Personal Review: I bought a 2012 Honda Civic ES 1.8L (Manual) I-VTEC naturally aspirated petrol engine (140 BHP & 128 lbs/ft torque) in the UK. I paid £6,000 for the car from a main dealer with a full service history, and it was around 7.5 years old when I bought it (approaching 8 years old in November). The vehicle now has 56,000 miles (It had around 52,000 when I bought it 4 months ago). It returns around 36-40mpg in the city & 50-55mpg on the motorway. My combined use is about 42mpg on average, and I drive it mostly in ECON mode. I spend around £40/£45 to fill up the tank and this lasts on average between 320-360 miles, depending on how I drive and routes etc. Pros: - The seats are comfortable. You could easily do commutes of around 45 minutes - 1 hour and be reasonably comfortable. If you are commuting longer I'd probably opt for the leather seats. - This car is very practical. The seats can fold up to stand items such as plants and suitcases in the bank, you also get a reasonable amount of storage if you fold the seats down. Leg room is also very reasonable. You also have a small storage in the boot under the floor, very useful for breakdown emergency items and insurance documents, spare coat and water etc. - Everything works as it should, no glitches to any of the technology or odd noises coming from the car. - The sound system is very good for this caliber of vehicle. - Honda's reliability record it essentially bulletproof in these cars. - You always feel safe when in this car and visibility is good. It is nice that you have a digital speed display. - You have a timing chain and no a belt, which is always a positive. Cons: - It isn't very fun to drive. Sure, you can take it out of ECON mode and it is slightly more responsive but it never feels fun, and it doesn't handle corners at speed - I'd describe it in one word as 'adequate'. - The engine sounds very rough as higher speeds, rarely do I take it above 70MPH as the engine just feels harsh and you almost feel sorry for it. - ECON mode restricts the power of the car and it is thirsty for higher gears; even then it doesn't give great MPG. - The engine never really feels powerful, considering it is 140BHP... It is not dangerously slow, but it never feels quick, I feel this may be due to the engine not having a turbo... A small compromise to pay for less future headaches, I suppose. Overall verdict: I feel this car is suitable for those whom have perhaps a small family or want something that is safe, reliable and practical that also gets them from point A-B without any dramas and whom aren't overly concerned with aesthetics being a high priority on their list. It never really feels engaging to drive but you do develop some form of attachment to the car, it is very strange. Would I buy this car again? - Hmm, most likely, yes. As stated earlier, the track record of Honda Civics are bulletproof, you always see 2000 reg ones on second hand car buying websites in good solid condition and there is a lot of evidence to suggest these cars get to 200,000 miles without any major issues. Here are some numbers with regards to reliability; The study looked into reliability, breakdowns and repair costs and then ranked car manufactures. The average car was 9-years-old and there were 200,000 in the study. Considering Honda ranked 1st in a reliability survey scoring 87% and average price to repair being £560 (In comparison, Lexus was 2nd with 87% reliability and £1,100 repair bill and Toyota 3rd scoring 80% for reliability and average repair bill of £600). To put this into perspective, 5th on the list was Hyundai, who scored 71% reliability and an average repair cost was £570. kzread.info/dash/bejne/pYl9rZmEj9Selbw.html I would also avoid buying a newer model of the civic, the ones with 1.0L turbo engines giving 120BHP etc, whilst they may be more economical and fun it is likely that they will cause headaches in the future and it appears that Honda are going down the performance route rather than reliability, which is a shame. Also, I would avoid the prior generation to this 2012 model, if you can't budget for the 2012 then get the 2010/2011 model (the prior ones '06 - '09 had some issues which were corrected from 2010), but be aware they aren't as comfortable to drive and you feel most bumps in the road. Therefore, I would consider the 2012 - 2016 either 1.8L petrol or the 1.6L diesel. I am unsure of the 2.2L diesel on fuel consumption and I feel that the 1.4L petrol just would't have enough power. I am unsure of what these cars are like in automatic transmission, however, I have also not heard a great deal about the transmission being an issue... Here in the UK an automatic is hard to come by. I hope this review has been helpful.

I have the same car. I got it from my grandpa for only $6,400 which was less than half it’s value. Even used Honda’s tend to be a little pricey compared to a Ford or Hyundai or Nissan of the same year. Only 10,700 miles when I got it in September and I’m already at 32,800 miles lol. I noticed you got the same average 28.2 mpg as mine too. I have a heavy foot and I rarely drive with Econ mode turned on since it makes the car hella slow. Plus I heard that “average mpg” is just average so I probably get more than 28.2 lol. Zero problems with this car so far except for my grandpa and my friends getting trapped in the passenger seat since the seatbelt sometimes refuses to unbuckle. Only thing that bothers me about the car is the placement of that back up camera screen. I wasn’t so lucky with my last 3 cars. None of them lasted more than 5 months but none of them were Honda’s either 🤷🏻‍♂️.

Wait a minute... Did you replace the tensioner because it rattled on acceleration? Super common on these civics to do that, but that should have been the drive belt alone. The tensioners on these do not have much play, and when the drive belt stretches due to age, the tensioner has extended to its limit and starts rattling. I replaced someone else's 13 civic tensioner without the belt, and it came right back in still rattling. Got called a dumbass by my master tech, then he told me when that happens, only change the drive belt lmao.

Also the car is on 56k mileage and sometimes it is struggling to shift from 1st to 2nd gear and also especially Neutral to Reverse. Just a 2020 update for people that read the comments: Below Mr. Real Steel sez he lost the car to a tree falling on it 10 months ago, and also, "just changed the oil" is a euphemism (for him) for changing all fluids- brake, coolant, trans - and belts. My 2012 Civic EX-L had a shocking amount of problems around the 100,000 mile mark - the paint was fading, the transmission fluid had metal shavings in it (and felt like it was ready to grenade at any moment), the car bucked and jerked badly on gear shifts, the hesitation from a stop was horrible, there was a strange gurgling/buzzing sound when I pressed the accelerator pedal, and it ate through batteries and tires constantly. I had to get pawn it off at a dealer at a mere 104,000 miles in order to get SOME money back before the time bomb of a transmission blew. I bought that car in 2015 at 39,600 miles with the hopes that it would get to at least 200,000 miles without any issues or expensive repairs. First, thanks for checking out the video! Yes my 13' civic was super reliable. I would buy that car with 100k miles in a heart beat!! Unfortunately mine was totaled when a tree fell on it but I'm highly considering another

Real Steel Cars I live in South Georgia. Weather will rust those in no time. It’s just not finished enough , so if it’s parked outside for few years it will rust. Very easy fix as you’d think. So no biggie.

i have the 2013, the chinsy hub caps paint peeling and wheels rusting...winters in Philadelphia no doubt the cause...currently 36k miles...otherwise no problems... still original brakes,,just oil & transmission drain and fills @ 25k

Great car I got my self a 2013 with 25k Miles, before that I have had 8th Accord 2.4 with full leather interior I sold it because I wanted something smarter for wallet being 20y.o. You can't compare isolation and driving long routes. But I am trying to fall in love with Civic after Accord has been sold. Solid Cars they seem both. We will see it. I drove Civic 125mp/h since I live in Germany. Not a good idea.. hahaha. Nice video I hope you are hitting 300k+ with it.
