Good Job Will, On my engine I took the valve cover off and turned it over until both inlet valves were closed. Using a right angled scraper I made up and throttle body cleaner I cleaned out all the ports one by one until finally putting an air blower down the port to expel the loose carbon and TB cleaner. Make sure you stand well clear doing this and protect the paintwork ! Cheers Jamie

Well done great job with the egr and intake clean. I’m a diesel mechanic and have worked on many 1HDFTE engines. Depending on how many kms the vehicles got check the valve clearances and on many occasions this makes a big difference. Also replace all filters, air, fuel with genuine filters. Also I recommend only use BP ULTIMATE DIESEL. Also those injector lines need to be replaced every 120,000 kmls. Injectors can be sent to your local diesel fuel shop to be tested for spray pattern and spray duration pulse. Good luck I love these engines and service every 5000kml.

Is it black soot or more of a greyish colour? Black soot is unburnt fuel and you commonly see this when planting it before the turbo has time to spool up. You see it a lot in my videos too because my HZ doesn’t have a boost compensated pump so before the turbo is at peak boost, it’ll be running a bit rich. Of course the FTE has a map sensor along with other computerised bits so it should compensate fuel for the air it’s getting anyway. It could also be a blocked air filter? I’ve seen more of a grey soot in diesels that live their life in town and never get a proper run on the highway. If you’d just bought the vehicle I’d be doing a complete service- all filters and oils if it needs it, and then taking it for a nice 30 minute run on the highway for starters

  • @Beng177

@@WillsLandcruiser It is more of a greyish soot, It has been sitting for the better part of 3 years only started a once 8 months ago to shift it out of the way before me buying it a couple weeks ago. The rear diff centre cooked itself from lack of oil and is the reason it was parked up - and I can't give it a good run just yet until I get a new one/rebuilt. For now it's just moving with the front diff. And yes, first thing I did was all new filters and oil. But yeah even just putting around in first it seems to blow a bit of soot, particularly when giving it little revs and taking off. Clears up almost completely if you hold an rpm. If I remember I'll reply here with what the cause is and if a good run solves the issue after I get a new diff.

I owe it to videos like yours, don't think I would have done it otherwise. Does that cruiser really have 617,777km on it?? That's insane! (Although totally believable being a Toyota Cruiser)

Haha yes, dad’s cruiser has about 630,000 now and mine has 620ish. They’ll go forever

Hahaha egr is to reduce NOx. Came out in the 90s for toyota. Its a service part. Needs to be cleaned. Blocking just means you will need to need clean it less. Doesnt give more power, you just dont loose power over time. Also brakeclean works better than degreaser but costs more. If you have time. Just sit it in a over cleaner bath overnight (lazy way to clean) Wait! Fair enough the engines choked as fuck but you shifted at just over 2Krpm and lugged around at 1Krpm(before turbo spool) in second gear then after the clean you shift at 3Krpm putting you at 2Krpm (withing turbo boost spec) in second. Aples to aples please. I get its hard to remember after a day or so but still. Other than that. Keep it up

Liam Cooper Yeah nah I’m pretty new to the EGR stuff haha as you can tell. I may have been using “power” incorrectly, what I meant is that the engine was very choked and as a result of that it’s sluggish because obviously the AFR is all wrong when it can’t get the air it needs. And yeah I realised it wasn’t the ultimate comparison, you’re right. But it does give a fair indication, and if you watch closely it shot up in the revs in 1st as well as 2nd gear after the clean. It may have not been exactly the same change into 2nd before/after but there is a huge difference in how fast it climbs in revs now that it can breathe

@@WillsLandcruiser absolutely. It doesnt take much to choke it. Interestingly, how did you clean the head fully? To block the egr, the just need a blanking plate. A retune of the electric governor maybe required. Im not too sure about the sensing side of the egr on a FTE motor. But on the early version it was as simple as just putting a blank plate in. If you wish to keep the egr then a good catch can is recommended. Will help slow and stop the build up as it wont have oil to mix with.

Liam Cooper Yes the poor thing was struggling a bit. We just did the best we could and scraped a heap out, got in there with degreaser, high pressure cleaner, air nozzle, all that. We only went as far as the intake manifold so a real decent clean would show even better results. I personality wouldn’t like to keep it on there but I do realise it’s “illegal” to block them. I reckon we will be getting a catch can system pretty soon

@@WillsLandcruiser its only illegal if you get busted with it. Basically if you're stock they wont look at you. If you get a shit tune that blows heaps of smoke and block your egr, you will get looked at. So many people get bad diesel tunes. I dont know how they dont understand that smoke is bad news for a diesel...

Liam Cooper Yeah aye black smoke means a rich ratio right? Not good at all for Diesel engines. Well thanks for your advice! I’ll take all that into consideration and I definitely reckon dad needs to spend some money on it 😂

Awesome video, thank you! For anyone else wondering, it had 617,777 km on the clock. Which would explain the buildup. Toyotas are infamous for losing a bit of performance after half a million or so ks.

The EGR is an absolutely ridiculous device by the climate brigade. I've removed mine all together! Good luck to the average person who can't just clean it out every 50-69,000 KMs. The damn thing just needs to be removed. Don't forget to custom tune the ECU as well.👍

2021 and you are cleaning the egr INTO THE ENVIRONMENT? seriously? isn't it your country where the world first saw an ozone whole in the atmosphere? should have made aussieht up, it was before your birth though.

What an environmental disaster! You should have taken the parts to a proper diesel shop where they would have done an environmentally safe proper cleaning.
