Is It Snake Oil? - Part II

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

In Part I, we purposely damaged the CP4 in our 2016 Ford Super Duty and pulled our race trailer to the Ultimate Callout Challenge, with the S&S Gen2.1 Disaster Prevention Kit installed.
Now that our truck has made it back to S&S under it's own power, we answer the million-dollar question... did it protect the rest of the fuel system?

    @@benniebenson7131 Great idea. We should add that to the tail end of the installation instructions. All of the metal will be restricted to the pump and the return line up to the filter. Since a new filter will be installed, there is no need to replace any lines. Just replace the pump and filter, and the new filter will catch any residual metal left in the return line. It wouldn't hurt to flush the return line so that you're starting fresh.

    Great video and addition to Part 1 of real-world use the DPK solution. Are there any pressure differences with addition of the Gen 2.1 kit on supply or return sides? Would you recommend use of your DPK with other vendor primary/secondary fuel filtration solutions (HSM)? Keep up the great products, this on the list of "To-Do's" for my '17 F350.

  • @SSfueled

    @SSfueled

    2 жыл бұрын

    Without getting too much into the technical weeds, Gen2.1 DPK does not alter flow volume or pressure on the supply side. Return pressure is variable depending on DRV (pressure regulator on the rail) operation, and fuel consumption. The Gen2.1 return filter increases the average by 1-2 psi, but not enough to affect operation whatsoever. Improved filtration on the supply side is never a bad idea, yet we're fairly confident in the stock Motorcraft fuel filters. Coming from an OE fuel system and engine development background, our engineers are aware of extensive resources put into filtration R&D. We're looking forward to earning your business!

    I tell customers who buy these trucks used to tow it home and don’t drive it 1 mile until it has a kit of some sort installed to prevent damage to fuel systems from cp4 failure. I don’t know whether this kit is better than the others but we have retrofitted 29 trucks with these. The only problem is that our kits came with the old Racor 23303-2 filters which are impossible to find. Sure wish I didn’t have to buy 29 filter head upgrade kits. Difficult sell to that fleet customer.

  • @SSfueled

    @SSfueled

    Жыл бұрын

    That is wise advice, for sure. Based on the amount of fuel lab and real world testing done, we are confident that our kit prevents fuel system disaster from a CP4 failure. Our opinion may be biased, but we think it's the best kit available and if we felt it was lacking, we would change it. Unfortunately, you are now dealing with fallout of us making changes. We truly thought that the Racor filter with the clear bowl was the best option when designing the Gen2 kit. We purposely selected US-made filters in hopes that supply would not be an issue. That was not the case and we were forced to switch to the Gen2.1 spin-on design. We appreciate you choosing S&S and can also understand your frustration in being forced into an upgrade so soon. This is why we are selling the Gen2.1 Filter Head Upgrade at 1/2 price ($60) for the 2022 calendar year. We agree that a $60 replacement filter is a hard sell when your fleet customer is expecting $30, yet after that initial $60 to upgrade, subsequent filter changes will be $15 give or take. We are taking a loss on half-off filter head upgrades, but we feel it's the best way to ease the transition into the new design.

    @@SSfueled Look man let me put it to you this way. That customer Paid me almost $40k to add 29 of your kits. The cost of the filters were $25. Now you have retrofitted those kits with a GIANT ALUMINUM HOCKEY PUCK with your logo that the 10, not 2 micron filter screws in to. These aren’t CARB approved. We got by with the old design because smog technicians couldn’t tell it wasn’t stock. Any technician will Identify the new filter head as aftermarket. It will fail the visual. So now we are faced with getting a Smog referee to okay these or ripping all your kits out and replacing them with your competitor’s kit. Best case scenario I spend $1800 on your stupid retrofit kit and pay a tech 15 hours at $45 an hour to install them. Mind you this is after doing the leg work (on your behalf) with CA. The customer wanted bypass kits installed I made the mistake of choosing yours.

    I'm curious about the micron rating of the return filter. it's my understanding that it's not quite as fine a rating as the original filter on the Gen 2 kit with the clear bowl?? I'm just curious if you have verified on that truck whether anything got past that return filter and into the tank??

  • @SSfueled

    @SSfueled

    2 жыл бұрын

    Great question. The previous Racor filter had a 2 micron rating, but they would not give us the efficiency rating to go along with that. The Donaldson filter rating is 9 micron at 99% efficiency. Before making the change we failed a CP4 on our test bench to collect a debris sample to send to a lab to determine the particle size. The data from our debris sample shows that 10% of the particles are under 4.83 micron, 50% are under 20.3 micron, and 90% are under 80.5 micron. We also sent both filters to an independent lab to get the actual filtration data for the filters. We'll be publishing a full report on our website, but to quickly summarize, the Racor is better in the 4 micron area where there are very few particles, and the Donaldson has a higher efficiency from 7 micron and up, which accounts for 83% of the debris in our sample. That's a very long-winded answer to your first question, mainly to show that we did our homework before making a change. The answer to the second question is easy. We took a sample from the factory fuel filter housing on our test truck and did not see any metal debris. The fuel was amazingly clean for a 6-year-old fuel tank. We'll post a photo on our social media channels. Thank you for asking the questions that matter, and the ones we can answer with confidence.

  • @SSfueled

    Unfortunately, developing a bypass kit for the LML is more of a challenge due to slight differences in the pump. We're not closing the door on it, but it would be much more expensive, and at that point upgrading to a CP3 may justify the extra cost. A CP3 conversion is the ultimate solution that will not let you down. ssdiesel.com/product/lml-cp3-conversions/

    Can that filter be added to the SPE DPK? While it has a Screen, the finer stuff is going to be in the OEM filters, and adding your filter will be the icing on the prevention cake. The screen is good for checking, but the filter is better for getting all the junk.

  • @SSfueled

    @SSfueled

    29 күн бұрын

    We recommend using the Donaldson filter that comes with the kit. We have thoroughly tested it in our fuel lab and in real world scenarios. There could be smaller micron options out there that may not restrict the return flow, but we cannot test them all. We chose Donaldson based on an reliable supply chain and great filtration performance. Also keep the efficiency rating of the filter in mind. The 9-micron rating of the Donaldson filter is at 99.5% efficiency. When the micron rating gets smaller, so does the efficiency. The Donaldson filter has a 4-micron rating at 94.7% efficiency. Considering that red blood cells are within the 5-7 micron size range, we have complete confidence in the filter we chose for this kit to capture any harmful debris.

  • @SSfueled

    @SSfueled

    Жыл бұрын

    Due to differences in the LML and Cummins CP4 variants, mainly the gear pump, it would be very challenging to design a DPK that will work with those CP4s. It is possible, but would be much more complicated, and the cost would start to approach that of a CP3 conversion. At that point, most people would choose to pay extra to have a pump that will not fail. The benefit of the DPK is the low cost, but that would not be the case if we designed one for the LML and 19-20 Cummins.

    We would love to have your business, yet we cannot warranty a fuel system that we did not sell. We know our kit works, we have testimonials that our kit works, and we've proved that our kit works by sacrificing our own truck. When it comes to fuel system failures, we've learned to never say never, but it would require a blip in physics for our kit to not work. In that case, we would refund the cost of the kit. The biggest challenge in offering to replace the entire fuel system (that would have been trashed without our kit installed) is how can we determine when the kit was installed? Not saying that you would do this, but how can we prevent someone from installing our kit as the pump is on it's way out, hoping that it's not too late, or just buying a kit after the failure. We understand your skepticism; we have been hearing reports of Disaster Prevention Kits not working, only to find out it was made by someone else. We are the creators of the THE Disaster Prevention Kit, and many others have since copied us. We can't speak for the copies, but ours works. If it doesn't, we'll give a full refund for the kit.

  • @SSfueled

    @SSfueled

    2 жыл бұрын

    The original DPK will give you better protection than not having anything, but it has the potential to allow some metal to pass on to your FCA if the return screen clogs up completely. The split off point is right at the pump and if the the return circuit gets clogged, there will be no flow through the pump, and it's possible for the pumping pulses inside the case to push contaminated fuel back through the split off that is about 1" from the case. We have only seen this a few times out of thousands sold, but it is possible. With that said, the vast majority of metal is directed out of the return. We addressed this in our Gen2 kit by making the split off 25 inches from the pump.

    @SS, why is the CP4 timing critical and CP3 not? Does it have to do with two vs three pumping assys?

  • @SSfueled

    @SSfueled

    2 жыл бұрын

    You hit the nail right on the head. An 8-cylinder engine fires an injector 8 times per revolution. A CP4 has 4 pumping pulses per revolution. There is a slight drop in rail pressure every time an injector fires and a slight increase in rail pressure when a plunger pumps. The OEs prefer to time the pumping pulses to offset the injector pulses to have the least effect on rail pressure for improved fuel metering accuracy. A CP3 has 3 pumping pluses per revolution, which cannot be timed with 8 injector pulses per revolution. It's our opinion that CP4 timing is not that critical, other than to hit stringent emissions standards.

After months of back-ordered kits all waiting on Racor filters, we were forced to redesign the return filter assembly around a readily-available spin on filter.
