Is Kidney Disease Curable? Can Injured Kidneys Get Better?

Is Kidney Disease Curable? Can Injured Kidneys Get Better?
These are two of the most common questions I get asked as a Nephrologist (kidney doctor).
When people are first told their kidneys are not working well, the first thing they often wonder and ask is "can my kidneys get better?". It is a natural question, but it also a complicated one to tackle. So today I am going to address those questions and hopefully give you all some answers. Stick with me as this is not a simple "yes" or "no" topic.

Working as a kidney doctor, I found that my patients were often unaware of just how important diet and lifestyle were and how often they felt unsupported by generic advice to “eat healthy”. The home cook in me hated hearing this, so I set out to find a better way.
I began to combine my medical training and love of food, making videos of simple recipes that were based on science and packed with flavor. Instead of just saying “eat healthy” to my patients, I could give them the resources they needed to make a real difference in their health.
Kidney doctor, passionate home cook, and KZread sensation Dr Blake Shusterman empowers people to proactively manage their health by stepping into the kitchen. The author of several cookbooks with over 100,000 KZread subscribers, The Cooking Doc® believes anyone, at any age can transform their health with small changes that make a big difference. Based on science and packed with flavor, Dr. Blake’s simple recipes have inspired home cooks everywhere to change their diet, retrain their taste buds, and transform their health.

Hi Doctor, I have recently had prostate issues, I have had 2 surgeries during the last 13 months and then diagnosed with hydronephrosis and accompanying blockage. I’ve had stents and nephrostomy tubes. My next surgery is scheduled for next month; the so-called ureteral reconstruction. I don’t have diabetes and my blood pressure is controlled. All of this happened over a 13 month period. I am 67 and my BMI is normal. At worst, my eGFR went down to 13. Most recently, it has gone up as high as 34. I guess I have a complicated case. I have an initial appointment with a nephrologist next month. I want to stave off dialysis as long as practicable. Any thoughts will be appreciated. Thank you.

Hello- I recently overdosed on Vitamin D. It's been a nightmare. All the doctors I've seen either know nothing or very little about what's going on in my body. My kidney function tests have all come back normal, as well are urine tests. My CT scan and an ultrasound on one side didn't show any stones or blockage. I didn't have excess calcium bc the supplement I was taking also had K2 (along with the D3) in it. I am experiencing pain, and I feel like I'm dying, and I can't get any help. My kidneys still hurt-much less than in the beginning about a month ago. Also my urine has a weird substance in it, like oily sediment type swirls, mostly after I eat. I have also been getting pain throughout my abdomen and body, including my nerves (I think). I have no explanations, but I'm so worried something is going on in my kidneys and I'm not catching it in time. Please, if you have any advice, I would greatly appreciate it. I'm very scared, and I don't know what to do. I am going to see a urologist soon. Should I go to a nephrologist instead? My doctor says urologist bc of my abnormal urine. I just don't know. Thanks for the video. I really hope to get an answer back from you. Thank you.

Go to a nephrologist definitely. Your kidneys aren't supposed to pass thick substances like that. That could be where the pain comes from

Exactly. Blood pressure of course fluctuates in us all. That is why I always encourage my patients to do it at home, when they are in a relaxed environment, to really get accurate readings - and then share those with their doctor.
