The terror attack by Hamas has been unanimously condemned. Especially among Western intellectuals, however, this is sometimes seconded by a «yes, but», which in turn leads to indignation. How can we talk about the situation in the Middle East? Is there any way out of this spiral of hatred?

The horror caused by the Hamas terrorists with their incredibly brutal attack on innocent Israelis is hard to put into words, and talking about it is difficult. The attack has been condemned in the strongest terms, but wishing to contextualize the terror, some have added a «yes, but», with a view to the humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza. Must this be seen as an attempt to play down or even justify terror? Can «acute evil» be contextualized at all? And conversely: Can terror be judged independently of its context? Why does it seem so difficult to separate criticism of Israel from anti-semitism in our conversation, and when did we lose this ability to differentiate? How can we escape the cycle of retaliation and move towards forgiveness when injustice and guilt are so deeply ingrained?
Our guest is the German-Israeli philosopher Omri Boehm, professor at the renowned New School for Social Research in New York, who considers the two-state solution a definite failure and instead proposed a binational republic on the territory of present-day Israel and Palestine in his 2020 book «A Future for Israel - Beyond the two-state solution». Barbara Bleisch and Wolfram Eilenberger have spoken with Omri Boehm.

Fast wertvoller als die inhaltlichen Aussagen ist die Haltung, die Herr Boehm zeigt und die in der gegenwärtigen Situation leider selten anzutreffen ist: Besonnenheit.

very intelligent interview I agree with a lot of what Omri said but I disagree that the two state solution failed - the two state solution was never tried out. Palestinians leadership refused again and again to peace process prepositions and never tried seriously to build a parliament and a democratic system. It is true, due to the last years of settlers politics that the two state solution get's far less realistic. It is sad. There is one thing that they did not talk about which is EDUCATION - in my opinion, one of the most important premise to peace in the middle east, is the complete change of the educational system in Palestinian territories and in Israel. Palestinian need to learn the history of the jewish people and vice versa. I had luckily a great history teacher that taught us extra to the curriculum about the Nakba, Dir Yassin and Savra and Shatila and I thank him until today about it. I think this should also happen in Palestinian schools and the indoctrination and hate against Israeli should be immediately stopped. This should be reached through a peace agreement and unfortunately, as long that we have Netanyahu and Hamas as leaders of this region that is something we can forget about it.

Prinzipien auf falsche Annahmen der konkreten Situation führen fast immer zu Falschen Entscheidungen ;) Daher ist das Thema nicht Prinzipiel zu lösen, sondern insbesondere auf konkreter Ebene

@@xsrothebeginner8658 - Ein wichtiges Prinzip für mich: die Welt nicht voreilig aus fertigen Annahmen zu konstruieren, insbesondere in dichotomischen Fragen der Politik und Ideologie. Mir hilft das persönlich, ich habe ein Problem mit Seite ergreifen und mit Fahne wedeln.

@@SuperTazuki schön wär's - wäre die Entscheidung um die Fahne für immer aufgeschoben. Das Konkrete, seine Verbindungen und seine Geschichte kann da, denke ich, faktisch gegen chronische Neutralität helfen.

@@xsrothebeginner8658 Neutralität ist in politischer Praxis oft ein opportuner, serviler Verzicht auf eigene Souveränität - daher keineswegs neutral. Beharren auf Prinzipien ist dagegen völlig neutral - fast unpolitisch. Nicht einmal moralisch - reine Ästhetik, an Taten angewandt. Keine moralischen Fehlurteile und Überbrückungen aufgrund einer "gute Fahne - böse Fahne" Metaphysik. Es ist mühsam durchgehend zu Täuschen!

Hilfreicher Beitrag! Ich bitte einmal darum, den Begriff „Religion" zu klären! Vor allem zuerst ethymologisch! Dann könnte es sein, dass auch die Aufklärung eine neue Form von Religion hervorgebracht hat. Bei allem Respekt! In der Folge davon wäre dann zu klären, was die Fundamente der unterschiedlichen Religionen sind!

Israel had the chance in the sixties of living in peace after the agreements, instead chose breaking the agreements and went for expansion. Since when explanations means justification? Listen to Chomsky please. Peace

One thought though: I think it's inappropriate to use the term jews instead of israelis. Not all jews are nor want to become israelis.

Fände es cooler, wenn die Kultur Sternstunden auch mal auf vielleicht 20 oder 30 Minuten begrenzt wären. Eine Stunde hört sich kaum jemand vollständig an. Stattdessen verfolgt ihr stur euer Einstundemodell.

Danke für die Rückmeldung! Wir überlegen das ab und zu auch, allerdings braucht es für eine richtige Vertiefung halt einfach Zeit. Wir geben aber Kapitel an, falls nur ein Aspekt des Gesprächs interessiert, lässt sich direkt dahin springen. Und in der Sternstunde Religion gibt es regelmässig 30-minütige Gespräche.

Ich würde mir ja auch 90 Minuten vorstellen können: als Podcast in 1,5 facher Geschwindigkeit hört sich das auch schnell weg. So können also die Meinungen auseinandergehen

Bitte nicht! Der Kurzvideotrend hat schon genug Schaden angerichtet und wer nur Häppchen wünscht, hat bereits jede Menge Auswahl. Hier nimmt man sich noch die Zeit, die es braucht und das ist richtig und wichtig.
