QDX Digital Transceiver Review. High quality, low price FT8 and all FSK modes radio!

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

QDX Digital Transceiver from the QRP Labs company is really a revolutionary product in the digital Ham Radio communications market. It’s an incredible combination of the highest quality and a very affordable price. FT8, JS8 and all other Frequency Shift Keying based digital modes are running flawlessly on the QDX. The radio comes as a kit, it takes some soldering and toroid winding work. All SMD parts are pre-populated on the PCB in the factory with the small exception in he first-batch units, where minor SMD parts soldering is involved. The Version 2 of the radio is free of SMD soldering. This review is done in January 2022. At the time of writing, the new batch of the QDX Version 3 is expected with no particular date pending the world semiconductors crisis.
This review deals with some aspects of the kit assembly, debate about the best power voltage for the radio, 9V vs 12V, practical demonstration of the FT8 and JS8 modes, featuring the unique self-testing and troubleshooting firmware features of the QDX digital transceiver.

    Linas, thanks for in depth review! QRP Labs is an amazing company, they produce extremely capable products at absolutely funny if not to say ridiculous prices. I recently built QCX mini for 20 m band and it is a little gem, I don't know anything even close to it in capabilities and efficiency in this geometry and at this price tag. By the way, built the key from American Morse, it is nice and nearly indestructible, but by some reason I like the paper clip paddle more! :-)

    Excellent overview of the QDX Linas, thanks for sharing your experiences; kit has arrived and I'm now more confident in assembling and using the kit... fully agree on replacing the power adaptor with the Anderson Power Pole and - after viewing your other video on 9V - I will also use this power option and DC/DC converter. 73 Paul PA2PWM

    I went ahead and placed order... very nice looking qrp transceiver for mobile/digital use. I like the idea of the power pole mod, but will most likely set up as 12v... all my power pole stuff is at 12v, and I don't like the idea of having separate 9v system. Maybe I'll change my mind before I receive the kit!

    Congratulations! It seems like Version 3 is gonna be even more elaborate and nice than the V1 and V2! I’ve also booked one and looking fwd to comparing it with my V1. As it comes to the power supply, well, 12V is OK if you are happy with the reduced power output (3-4W at 12V vs 5-6W at 9V). @LY2H Ham Radio Van Hi, Well you inspired me again. I bought a Pinephone Beta and the clamshell keyboard for it, and rebuilt some of the code to get WSJTX running on it with my QDX. I still need to layout the GUI for use with small touch displays. So, it looks like I may have found a way to use Linux to be more like Linas. :) Cheers and 73s from Brisbane, -Rob

The PC is an older version CHUWI Minibook , 8/128 +128 GB, 8". It turned to be eligible for and recently upgraded itself to Win 11 for free :). The screen is a bit too small for the WSJT-X since I can only see the fragment of the waterfall, but its enough for me :). JS8CALL fits OK. 73! Linas LY2H

    Does the QDX operate RTTY (FSK teletype) ? If so, what software is used ?

    Hello Peter! Yes , it does run RTTY FSK. It does require though, some extra settings in the QDX terminal. I have tried RTTY with my QDX V1 on my Windows 11 laptop with the Fldigi software. Tips by Peter G3SPL is of great value in setting up both the PC and the Radio for the RTTY. It could be found here ( a special chapter under the QDX topic): qrp-labs.com/QDX. Good luck! 73! I have one all ready to go. What antenna do I use? Should I get an SWR meter as well to be able to tune it?

  • @Linas_LY2H

    @Linas_LY2H

    2 ай бұрын

    Hello Dag, congratulations! Hope, you’ll enjoy the journey into a digital world with your QDX. As it comes to the antenna, any antenna you have already will do. But one should bear in mind that the QDX has got no SWR meter in-built , so it’s got no over-SWR protection which would turn the output power down in case of the antenna mismatch. So I would highly recommend to use an external SWR/power meter which would allow you to control the SWR level and the output power comfortably at any time. Any SWR/power meter suitable for the low power of up to 5W will do. One of my favorite analog meters is featured in the video, and my favorite digital tiny meter is featured in my other video here: kzread.info/dash/bejne/m4yMxqeae5rVoLg.htmlsi=h4cnKkpUpl3I0sLb Due to the SWR-related reasons mentioned above, I would recommend to go for resonant antennas which need no antenna tuner, thus you don’t need to tune, thus, you are not risking to push your radio in the condtion when the SWR could become too high during the process of tuning, especially if you are using the manual tuner. With automatic tuner, the tuning is very quick, so the risk of over-exposing the radio to the high SWR is minimal, but, hey, you have been warned! As it comes to the antenna choice, there is plenty of resonant antennas, like monoband dipoles, multiband linked dipoles, trap dipoles, End Fed Half Wave antennas, multiband resonant vertical antennas, etc. It’s up to you to decide! Good luck! 73! Linas LY2H

    @@Linas_LY2H What a wonderful reply -- thank you Linas! So I actually searched for a while on various sites (often via Google images!) and managed to locate that wonderful little SWR meter you show in your video -- I wanted the exact setup you have. I learned that it's an open source design by G8GYW and I found a great implementation of it for under $50 on eBay. I've ordered an Opek HVT-400B multiband antenna (with jumper-selectable coil taps). Can't wait to try this out... your videos are making that possible. Ačiū!

    Hello Elliott, thanks for watching and commenting. Actually, any radio can be used in a mobile application, as long as you can provide right power supply and the antenna to it, if by mobile you mean just sitting in a parked car, not driving :) I like to take my small radios and a tiny lap-top PC and operate from my van or my car. It takes no modification to the equipment. As to your second question , yes, it is possible to use an Android phone instead of computer and operate in FT8 mode. You may check my other video for more details here: Pocket FT8 for Android! FT8CN app review with QDX transceiver. kzread.info/dash/bejne/d6GBmq2vYdi1f9o.html HTH, 73! Linas LY2H

    Thanks! I don't recall what exactly was I using in this video, but surely it was one of the standard purchased dc/dc converters. Since some tome ago, I use a permanent in-line voltage conditioner with my QDX. It's based on a purchased converter in my own 3D printed case. I have a separate video on the 9V vs 12V debate with my in-line voltage conditioner described in detail. kzread.info/dash/bejne/a5ijxNN-eNqfe9Y.html Have fun! 73! Linas LY2H

    can you use this with HDSDR?

  • @Linas_LY2H

    @Linas_LY2H

    2 жыл бұрын

    It's a good question:) Unfortunately, I don't use the HDSDR , so can't make comments on it. What is said in the QDX operating manual (page 7, Note 1) is that QDX CAT commands should also work with other software then WSJT-C and JS8Call. But it doesn't necessarily mean , IMHO, that HDSDR will work with it OK. I guess it would rather not :). QDX is designed for exclusively FSK digital modes, nothing else. Are there anybody around this channel have tried this out? I'd love to know it too! 73! Linas LY2H PS. You could also try the IQ mode in the QDX with HDSDR.
