The roots of Glam Metal started with Aerosmith, KISS, Alice Cooper, 70s Ted Nugent, etc., then along came Van Halen, which added an updated sound, less based on Jimmy Page licks. Like every style, no one person invented it. It really evolved. By 1992 the music was tired and predictable. It makes sense that things would go the other way, toward Grunge.

Yes I agree. It got over saturated, too many copy cats. The labels signed every band hoping one would be a hit , but a lot of those bands were terrible… the genre killed itself ..

44:50 it was the opposite, they'd release the heavy song first to get the guys into the band, and then the "power ballad" to get their girlfriend or younger sister into the band and then they could sell out arenas... the HEAVY metal bands and their fans were jealous that they got all the money, arena tours, headline acts, music videos and magazine covers and started calling them hair bands or posers or poseurs (which is a term which was adopted in music YEARS before to put down the Punk Wannabees and copycats when Punk music took off) in Extreme's case they were coming off popularity from Beethoven (Nuno Bettencourt's guitar solo) in 'Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure', second album came out - I bought it the day it did which came with a free ticket to see them at Sundance on Long Island (with Alice In Chains as one of the opening acts - they were promoting them both (as well as Electric Boys & Faith No More) as "funk metal" as grunge hadn't come out yet). First single was the rocker 'Decadence Dance' with the Queen-like piano intro and Nuno's amazing guitar work, second single was 'Get the Funk Out' with that funky bass & rhythm section and the horns that fellow Boston band Aerosmith had been using, third single was GOING TO BE 'When I'm President' which was a tongue in cheek political stab at George Bush Sr. (and was going to headline MTV's Rock the Vote to get Clinton elected) but because the First Gulf War started the record company released 'More than Words' which is in itself a great song - at least the album version is - and it EXPLODED and then the rest was history. Mr. Big same thing, got the guys in to see Paul Gilbert from Racer X & Billy Sheehan from David Lee Roth Band play - they had the electric drill song gimmick 'Daddy Brother Lover Little Boy' song as the first single (while Eddie Van Halen was doing the same thing on Poundcake) and then 'To Be With You' took off... I think what KILLED the genre was MTV & the music industry promoting grunge instead (for some reason we could have rap & hip hop or country & western but we weren't allowed to have metal AND grunge at the same time so half the metal bands started putting out grunge albums) and the MOMs started liking the music, once that happens, music (which is geared towards teenage angst) no longer became "cool"... your older cousin or brother loved the first Def Leppard album On Through the Night, you loved the second one High 'n' Dry, your younger brother loved Pyromania, your sister loved Hysteria and your mom loved Adrenalize.... and everyone hated Slang

I saw Extreme in A small theatre in Spring Valley around that time - second album .. I like their first album better .. at the end of the Hairband era. They would release the ballads first. Bands hated it , cause they didn’t want to be a “ ballad “ band .. honestly that whole hair/ glam thing was ok. I’m more of a Heavy music guy .. motorhead , priest , sabbath. The other stuff that came after Ratt, Dokken, Wasp, etc just kind of got ridiculous… they all started to look and sound the same … I agree with you that the style killed itself , and I’m glad it kinda did … the industry ran out of bands to sign , most of them went no where and it became a waste of money for the major labels to sign and push bands that had nothing new to offer.. and it just died .. then grunge took over , back to basics with out all that stupid costume and big hair crap… And thank god for Guns n Roses to kick things in the ass as well & Metallicas black album.. i still listen to Dokken , Bullet Boys, Kix … and a ton of other bands In that genre ..

@@augie3281 I'm probably about 5-6 years younger than you so I had heard Photograph on the radio but really got into them with the Hysteria album & made my way back to Pyromania. hated half of Adrenalize, all of Slang, loved 'Promises' but it took me YEARS to go back and try anything more than the singles from the first two albums and saw what I was missing.... Diamond Star Halos is good, but I would say I love all the Steve Clark era albums - it's a shame because Vivian Campbell is a great guitarist and Def Leppard would be incredible if he played with them like he did in Dio.. I was late to the party but High & Dry is one of those rare perfect albums where every song is amazing and STILL sounds amazing.

@@augie3281 same with Warrant, the record company made them record Cherry Pie and that video ended up making them a mockery of themselves. Dog Eat Dog is their best album - just like Extreme's 3 sides - but besides the first single or two it got zero radio play and was quickly forgotten. it's amazing how a lot of bands, even non-metal ones like Cheap Trick (The Flame), Radiohead (Creep) & Styx (Babe) HATE their best selling song because it was ghost written or attracted a different audience or was written/sung by a former member who left on bad terms and refuse/refused to play it for years... the record companies didn't "lose" money, they wrote off all their losses and paid those bands scraps, they control what is popular and what isn't and purposely buried the 3rd album by a lot of those "hair bands" (Skid Row's Subhuman Race, Dog Eat Dog, Extreme's 3 Sides, MR. Big's Hey Man, Winger's Pull) so they wouldn't have to pay them and promoted the new thing (grunge) for their 2 albums and then did the same thing to them when nu-metal hit and did the same thing to them ... lather, rinse, repeat... NOW since Napster "killed the industry" the surviving labels bought up the smaller ones and they make even more money than ever signing all the new artists to exclusive 360 contracts where they take cuts of their tour and merch money all the while crying poor to anyone who still listens and selling streaming rights.

There’s a lot I like … the image really killed the genre and towards the end some of the bands shouldn’t have been signed at all … White Lion… for starters. The drummer was originally in Anthrax!! Yup , White Lion was a Brooklyn NY band , … the drummer is on the original Anthrax Demos. I’ll show it next time around … there music in the beginning was rock and yeah the way Mike Tramp looked ( like David Lee Roth) and the newer songs that came after the Ep and 1st album were definitely more commercial… and once they got on MYV , they became a “ image” Hairband … but I really don’t consider them Hairband
