Is Irish Reunification on the Horizon? Sinn Féin Wins Historic Victory in Northern Ireland Election

In a historic victory, the Irish nationalist Sinn Féin party has won the most seats in Northern Ireland's parliament for the first time ever. Sinn Féin is the former political wing of the IRA - the Irish Republican Army - and favors reunification with the Republic of Ireland. The party won 27 of 90 seats in the Northern Ireland Assembly, while the Democratic Unionist Party, which wants to remain in the United Kingdom, dropped to second place for the first time in decades with 24 seats. We speak with journalist and political activist Eamonn McCann, who says Northern Ireland was founded over a century ago so that "it could be guaranteed that there would always be a unionist majority." That arrangement has now been shattered, he says, and the calls for Irish reunification are likely to increase if Sinn Féin wins government in the next election in the south. "The more the tide toward a united Ireland increases, the more alarmed the unionists will become," says McCann. We also speak with Sinn Féin lawmaker Mairéad Farrell, who represents the Galway West constituency in the Republic of Ireland parliament and who says the party's victory came after a "positive campaign" focused on people's everyday needs.

But with contracts still plundered the RoI until the join of the EU, when Ireland was able to trade freely with the continent, and got infrastructure support from the Union, start of the celtic tiger, become one of the more powerful and modern states in the Union. The English will try to divert so much as possible to make sure there UK can not rejoin the EU, this we call burn the fields and salt the soil. People like Johnson, Farage etc and this include the DUP want their grip back on Ireland. But I realy hope that North Irish and Scotland citizen give London the boot and decide self over the future, maybe north ireland became a own country, or join the RoI or one day the national states lose their power in the EU and strength the regions, what would benefit the island of Ireland and not only Dublin

Way back when I was travelling in an old Land Rover towing a caravan, I spent 3-4 months in Northern Ireland, parked at a housing co-operative an hour north of Belfast. I spent the time there in company with people who had grown up in both faiths. It was like being in an England of a couple of decades ago; health food was chips without the garlic butter, the pace of life was slow. I loved it. However, the tension of the conflict was ever present; a mates brother had been shot a while back; I was shown hubcaps nailed to fences where bombs had taken lives; was told by a panicked Irish friend to keep my voice down when I commented on a newspaper headline in a local shop; an Indian takeawy that I had eaten from was boarded up due to an explosion when I walked past a few weeks later; I walked back from a gig to a place I was crashing in Belfast called The Holy Lands, due to the street names of saints, and there were Daleks (Police Land Rovers) racing around and uproar in the distance. I was not there long, but I failed to understand why any nation would want to be under the authority of another, so was happy to see re-unification. The British are hugely culpable in all that took place after their loss of interest in Ireland as a farm. The forcible deportations to America, the famine, homelessness. It sounds like what our feudal overlords in power at present, want to bring back; only on the mainland. They know that water is short. They know that food is going to be in scarce supply in the near future. The best way to deal with that is to accustom a population to scant resources, and put the blame on the most vulnerable. This sounds awfully familiar, but at some point, the only antidote to a conscious populace is fascism. Power becomes more and more corrupt as it's fear index rises. I think they are very scared.

It must be mentioned that the Alliance Party (neutral) are 1000x more aligned with Sinn Fein & SDLP (nationalist) than they are with the DUP/UUP (unionist). Alliance/SF/SDLP together have a majority and all want a progressive NI. Alliance’s leader Naomi Long is very vocal about how she doesn’t respect the unionists prioritising the union when people are starving. Sinn Fein have also changed their stance from campaigning for an instant border poll to campaigning on bread and butter issues, while asking the UK & Irish governments to lay out the framework for a referendum in the future (aka conversations and debates). Alliance have said they think conversations on a United Ireland are a wonderful idea, they stand for the people of NI and want the best for them, once they are educated they will be able to decide what is best in a referendum. So while unionists have 1 or 2 more seats than nationalists, they don’t have a majority front in the assembly anymore, meaning NI will progress and they can’t do anything to stop it.

"Ireland for the Irish"? If the current rate of immigration continues the Irish will soon become a minority in their own country. The Republic is governed by treacherous, fake nationalist parties and that includes SF. If you really want an Ireland for the Irish you should vote for the Irish Freedom Party.

This is a great result. Sadly, however, the DUP have refused to take part in the shared administration which is an obligation under the GFA. This means that Michelle O'Neill has not been able to take her rightful place as part of the government of Northern Ireland. And, because the Tory Party is backing the DUP, the UK government has not suspended the wages of the DUP politicians as they should have done. But then, the Tory Party has failed to do a great many things which it ought to have done. Such is the pitiful state of UK politics at the present time.

For Americans, we have a different perspective on the Irish situation. Despite some people being prejudiced in the past towards Irish immigrants and various opinions on Christian denominations -- Most Americans today honestly don't care if someone is Protestant or Catholic or denominations within those, and we don't have any thought of Irish people as being anything unusual or separate from anyone else of European origin; it's all part of the melting pot that made up and makes up the common shared background of white Americans (European-American, which doesn't get a hyphenated thing like African-American or Asian-American because European-American is the expected majority). -- So to us, the long history of strife between England and Ireland just doesn't make much sense: Many Americans have English, Irish, Scottish, Welsh, and most of the rest of Europe running around in our family trees. The conflict and prejudice seem pointless, misguided. So reunification makes more sense. And making a real, lasting peace makes sense, both among the neighboring nations and among the neighboring religious groups. Ireland and England (and the other neighbors) would be so much better off as allies where those religious and national differences make no real difference, much like Americans generally don't think about them as dividing, but as mere differences, or even things to celebrate about each other. A reunified Ireland could be (or become) allies and friends with England and vice versa, and be independent, but have treaties for common good. Better that than the continued cycles of violence and prejudice, which are needless. Americans managed to overcome that. Ireland and England should be able to also, to work toward that day.

I was born in 1956 into a republican family and my grandparents were volunteers "members" of the IRA and fought in 1916 to drive the British out of Ireland. My family have always been Sinn Fein voters It was in my DNA to vote for a united Ireland but since the attacks on Irish citizens by illegal criminal immigrants and the total lack of border control in the republic of Ireland which allows thousands of African, Muslims and others who have no respect for our culture, way of life or faith to invade our country I would not be voting for a united Ireland. Sinn Fein along with the other main political parties support the open border policy despite the objections of the native Irish people which lead to the civil disturbance in Dublin last month this was condemned by Sinn Fein who called the people of Dublin criminals It's strange when I was a kid in the North of Ireland an fighting on the streets against the British Sinn Fein said we were hero's and encouraged to fight but when the people of Dublin take to the streets in an act of civil disturbance against Sinn Fein's policy they are condemned.
