When I applied for McMaster last year for engineering in hopes of doing mechatronics, I also applied to other universities for mechatronics (Waterloo, Queens), and got rejected from all. I ended up doing Computer Systems Engineering at Carleton University, which is like the electronics part of mechatronics. There is a major focus on designing systems from the looks of things (I'm only a first year) and it seems like a good compromise for anyone interested in mechatronics. It's basically a hybrid of software eng, computer eng, and mechatronics where the focus is design. It also has three words that I imagine employers have heard of so that's a pro. The major con is that it's a program at Carleton University. I know the school doesn't really matter in terms of education, but co-op in Ottawa is not nearly as good as being in or around the GTA (not that you can't apply elsewhere, but Carleton isn't as renowned as McMaster, UofT or Waterloo). Co-op is also a stream you can opt into, but your first term is after 2nd year. TL;DR: Got rejected from McMaster, ended up doing Computer Systems Engineering at Carleton

honestly, there are tons of CS related jobs with the government near Ottawa. I’ve also noticed many banks etc have lots of jobs in Ottawa. you just have to look out for them. I’ve actually applied to a few Ottawa jobs myself over the past few years. they do exist.

@@harjitsingh-jn1vu They didnt tell me, but they did defer me so clearly they liked my application and/or grades but not enough for engineering. My advice is to not skimp on the applications. Do your best for those, and don't expect a response from the university until May. Also, grades matter more than you think but it's also not everything. Having applied during COVID times, more people applied and even a lot of the smartest people I know (very high averages, are in many clubs, etc) got rejected. Not trying to scare you, just giving you a realistic perspective.

A sign of intelligence is learning things you dont think you'll need to know, because a) who knows what the future will bring? and b) knowing something 'obscure' may open doors you never knew existed.(there are polyglots who learned dying languages for fun and ended up finding work because of them)

In my experience there really isn't anything about quantum engineering in mechatronics. I would recommend taking a nano engineering degree or at least being involved in some type of nano engineering club, computer engineering might get you close to quantum computing related fields.

hypothetically it is possible, but you’d end up in first year again. depends if that’s worth it for you. I personally don’t think I would’ve been happy at Waterloo, so I decided to stay at Mac

Hey Oliver, I applied to Mechatronics on OUAC for McMaster, but I'm a bit confused with my accpetance offer. So it basically says I got into Engineering I, but on the letter it doesn't say anything about Mechatronics. So I'm confused if I got in Mechatronics or not (on OUAC it says I got an offer from McMaster, and the program code is MEC). If you can help clear up my confusion it would be appriecated. Thanks!

McMaster has a general first year. You choose your specialization in 2nd year after you get your first year grades. So you have to have good enough grades in first year to get your top choice program.

Hi Oliver. I am a grade 12 student waiting to hear back from Engineering I. My peers are telling me that I should pick a university that does not have a general first year so that I have a spot in my desired engineering stream secured. They are saying that first year at McMaster will be too competitive for me to get accepted into my desired stream in second year and there is a good chance I will end up with something I do not like. The stream I want to do is either Comp Eng or Tron(like yourself) Should the competitiveness for the streams really steer me away from this school? Can you give me some advice/insight on the dilemma I am facing? Do most people not get the stream they want at McMaster? Is simply hard work not enough for students like me who aren't naturally smart? Sorry for the long email.

Great question. I will say that McMaster Mechatronics has become a lot more competitive in recent years because the general first year has done a good job of focusing the spotlight on it. Computer engineering is a little less competitive, but it is still top half of streams. I do think that as long as you work hard, you will get good enough grades to get into at least one of these streams at McMaster. Most people end up getting one of their top 2 streams, I honestly don't know anyone who didn't. But that being said, if you really really flop, then you might get thrown into whatever stream. However, this isn't such a bad thing, because there is pros to every single kind of engineering stream, and you might end up finding that you really like something. To be honest with you, I have thought many times that I might have preferred a different stream, which I have mentioned in a few videos. But, if you REALLY don't want to be in a certain stream you can usually talk to administrative staff in the faculty and they might find a way to switch you (this is hard to do though). So to answer your question, I wouldn't let this deter you, but I would say it is important to realize that it is a possibility you won't get what you want, and you may end up having to live with it if it comes to that. So having an open mind when going into McMaster is a big benefit.

This is somewhat true, you do need to have a very high GPA to get into mechatronics because there is a lot of demand for it
