I think that because of the pandemic we all went into this mass hysteria where everyone was hyping everyone else up with luxury. We had the time, the resources, and the social media connection. This is just the aftermath. We’re all finally healing via price increases and poor quality.

I just wanted to explain the Chanel advertisement. B. Pitt and P. Cruz repeat some cult scenes of the French New Wave classic film "A man and a woman" directed by Claude Lelouch in 1966. The whole story of the movie takes place in Deauville, a city strong connected with Coco Chanel. In the specific scene taking place in the restaurant, the director Claude Lelouch put the Chanel bag (which in real life belonged to the actress of his movie) between the actress and the actor. This scene is a key moment of the film, a sexy moment. The beginn of an affair? Therefore the question concerning a free room ... No spoiler here! You have to watch the film!!! 😁 The black Chanel, this object of desire, is a symbol of the mounting attraction of the man and the woman to each other. I hope I could help with my explanation.

I live here in Vegas half the year and that’s very true…. There’s a ton of shopping still going on. Vegas is my favorite place to shop so I hold out until I’m here as well but while it’s still busy here, the luxury store employees are sitting around twiddling their thumbs in empty shops almost every time I walk past a boutique . I don’t think luxury shopping is dead but it is out of reach for most people right now and they have more design / price/ quality competition with contemporary brands as well

If every bag I own is a luxury bag then it’s no longer a luxury, it’s simply a nice bag. Luxury has become far more commonplace and with the amount of new collections being churned out, there isn’t time for an ‘It’ bag. The reason you haven’t noticed the price increase at LV is because each new release has the increase rather than doing it across the board. I think most people feel they have what they need for now.

  • @LuxPurselove

    @LuxPurselove

    3 ай бұрын

@AnUrbanGypsy Yes I knew they were doing that with the new collections but it has been awhile since the whole inventory has gone up. I disagree that if every bag I own is luxury then it is no longer luxury. I don't think the amount negates the luxury aspect, to me at least. And yes way too many new releases are constantly pumped out.

I think it has to do with price increases and the economy. Unfortunately since the pandemic prices have gone up but the economy is horrible. People are deciding on buying a bag or putting food on the table. It’s unfortunate but true. Myself, I’ve moved more towards the luxury resellers. I have purchased so many amazing bags from my wishlist for way way under retail. Why purchase brand new when I’m getting like new under retail and saving on tax. I’m not paying 11,700 for the shopping bag and packaging 😂. It’s funny because like you I’ve looked through the LV website and 2 years ago everything was call for availability now everything is place in cart. Ironic to say the least. ❤❤

This was such a great video, Melinda! Very interesting hearing about your Vegas (window) shopping experience. The fact that Dooney uses premium hardware, has quality leathers & workmanship, while offering reasonable prices (in contrast with "luxury" brands) was particularly interesting. Same with Coach. They use brass instead of plated hardware, and it will stay looking beautiful by using a polishing cloth occasionally. I have no idea why people who can afford to spend big bucks on luxury goods are backing away, but the ridiculous price increases are enough to put anyone off. I'm still looking to purchase the Gucci Ophidia like yours, but waited to sell my LV Speedy 20 first. I have a small collection but still have bags that sit unused for months at a time. Perhaps the thrill is just gone. 😢

I think quality and price increases play a part but also the fear of carrying those luxury brands and being a target. With social media people who don’t shop luxury knows those prices so people who has those bags are much more careful of using their bags so they are not targets. I brought my Chanel 22 to NY really didn’t enjoy using it as I was using public transportation and felt I had to be so careful to not show the logo. I’m finding myself more comfortable using other brands without logos or minimal logos during my travels.

On my last several visits to Tiffany & Co, I was the only one in the stores (three different stores, on three different occasions). Louis Vuitton is ruining Tiffany. Most of the sterling silver jewelry has been retired and the prices of all jewelry and have increased significantly. They also tripled the prices of some of the Tiffany flatware pieces. I’m done with Tiffany. So sad….

I started my luxury shopping about two years before the pandemic and bought and sold a lot during the pandemic. I was not buying to resell but it took a lot of trial and error to figure out what worked for my lifestyle. I made some huge profits especially on reselling Chanel and goyard bags on eBay. Things have slowed down quite a bit the last couple of years. I still sell some bags but it takes longer. I think people are just spending on other things…unless you’re a collector, you don’t need to be buying several bags a year. I’ve also grown tired of the reselling process since I list and sell things myself so I’m more discerning when it comes to making a luxury purchase now.

The quality is for on some of these bags now is poor for the amount of money they are charging. You mentioned Doomed and Bourke now they’re a great bag for the price and made very well last for years. I’ll stick to using my older Chanel, Hermes Garden Party and Louis Vuitton bags. If I do get one it will be a Dooney. Someone said on this chat to give it pause in shopping which I agree if we stop purchasing these high-end items, they’ll bring the price down to a normal range. I couldn’t give an opinion on this one. I haven’t been to a luxury boutique since before Covid as I buy about 90% of luxury items preloved. It’s not just luxury resellers having sales and sending out discount codes. In the past year and a half everybody seems to be doing it all the time. I think that with the cost of living crisis people aren’t spending money as often as they used to. Once that’s over and people start spending again I expect the non stop sales will stop as suddenly as they started.

Yes I have seen so many sales that you wouldn't have seen a year or two ago. It will be interesting to see what people do moving forward.

I became beyond disgusted by the price increases and the declining quality. I ended up selling all of my LV pieces except for a vintage multicolor speedy and a pair of sunglasses. I kept my Chanel and Hermes bags, which I purchased before the nonsense. I started buying more Longchamp, and have you ever gotten into Frye leather? UGH, it's beautiful! I have several pairs of Frye shoes, but their leather handbags are freaking spectacular. I don't miss LV, and I will never - and I mean never - buy Chanel from the boutique. The prices are just plain heinous.

When the luxury shopping experience become no better than any other mall retailer shopping experience, it’s really not that exciting anymore. Not to mention, the new designs are same models in different color or leather… not to mention some ugly and unpractical pieces… it’s just not worth the hassle or the money anymore.

I have noticed that as well. For example the LV Loop Hobo came out in leather and only cream and black. The Dior book tote finally came in leather and only beige, black and cream. So boring!

I do think many of the houses are trying to imply exclusivity with the pricing. From a marketing perspective it seems faulty, sacrificing aspiration shoppers (ex-1 sale@ 12k or 3@6k). On a different note have you seen the lambskin(Malletage?) Speedy 25? I noticed it on the LV site and am curious. Don't need another black bag but the design is appealing...

I think the ad with Penelope Cruz and Brad Pitt is supposed to be an hommage to the movie « Un Homme et une Femme », by Claude Lelouch ? But maybe I think that because I’m French, I don’t know. 🤷‍♀️

I love Chanel. Bought luxury starting early 2000s. I have been priced out of chanel. Even if I could afford a bag, even if it was not a flap at 5-6k, I just can’t justify it anymore. It’s overpriced for what it is, quality is down, experience has changed etc. even with LV , even if it’s at a lower price range than chanel, the quality is terrible and it takes me 3-6 times before I get a quality piece and I just find that annoying … it’s more annoying now. 😂

It is very annoying to get a bag of good quality! Even Dior, it took 3 bags for me to get a good one last December.

I laughed when you read those Chanel prices because I hear terrible things about their quality lately. I'm glad that I bought my bags before the prices went up and quality went down. I noticed that people are burnt out from shopping, in general. Like you said, we all shopped a ton during the pandemic and brands keep putting out so much stuff. Trends come and go so quickly. We're tired. If you're ever bored in Vegas, you should check out the spas at the hotels. I love the one at the Aria!

The prices are laughable for sure! Did they go back to 24k plating? No. Did they improve the quality, no. I am glad I got my bags back in the day too. I love the spas in Vegas! :)

I don’t think luxury is dying. I think people have decided to just enjoy and use what they already own. The high prices are also a factor. I have not been a luxury store in months. I do check out what’s new online but nothing peaks my interest.

I think luxury had its time and now the masses are over it. Like with sneakers or makeup that gain extreme attention and popularity and then it just levelled out. People moved on to the next thing. Sneaker heads or makeup junkies are still gonna buy the newest release but the rest are over it and just buy whatever they feel like 🤷🏻‍♀️
