against their rivals, so it's not only based on what he did outside Tottenham, like 5-10% is Spurs activity too. 3. If Conte would've been beaten by Arteta in the contest for top 4, I think Conte's 3rd position would be in jeopardy, so it's not only based on what he did outside The PL, is it? It would've been more of a contest then between the 2 then. 4. Arteta 3 years ago did find an Arsenal much below Spurs, that FA Cup has put a blinder over everyone's eyes, and instead of starting the reconstruction that summer, he postponed it with a year because he won that trophy and fed into the likes of Rory's mouths that he's not good enough when in fact the rotting stopped at 8th when he came to Arsenal, because the team was in a slippery slope. Who knows how much we'd have fallen without him. 5. The Auba business was incredibly hard, everyone loved Auba (except for me - that's why I like Arteta because we both haven't seen a WC player there, I liked even Giroud better) so he must find the reason to kick arguably the star of the team out, because he doesn't defend, because he does that idiotic jogging on the field instead of running to get the ball, etc. It could've easily blown in his face, but he managed it well with Martinelli firing. Difficult moment passed up well. 6. North London derby this weekend he owned Conte. 7. He'll finish easy above Spurs this season as I said at the beginning of the season, because our titans Jesus and Saliba upped the team 50% at least in peach performance, also with Zinchenko in what means a winning mentality while Spurs have the same 1st eleven and same game as last season. The managers don't play on the pitch, the players do, it's just not enough, Arsenal's players are that much better as everyone sees in these past 8 games. Hehehe. (We play with reserves, U23s in EL Groups no problems as all the idiots drool / drivel "Thursday, Thursday!", problems are for those who have CL and must play the 1st team, and in January we'll buy that illusive CDM for Partey, then we're all set. ;) )

Sorry but surely Moyes should be in there ahead of Arteta. Granted, he is managing a club with more prestige, but what he has done in his PL career outweighs Arteta, ESPECIALLY as he has been managing in the PL for 5 MINs!! And, if Potter is in for a shout, Moyes has to be considered. Unless there is something obvious that I’m missing and I’m just being daft 😂

Feels like Ade made the wrong arguments for Klopp. Trophy hall isn’t where Klopp is better than Pep. The debate for me is that Klopp could go to pretty much any club and win things, in time. Guardiola seems to need certain types of players. Not saying Klopp’s better, but if I were a team without a phenomenal academy and the ability to bring in lots of players, I’s want Klopp not Pep.

Klopp doesn't need certain types of players??? So, why bring Van Dijk, Alisson, Tiago, Fabinho?? They are all certain type of players with definitive qualities

Klopp maybe a better coach than Pep (debatable) but he's not anywhere near him as an actual manager because he's not good at managing upwards.
