Is Hong Kong in China? (Confused) - My First Impressions 🇭🇰🇨🇳

Join me as I explore Hong Kong for the first time! In this video, I take you around the city to see the top attractions. We ride the historic trams, take the steep Peak Tram up to stunning views, see both the modern cityscape and remnants of British colonial influence, eat our way through local foods, meet welcoming locals, and take a relaxing ferry ride across Victoria Harbour. Although there have been recent political protests and unrest, I personally felt safe and had an incredible time discovering this dynamic Asian hub. From the hyper-modern highrises to the traditional temples, Hong Kong's culture and scenery thrilled me at every turn. If you're considering visiting this fascinating destination, I hope my on-the-ground impressions give you a taste of what makes Hong Kong such an exciting travel spot! Have you been to Hong Kong before? Let me know what you loved most in the comments!

HK is super nice, go to the islands too when you have a chance...HK has so much to offer, I used to consider HK the best of two worlds, it's where the east and west converge prior to the 2019 riots (Western MSMs lied completely about it). Yet HK will bounce back. Welcome, Jack.

Hi, Jack, new subscriber here. I can't wait for the next instalment! And welcome to my former hometown. I've since emigrated decades ago, but I still have many fond memories of my former home, so thank you very much for bringing back those memories for me - especially the Star Ferry. I used to ride on the Star Ferry many times when I was younger. To answer your question, though - politically, Hong Kong is officially a 'Special Administrative Region' of the People's Republic of China. Culturally, however, what I've found is that it is very different to mainland China. Hong Kong has its own unique language (Cantonese) and its own identity that is distinct from that found in the mainland. In many ways, the food is also very unique to Hong Kong - particularly its fusion style cuisine that mixes Western influences with Hong Kong flavours (pan-fried spaghetti with baked pork chop and onion sauce, for instance?). Many Hong Kongers (including former Hong Kongers) identify themselves as Hong Kongers first, and when asked where I came from originally, my answer is always and will always be 'Hong Kong'. But part of that cultural identity as a Hong Konger is also political (at least it is in my case) - I don't particularly think much of the central government's crackdown on the Hong Kong protests that has now led to a suppression of freedom of speech in my former home. I can definitely understand your confusion. The answer to your question depends very much on the perspective from which you are asking.

The turbid river water in Shanghai is not due to pollution, but because Shanghai is an alluvial plain. Shanghai was formed because of the sediment deposited here from the upper reaches of the Yangtze River. Therefore, there are no mountains, rocks or beaches in Shanghai, only tidal flats mixed with sediment. Affected by the tides of the East China Sea, the sediment at the bottom will roll with the tide, so it looks turbid, but it is not dirty. Hong Kong has no river estuaries, and the structure is composed of rocks and hills, so the water looks relatively clear.

What you saw in Shanghai is a river, it is called Huangpu River (Yellow Bank River) for a reason, it carries all the sediments from the Yangtze River... it has yellow sediments but it is not ¨dirty¨ as you may think. It's full of wildlife along the way within the city. Victoria Harbor in Hong Kong is a sea channel with salty ocean water that's why it has that awesome emerald color. 😋🖖

@@Felixhongkong Are you from Hong Kong? Regardless of how you feel about the political direction, it’s one thing to oppose and protest the current system, it’s another to think Hong Kong “belongs to the world”, which is embarrassing to hear as a HongKonger myself. I live in the U.S. and average Americans don’t care about Hong Kong. The only reason American politicians and media talk about it is because American ruling elites want to keep American hegemony and power over all others. Many of them even think of the Chinese as a lesser race and so they can’t accept China’s rise. They are using opposition within Hong Kong to try to cripple China. It has nothing to do with democracy and freedom if you know the geopolitical history and its current framework of the U.S. (I suggest you to look up Noam Chomsky and his writings and talks). Seeing how people like you wanting to be subjugated to their dominance is sad. China has problems of course but they have also figured a lot of things out. The U.S. has a lot of problems too including crimes, homelessness, crippling infrastructure and failed democracy (the reality doesn’t reflect how it’s supposed to work on paper). So please don’t think China is all shit and the US/UK are all shiny.

Hi Jack❤❤, Hong Kong has been colonized by the British for many years, resulting in a cultural dependence on the English language, which is a kind of political brainwashing, I believe you can understand what I mean, just like how the Western media desperately smear China today, a large part of Hong Kong people identify with their identity as Chinese, a small number of Hong Kong people think that the British are their fathers, they want to split, they want to immigrate to become British after failure, the Chinese government did not restrict them from leaving, the result is that these separatists were rejected by the British. The reason for their split is that the election of the chief executive of Hong Kong is no longer democratic, how ridiculous, is it possible that the governor of Hong Kong when the British colonized Hong Kong was democratically voted for... Jack, I believe that everyone will be brainwashed by the growth environment to varying degrees, but some people can jump out and look at the problem from a neutral/multi-angle perspective, some people refuse to admit the possibility of being brainwashed, you have only made a short trip in China, if you have the opportunity, you are welcome to travel to China again and have a deeper understanding of here~qwq❤❤

Being a native to Hong Kong I get annoyed at westerners telling me that Hong Kong is a country as they have been groomed to believe so, being so firm on their belief that they can dismiss what I would have to say as nonsense regardless of me living there. There a lot of information westerners get wrong about my city like Hong Kong has always been a part of China and was only leased for 99 years by the British. Hong Kong was never this beacon of democracy under the British in reality we were ruled by hand picked officials from the UK chosen by the British government and were never allowed to vote let alone have a say to have a Chinese Hong Kong native to represent us in the local government.

The lease was in relation to the New Territories only. The Treaty of Nanking in 1842 ceded Hong Kong island to Britain in perpetuity. Following that, the Convention of Peking in 1860 ceded Kowloon south of Boundary Street and Stonecutters Island to Britain, again, in perpetuity. It was only the Second Convention of Peking dated 1898 in which the area known as the New Territories was leased for 99 years to Britain, expiring on 30 June 1997.

There are many discussions about this but ask a local or a Hongkong-er to know the truth (and why do they not want to be called part of the Chinese country) Literally, Hong Kong is NOT IN CHINA but is only a SPECIAL ADMINISTRATIVE REGION OF CHINA. Hong Kong is neither a Chinese city nor a completely independent country. Hong Kong exists as a Special Administrative Region controlled by The People's Republic of China and enjoys its own limited autonomy as defined by the Basic Law. Hong Kong and Macau are both sovereign territories of the People's Republic of China. However, due to the One Country, Two Systems policy, the two regions maintain a high degree of autonomy, hence they are not governed as part of mainland China.

Thank you so much for visiting Hong Kong and making a video about my beautiful homeland. I do really appreciate it. Indeed, Hong Kong is not a country. Yet, it can be ambiguously regarded as a country, as Hong Kong has its own government, currency, passport and, economic and political system - capitalism, in contrast to socialism in China. What's more, the majority of Hong Kong people would rather call themselves Hong Konger, instead of Chinese, since we have developed our own sense of identity over the centuries. I personally am not in favour of Hong Kong being ruled by British nor Chinese government. We should have our own choices to determine our future. Anyway, I appreciate your effort of creating this video of HK and will support your channel as always :) Keep it up and cheers!

Of course not! We speak a different language, have a different law system, and a different government. English is also one of our official languages, and we have a very different city scene. We have a very different stock market, and we uphold different values that emphasize citizens’ rights over the government. Most importantly, we were never ruled by the CCP before 1997. In fact, like my father, many of the older Hong Kong residents are Chinese immigrants who escaped from China during the CCP’s rule in 1949. They escaped due to events such as the 1950 Land Reform Movement, the 1960 Famine, the Cultural Revolution from 1960-70, and the 1989 Tiananmen Square massacre.

The main difference is in HK, being a very cosmopolitan city, I don't think any Hongkonger will gawk at and stop a foreigner in the streets for a wefie, unless that person comes from China. In Mainland China, a foreigner will get a lot of that because the Chinese there have probably not seen a foreigner in their life. As for HK, it was a former British colony so the citizens feel nothing special about foreigners in their midst.

Here are lots of answers to that question. Hong Kong is not in China. In geography, Hong Kong is located in the Southern Part of China that is already divided from its mainland. Unlike Beijing, Shanghai, Nan Jing, Shan Tung, Guilin, etc. are all in located within. Then the next question is Mongolia in China since they're in between China and Russia?? Hong Kong still part of China according to many because it was taken by British before returning to China, but it still considered independent nation considering the currency they used are still different from China and people still have to go thru immigration check point departing and entering between Hong Kong and China.

I have visited HK and mainland China cities quite many times. HK used to be a modern and metropolitan city. The people and taxi drivers were usually rude and most streets were not clean but the foods were fantastic. On the other hand, Shenzhen was just starting to modernize and its transportation was not as good as the one in HK. Today Shenzhen is such a world class metropolitan city with the best infrastructure I have ever seen. Its streets are clean and wide whereas HK is dirty, the people and taxi drivers are still rude, and just super crowded. The difference between HK and SZ was so obvious when I took the high speed train from HK (Kowloon) station to SZ. By the way, the hotel rates are also so much cheaper in SZ than in HK.

I know you are from mainland China. Hong Kong has many years of infrastructure construction, and many houses are more than a hundred years old, so they look very shabby, but many people just like such shabby houses. Hong Kong is a highly developed city, while Shenzhen is just a backward city. Its revenue reflects this. Don’t compare a backward place like Shenzhen with Hong Kong. There is no comparison.

@@Felixhongkong You are totally mixing different concepts. The rank of a city is not solely determined by the income of the citizens. Shenzhen is ranked as an Alpha- (global first-tier) city by the Globalization and World Cities Research Network. Its nominal GDP has surpassed Hong Kong and is among those of the cities with the ten largest economies in the world. Such a city is in no way a backwards city. BTW, Shenzhen's GDP per capita is around $25000 USD, not high, but definitely can not be classified as poverty. Considering the actual purchasing power there, the ordinary people in Shenzhen are definitely not poor people. You are a typical representation of some arrogant hongkongers.

Yeah that's such a great analogy - it's EXACTLY like that. I think all visitors from other states in America will relate as they have to change their money in Hawaii since it doesn't use the US dollar. Then there's all the road signs being in a different language and them driving on a different side of the road to the rest of America. Then there's the completely different legal system to contend with there! And of course Americans - don't forget your passport if you're visiting Hawaii as you'll need it just to get in! And you also can't legally stay there and work there without a visa! Yeah, just the same great point! 😂
