Is it worth getting a motorcycle in NYC? Should you bother? v828

I hear this question all the time. "So you're moving from XYZ to the big city, should you get a motorcycle? Is it worth it? " This question triggers me.

    I'm doing sober October this month and I have used my bike as a reason to not drink. This is the most I have used it to get around the city, including commuting to manhattan daily. I have to say it's the best thing I have done for myself. Only once you are removed from relying on the subway to get around do you realize how much it sucks.

    "Get the bike. Ride it. Do it." YEP! I am not in NYC, I don't have a Ducati. I am in Michigan, live in a suburb, ride on mostly rural backroads on my Triumph Speed Triple RS and the same thought here holds - DO IT. Live, don't just exist.

    Triple RS is a fuckin BEAST. My buddy is scheming on getting one any time now. Life is too short to not experience things, even if its discomfort at times. Riding in NYC is just like moto camping, can be a pain in the ass to get it all together but once you hit that magic moment it all makes sense.

    Only reason I debate is the weather, I’ve lived in nyc my whole life and now how cold it gets and how annoying it is in the winter and like maintenance and warming up tired before going out sounds like a pain, traffic and parking pain is a norm for natives to nyc so that doesn’t really matter we WILL manage that but like how are peoples experience with cold weather??? Do you just not ride out those days and choose car or train??? Do you stop riding for a whole month when the temp is less than 30??

  • @ducatinyc

    @ducatinyc

    Just get proper good all season all weather tires - like the ones I use. Bridgestone Battlax T32s or similar. Also, you should join a garage so you can do all your maintenance and whatever when it gets cold. Parking it is what it is. I rent a parking spot by my building. I ride year round. I've ridden in 15F, have a few vlogs of that here. I only dont ride when its snowing and iced over. The rest I ride. Snow doesnt stick around in NYC as you know, too much traffic. Heated gear, heated gloves and the love of riding. Thats all you need.

Riding that bike weaving around traffic taught me so much about dealing with cars in the city as I commuted 6 miles everyday to High School. Then I saved enough to buy a nice sportscar. And it has its perks especially in cold weather but it is ass getting around traffic in the city with parking too. I recently got a Honda CB500F and its the perfect blend of the two options. Insurance is the biggest part of keeping your bike safe. Have great insurance. Also get a Kryptonyte chain and chain it to something immovable. Beyond that, its a wild west out there. Especially with a Sporty lookin bike like a Ninja. But, you can do it.

    I love riding by bandit 1250. But lately I stay away because the police are targeting motorcycles that cut through traffic. I hate sitting behind car traffic when I can easily split lanes at a safe speed. In Queens on the south bound Van Wyck, officers stop traffic on all south bound lanes just to catch motorcycles splitting lanes. So the officers are causing the traffic that makes bikers want to split lanes. They do the same on the east bound belt parkway. Also in NYC, cage drivers for whatever reason don't understand that motorcycles need more time and room to come to a complete stop. I hate when I look at my mirrors and a car is tailgating me as if I was driving a car. I used to drive around with a vinyl sticker on my helmet asking for a safe distance. I enjoy riding my bike the most when going out of state, Long island or upstate NY. They share the road, versus in NYC they don't.

    Weather is your #1 enemy in New York City when riding. Only 3-4 months out of the year is ideal at best to ride, and Cold weather riding gear is expensive, extra, and is a task to even put on. #2 is Motorcycle thieves. My coworker's bike got stolen right outside of work. We tracked the guy who stole it and was trying to sell it on FB Marketplace, pointed the dude to the assigned "detective", and the detective still closed the case and said call your insurance. Unfortunately, his Liability insurance doesn't cover theft, and comprehensive which covers theft was 5x more expensive than your needed basic, minimum liability insurance. It was goodbye Bike for him, basically.

    Super simple. I use a GoPro 4 Silver. Yes, old as hell. And a 3$ usb mic that I found on Amazon. Seems to work and I like it - that is why I'm yet to jump to 7.

    Before jumping to 7, but the regular Go Pro hero 2018 version, it's a GoPro 5 Black in fact. It can do 4K. Search for "gopro hero 2018 hack"

    I was under the impression Hero does not allow for external sound? Its a must for me. And if i update my gopro, i might as well go with the best available.

    Are most people in NYC aware that the United States is actually a fairly large country and realize they are packing themselves onto a teeny tiny speck of concrete on the far fringe of everyone else? I think a scooter might be fun there. Or a para motor. Maybe. A helicopter definitely. Is it really worth it? Always been curious about why people put themselves through the constant hassle. It's definitely not the most attractive city in the world. People are rude. The cops are rude. The city runs a money racket with ticketing. It's awful

    mike soos awww. Im sorry the city have hurt you. Yes everyone realizes that. I have a house in the country to get away. But here is the difference - i dont know what little farm or village or maybe even city you live in - but i would never ever talk shit about it as if i know something you dont. Calm down. This is the best city on earth.

    @@ducatinyc I go to NYC very frequently for work. I didn't mean to offend you since you are from Texas. I've been to just about every city in the country. My criticism was on the city, not the dwellers. If I had to live there, I'd probably opt for a motorcycle over a car. Cars are not fun to navigate there since every 5 miles equates to a half hour of travel. That being said I love your vid and found it interesting.

    Much appreciate reviews on riding motorcycles [and scooters] in cities - especially Democrat-run sanctuaries, like NYC. ..... For the past several years, the TV news media has reported Harley Davidson sales are down. What the boob tube news neglects to mention, maybe because Freedom and Liberty are dangerous to the collective, is that most other bike brand sales, as well as used sales are increasing. ....
