Hunt on satellites from your back-yard with an IC-705 and a DIY antenna!

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Amateur Radio satellites is an ever popular Ham Radio hobby branch. In this video, I’m trying ( and succeeding!) to deploy a simple Satellite Station in my back-yard and catch a Saudisat 1C satellite, better known as SO-50. I only used my IC-705 transceiver and a simple but very cleverly designed DIY antenna.
You can also make it! By the way, if you only want to catch a satellite, a simple dual band walkie-talkie, capable of operating split in memory mode will do, no need for an IC-705! ( but there is a thousand other good reasons to have this fantastic rig!)

Thanks Brian! It's never too late to start! All you need is just a dual band walkie-talkie and a simple antenna, actually, the better whip antennas for walkie-talkies are doing quite well on the strong passes, so no YAGI is even necessary! 73! Linas LY2H

Yeah, one young HAM I know, having just a novice class license, showed me a map of Europe with so many confirmed DXCC he did via birds, only having a Baofeng UV-5R and home-brewed antenna... When you have a license and radio for HF, you work all the countries on HF. If you don't have any of that, you can still do so with a Baofeng! :)

What a great video! I am setting up a portable satellite station, Arrow antenna and a IC-9700 I have on in the shack so I know how to use it. I also have a IC-705 I may need to try it out on some birds. Thank you for many GREAT ideas!

    Cool set-up you've got! IC-9700 is a monster-rig for serious VHF/UHF/SHF work! Have fun! 73! Linas LY2H

Apart from not being full-duplex, IC-705 is a great rig for satellites (mostly the FM ones of course), since you can 1) store crossband channels into memory, 2) easily tune around the Doppler with the main dial, nothaving to rely on a 5kHz step like on most HTs, 3) tune right from the memory mode (while on various HTs you need to copy the frequency from memory mode to VFO mode, etc.), 4) see the signals on waterfall, which helps you with pointing antenna, etc...., and finally, 5) record the audio on SD card, so you don't have to bother with logging, when you are in busy with antenna, doppler and operating...

You are absolutely right, and your arguments were exactly my arguments when setting-up this configuration! I really like the VFO tuning tracing the signals on the waterfall , and staying in the memory channel at the same time. Thanks for sharing your points! 73! Linas LY2H

Its been a couple of years since I've work Satellites but been working them since 1974 work AO7 when it first went up till it died, and also work early RS 3-11 birds mode A . and the RSCW robots back then were lot of fun. and I was thrilled when AO-7 came back to life after 30 yr sleep. worked it and JO29 both on CW and ssb. don't like the FM birds that much too conjested prefer cw /ssb mostly cw. thanks for sharing. de Ellis WA1RKS

Labas, Pauliau. Kolkas niekuo neužkimšti :), nes nežinau, ar tikrai reikia, nes šio vamzdelio viduje nėra nieko, ką reiktų slėpti nuo drėgmės ar pan. Kitais atvejais, kai reikia, pvz , vertikaliai antenai pvc vamzdyje, atsispausdinu su 3D printeriu. 73! Linas LY2H

Great video Linas, maybe I'll give it a try on SO-50. I have just started with working on QO-100. That's an easy sat, always available and a very big footprint. 73 and maybe we'll have QSO one day on a satellite or HF. 73 de ON4MGY/OO4M Nicolas

Thanks Nicolas! Congratulations on working QO-100! It's may be easy to operate but quite complicated equipment-wise :) I wonder, what do you use for Uplink and Downlink frequencies? How big is your dish? 73! Linas LY2H

@@Linas_LY2H For my downlink I'm using a Bullseye LNB and an RTL-SDR-dongle with SDR-Console as software. The dish is a 88cm offset. For my uplink I'm using an upconverter from 70cm to 2,4 GHz and an amplifier. The amplifier can deliver up to 20 Watt but I'm using 3 to 4 Watt. The 2,4 GHz antenna is a small helix mounted on my LNB. I'm waiting for my GPSDO to install to have less frequency drift. There is a small video on my channel with the used equipment. kzread.info/dash/bejne/g6iOpLiPc8KdpLg.html
