Is it possible ever to be free of self-centred activity? Is there a real self? | J. Krishnamurti

Subtitles available in: CHINESE, ENGLISH, FRENCH, GREEK, ITALIAN, PORTUGUESE, SPANISH, THAI, VIETNAMESE
Brockwood Park 1979 - Question #1 from Question and Answer Meeting #1
'Is it possible ever to be free of self-centred activity? Is there a real self apart from the self-created image?'
This channel is managed by the Krishnamurti Foundation Trust, UK, and by the Krishnamurti Foundation of America.
The role of the foundations was described by Krishnamurti when he said, 'The foundations will see to it that these teachings are kept whole, are not distorted, are not made corrupt. They will not give rise to any sectarian spirit in their activities... nor create any kind of place of worship around the teachings or the person.'
We maintain extensive archives of Krishnamurti's original works and all four Krishnamurti foundations are actively engaged in the publication of material in various forms.
Our videos contain thousands of subtitles in more than 25 languages, translated by volunteers from all over the world. If you would like to help us with translating subtitles, please contact us at digital@kfoundation.org

Is "SEE MY SOUL " irony then? I guess so. In my personal research from Krishnamurti's talk, i read that soul, "ANIMA" in latin, comes from greek "ANEMOS", which only meat "WIND", and was therefore not MY..., and didn't actually mean anything, just silent passive sensitiveness.

To be free of attachment. To possessions, reputation, relationships etc.... It seems that for any of us to be free, means that we must also be free from attachment? The speaker said, "When you see that one of the major factors of the self is attachment and you see what it does in the world..."If you see the truth of attachment then that very truth is so; it is actual. Then you're free from it. Your own perception sets you free.... will you do it?" It rings true to me.

If somebody is listening to it, that means somebody has initiated the process of transformation by listening those magical words.

"We" are Not taken away by the thought process. The 'we' itself' is a thought . 'we' can never understand that 'we' is a thought unless the observer is above the level of thought. How can it happen? Ans: Only when there is no observer in the observation. There is only observation without the 'we' - the observer

Where there is so called "self"(ego) there must be conflict. More you try to get rid of it, more you are strengthening it. Is it possible to detach oneself from everything? From your own experience, from your own "life". Will you do it? Yes, you can. Then you will dissolve yourself into the Heart of God and realize that you live forever.

@Abdulrahman Al-Anazi I feel it does relate to. Seeing the bad side of nation/patriotism or for example money is easy. And there are many examples of its destructive power. So strong that it is easy to forget that it has light and good sides as well. It let us cooperate in great numbers without knowing everyone personally. Do you know the person generating your electricity or your ambulance driver or store clerk? He only does it since he get paid and a nation build roads. People carrying for people they've never met and never will. It also can be used to hate people you've never met. But I don't feel it is the fault of nations or religion per se. Yuval gives a bigger picture to understand better 😊

Though he is Great speaker and perfectly told about self... Surprised to see he did not understand the eastern /indian approach of same thing. And many times he pointed that few particular approaches r incorrect which indicates he did not understood the depth of Buddhism/ Advaita vedanta. Here he asks to think.. eastern approaches says think and if u cannot think then here are another ways like Bhakti /meditation etc..

//particular approaches r incorrect which indicates he did not understood the depth of Buddhism/ Advaita vedanta. // Which is totally wrong of you. He has mastered Buddhism and all of the Vedic including the Upanishda during his leanings with the Theosophical Society. But he never utters a word about it. But he has understood the true meaning of the freedom which you may have not! Do more research on him and make a judgement about a man of that caliber! You have proven your level of understanding with that, sorry.

This mans energy is not right, he talks a lot of nothing, we are bound by our attachment to this world, this is the human condition, we do need to learn true realities, which will help us look in as an observer, but we can not detach the self, the self is the means to observe and learn, without it you create a psychopath! So his teaching is dangerous, we need to learn to be contented and be an observer looking in, this perception is good for looking at the higher perceptive, ego is important so is fear and love these emotions help us navigate in our world, our goal is to keep it all in balance, that’s the great mystery!

Here's my problem with his philosophy.... If I were to make no effort and just be myself, what if I am a murderer? A thief? No effort, no trying, means being exactly who you are right now amd following every impulse. And we are full of sin.

oh ya I agree with you for sure, although I think he meant it towards the audience, hehe murderers well you could say that they are full of self since they couldn't give up wanting to murder, although?! like you were saying its directly because they don't think enough about others a spontaneous empathy that doesn't stretch as it comes from your own perceptions of self in having awareness of ones emotional state, kinda autosignosia which may impede perspective taking, although this kind of empathy can be learned as a result it will generate a once diminished percept of self state thats created with more nuance, or greater affect. I think it is both that self is inflated in desire hence impulse control problem and diminished in spontaneous and possibly understanding as it comes from muted foundation. hope this helps

Hello, MasonArt. You pose a good question. The following is my comment to the best of my understanding of J. Krishnamurti sayings on "effort". Do not take my response as representing his teachings; that is something you have to engage on your own. So, respectfully, here goes: If you are a murderer/thief ("mt" for short for this discussion), any effort to change means the mt is still the actor. No matter what effort the mt makes, the mt actually is perpetuating himself/herself/itself. The actor/effort-maker and the act/effort are inseparable. So, effort continues or pre-supposes the existence of the effort-maker, so to speak. But, consider: What if effort is non -existent? You indicated that if you make no effort, you are what you are (an mt). Consider the opposite: If no effort is, (if the mt is not acting/"efforting" or no effort of any kind is made at all), who or what is there - since the mt is absent? The mt cannot be where it does not make nor generate no effort. So, what is there, then? We can say that the mt "IS NOT", or 'no effort' does not allow any actor to arise. Be clear, too - that 'no effort' is NOT from any 'effort' by an actor. Rather that 'no effort' is an outcomet of awareness of the nature of effort. One cannot make a state of 'no effort' come about directly...trying directly would ironically involve effort, wouldn't it? No, 'no effort' is cessation that comes from being aware (beyond just knowing) of the nature of 'effort' and 'no effort'. Hope you continuing questioning and coming upon realizations on your own. I do NOT wish you good luck on your journey. Unnecessary for what faces you. Go it alone. So, in the truest sense, 'no effort' ceases the continuation of the actor, and thereby his continuing state and 'muschief' (as K is fond of referencing to the misdeeds, confusion, etc. we engage in...your so called 'sin'). And, what state/being comes when you make no effort? Roughly, it's nameless because it is what you've not come across before. It is nothing familiar. (And it will NOT be an 'experience'...that's another discussion.) All these you are free to delve into, apart from my discussion.

He says that where there is division there must be conflict. I don't get that point. I am a Greek. Do I automatically have a conflict with a Frenchman? I am not the tree and I have no quarrel with the tree. Can someone elaborate?

Conflict and division has nothing to do with anything like this. If it did, there would be constant conflict with every other we come into contact with. This is why different types of ego exist. 'Self' is not created. It is planted at birth. It is not possible to remove it, nor even be free of it. All that can be done is to try and be the best one can. It takes constant effort, or 'mindfulness' as it's called. The true inner will always burst through though at the first sign of emotional disturbance. As an example, it is JK's ego that makes him behave the way he does. He is being his self, just talking in this video. He is attached to what he believes. Detachment means what it says. It is not a creation of the self, nor even by any kind of notion of a higher self that is the true 'you'. It is bestowed. Nothing has any affect on it, nothing overcomes it. All this reference to other nations, marriage and such is meaningless. Such is just material thinking. True detachment means all other members of humanity mean the same to you, Full stop. Forget belongings and anything else you heard. Nothing else need be said.

Bornix Nyine It is far more basic than that. It comes down to individuals that one doesn't even know. Never met, no matter what wrongdoings they may have done. Would you feel the same way about a mass murderer as you do your own family members fx? This is the true meaning of detatchment. Unconditional is the associated word. For all JK's wise words, he still spoke often in material terms. I do not use the description of 'higher self'. I am a human being that is here to represent the 'interests' of something that cannot be described. A proxy. That is all.

Bornix Nyine Course it's Ok. We're just kicking things about. However... What you are saying is not based on your own truth. Not your own thoughts. You are quoting theosophy. Blavatsky etc. Blavatsky makes no sense to me. Leadbeater was involved with JK. Leadbeater spoke of Kundalini. He knew nothing of it. Even JK doesn't agree with Leadbeater on the subject. Such material is of no value to anyone. How can that possibly be part of a discussion on anything except what others have stated. Where does that involve the realities of what 'higher self' is? You state that you are God incarnate? How do you support that?

  • @ChaoticaExtreme

Bornix Nyine "If we knew everything and therefore our own truth, there wud be no need for learning from any1. Naturally this is not the case" That's just according to you though. One doesn't need to know everything. If you have no own truths, how do you know what you learn is relevant? Truthful? Blavatsky's words obviously mean more to you than mine. Is it because the person is a well known? A celebrity? "This divine spark is the same for you and all life but you need to investigate the matter further to clearly understand it." Now you are telling me I don't understand. I already understand it. It is not the same for me. When I die, It's finished. A new body will replace this one and my 'Soul' will continue to evolve. I am but a vehicle. God incarnate I am not. You can't place that on me since you already stated you are still learning. I ask you again.. How do you know? Are you not aware that one's own truth comes from within? Do you have no doubts at all about the things people tell you? Obviously, where these big names are concerned you don't, but you should. I can listen to who I like, but the final choice of whether I accept the words is mine.

  • @ChaoticaExtreme

Bornix Nyine "u shud not be prejudiced with my learning from Blavatsky or theosophy at large" I haven't. You have done so to me instead by telling me what I am, and how wrong I am on several occasions. I only asked rellevant questions regarding your own claims, and the belief that you follow, in an attempt to see where you come from. All claims I made were in regard to myself only. You can't, or won't answer anything I ask you, but refer to your group of people instead. "keen on wat the soul is and wat it is not" The soul is indescribable to me. JK doesn't even believe in the existance of one. Nor God either, yet you say he is one of your teacher group. JK also makes a point about not copying others words. So you see that you come across as confused to me? Yet you try to tell me how it is. Sorry if you felt uncomfortable but that's the way it is when one wants the truth. If you're done, then OK. Take care.x

But if you do then it has been done. Not you have done it. I know you see this problem, this conundrum K. Yet, you make it sound like it is my fault that I carry on with the status quo.

Not "wrong" maybe is "not the way". Attachment is forcing, is conflict. Don´t analize, don´t rationalize it. Let it grow naturally from inside, without YOU thinking about it, let it flow, let it be, naturally. Don't think about it, just feel it, live it. It's the purest way

Because one tends to rationalize everything, to think and overthink. Just accept it, live it, let it flow. Stop fighting against it, stop searching, that's conflict. Just accept it and feel it. It sounds simple, it seems complicated, but once understood it is simple again.
