Is it feasible to make real DX-contacts on the QDX digital transceiver?

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

QDX digital transceiver from the QRP Labs is a unique phenomena in the QRP community of Ham Radio. Featuring surprisingly high specs on receive, it puts out a clean, spurious-free 5W on transmit. It’s fully digital both on receive and transmit and can run all FSK modes (based on frequency shift, like FT8/FT4, RTTY and others, but no PSK31 though, which is based on the phase shift). The decoding power is such that this little radio easily decodes the weakest signals on HF bands. Watching all these weak signals on the waterfall of my WSJT-X app, I was curious if I could make any contact with those DX (distant) stations across the world? What I’ve found out experimenting on 20, 40 and 60m bands surprised me, and its in the video!
The equipment used was the QDX Digital transceiver from QRP-Labs, V.3, link to their site : qrp-labs.com/qdx.html
My full review of this transceiver is here:
• QDX Digital Transceive...
The very first Version 1 was reviewed, the current version on the market is V.5, but it’s the versions of the PCB with some schematic changes, but not of the radio itself. Version 1 still works as nice as Version 5.
The tiny Power/SWR meter is featured in my other video:

My laptop PC is a CHUWI Minibook.
I hope, this short video will encourage you to try your own luck in hunting real DX stations on the HF bands running the QDX Digital transceiver!

hello! I really like your video, a few months ago I got my amateur radio license in Argentina, unfortunately it is very difficult to get HF equipment that has 100w, but I was lucky and got an ft818 and recently I made contact with Australia on qrp and using a vhf antenna with a 10m tuner, I liked it so much that I put the photos of that night in my qrz, Greetings and many thanks for showing the little QDX 73 from LU5OLA

Congratulations Leandro and thanks for your comment! FT-818 is a great radio, I have, and still use its predecessor FT-817. I think, it would be great for you to complement your radio with one of these little 40-50W apmplifiers, like MiniPA-50, or MicroPA-50, they are available off Ali express and go good with the FT-817. But QRP is always the right way to go, anyway! CU on the bands! 73! 72! Linas LY2H

I’m running about 1.5 watts on 15 meters with my QDX (9 volt supply) and I’ve worked lots of 5,000 Km contacts! Cycle 25 is alive! 73 de ai4ot

Thanks! My antenna is all shown in the video :) It’s the most conventional full-size 80-10m EFHW antenna, with tiny compensation coil (makes work better on 20m and up, 5 turns on 40mm coil former, placed ~2m from the feedpoint, not critical) fed via the low loss 49:1 transformer from Myantennascom. Love your videos. Are you still going to be running your external buck converter with the new board? I saw that qrp-labs includes an internal one. I noticed the documentation still allows 9 or 12 volts and still recommends no higher than 6 volts for the 12 volt version. I ordered the 9 volt version and it should be arriving soon. I have my buck converter ready for it. 73 Ro AI7PD

Thanks Ro! Yes, I'm gonna be running my external buck converter, as it's still necessary to make one's mind up on the power supply voltage used, 9V or 12V. The internal buck converter, as I get it, is used for the sole purpose only- to produce a bias voltage necessary for the TX/RX/LPF switching in a more efficient manner enabling, thus, quite a substantial decrease in heat production on two resistors and the whole PCB, in fact. That's a very interesting and elegant solution and I'm looking forward to seeing it in action on my Hi-band Rev 5 board as soon as I complete the assembly! Wish you good luck and tons of fun with your new QDX! 73! Linas LY2H

I dunno, FT8 sounds terrible buddy. Give me some sweet space ghost Winlink/VaraHF any day! Challenge accepted, I'm going to chase some FT8 DX with my QDX. Been using for some drive up POTA activations lately. I also picked up that swr/pwr meter too from one of your prior vids = legit, I like it. K0ATV
