I'll take either one. I have been a loyal Honda customer for 10 plus years, and I'll have no issues owning a Toyota. I still want Honda and Toyota to make one model car together. Honda can do the engine, Toyota can do the transmission, and they both can do the body style and accessories etc...

You think that the Civic and Corolla have equivalent levels of interior/driving ergonomics? Gonna disagree if so, and that's a huge point for long term ownership. Honda transmissions are vastly superior, both CVT and Manual. Haven't driven a tq converter auto of either since the 90's, and auto's were all dog doo doo back then anyway.

That's good to know as a new owner of an 09 with 87k. A lot of the issues it has are not exclusive to it, and being a redesign year it's going to have its quirks. Once the recalls and concerns are taken care of it should be plenty reliable especially if you have the 1.8L engine.

I bought my 2004 Corolla at 160k miles, and I'll admit, I've abused the hell out of that car. I've not always had the money needed to keep up with the repairs, and I finally start earning some decent money and it gave out on me. It just passed 250k miles and I'm needing to replace the engine due to rod knock. And the funny thing is that it's been so reliable the past five years I've owned it, even when I've not put in the time and effort into maintaining it, that I'm probably going to end up putting another engine in it. It's gotten me through several road trips and is surprisingly fun to drive. If I do end up doing the engine swap, I'm going to maintain it to see just how long I can keep it going, even if it means spending another 5+ years with this car!

@@jmfn6092 well, I did the engine swap. Got an engine from Japan with only 60k miles on it. The shop who did the swap did a good job replacing the engine, but a bad job making sure they didn't destroy any wiring when they did it. So now I have a perfectly running engine but electrical issues. The wiring to the speed sensor must've broken somehow, because I no longer have a working instrument cluster. Currently trying to find a shop that specializes in electrical where I live because all the swap shop did is replace the speed sensor and that didn't do anything to fix the issue.

But for some reason, my automatic transmission would only fit a speed sensor for a manual transmission. The mechanic that figured it out tried one for an automatic and realized it didn't sit right, so he tried one for a manual and its been working ever since. No clue why it worked, but it did.

The first car I bought was a 2005 Honda Civic LX, which I bought new. Lasted me for over 16 years and put almost 207,000 miles on it. Issues I had was a bad alternator and starter. Replaced my brakes twice. No problem with the AC. I probably could’ve driven it for another year or so but the head gasket went bad and the cost to fix it wasn’t with it. Before I got my Honda I was planning on getting a Toyota Corolla. In January 2021, I ended up buying a 2021 Toyota C-HR as I got a better deal than 2021 Honda C-RV. I will always have a soft spot for my Honda Civic. Both great car companies!

I owned a 2005 Corolla Sport Manual. It was insane how reliable it was, especially compared to the American cars I grew up with. The Takata airbag recall was a major pain though. They notified me that because of the danger, no one should ride in the passenger seat until the replacement became available (15 Months later). In the meantime, I had to drive three kids to school and stuff them all in the back seat. At 6 am 🤨

I have had no major problems with my 2011 Toyota Corolla which I bought new in 2011 and now has over 130,000 miles on it. There was at one time a recall of the steering wheel air bag which was made by Takata. That was a minor inconvenience, but it was worrisome for a while to be driving around with an airbag that could explode and send metal fragments into my face. The only negative thing about this model year is that the mileage has not been great. On the interstate, I get mileage in the low to mid-30s per gallon, but that drops to around 25 in city driving with lots of short trips of under 5 miles.

My wife really likes her new 2020 Civic sport sedan 2.0l 6speed manual 😎 She still has her 2005 civic special edition ex but wants to drive it only in the winter so her new car doesn't start to rust anywhere because Central Wis loves the Salt- Calcium chloride for melting Ice 🤔

The 2.0 naturally aspirated motor and 6 speed manual transmission is definitely the most reliable way to buy a Civic. You two bought the right one 👍🏻

A good oil undercoat will go a long way to protect from rust. I live in NH and use a product known as NHOU (New Hampshire Oil Undercoat). Like any other product, people will argue to no end which is best. I’ve used the clear formula on a new F-150 before it ever saw salt and treated every year. It gets sprayed inside the panels and frame as well as coating everything else underneath. Years later, the difference is clear when compared to similar models were were obviously never treated and exposed to winter salts. If it’s an older vehicle, it will still help, but not as much since any rust that has already started will continue to cause damage, but a thorough undercoat will slow it down considerably. The shop here is reputable and will do the inside/outside treatment for about $200 if you can’t do it yourself, but the cost compared with repairing the frame or body is much more. Once a year is typically all you need, usually the fall is a good time for that.

Gen7 civic - my first and current car. Amazing gearbox, comfort, space, and mpg (for the time period). Amazingly realiable I still see a lot of them o the streets and mechanics all say they love it. Will be very hard to eventually swap it for a new car I really love that thing. It's gentle when it you want it to be gentle, nd agressive when you want it to be agressive. Great car

I’ve owned both & favor the Toyota hands down. My Toyota’s have never spent a day in the shop. My Hondas’s have very expensive repairs (transmissions, a/c, power steering pumps etc.) & the paint didn’t hold up. I will be a Toyota customer for the rest of my life.

Just got the base model 2024 Toyota Corolla LE. Brand spanking new with 4 miles on the ODO. Starts up with a key and drives like a dream. 30+ miles per gallon is insane! I plan on keeping this vehicle for 10+ years if it will let me. I plan on 5k oil changes (despite the dealer recommending 10k). I’ve never been more proud of a purchase. I know Scotty would be proud too 😂

Honorable mention for the 2001-2006 civic, not the auto but the 5 speed models. Thing is a tank. Had it for 16 years and the most damage at the shop I've done have been a new alternator around 100k and a new radiator at 200k. 226k now and going strong.

I'm still driving my 2002 Honda Civic EX Coup (Manual). I only have about 170k miles on it. For the most part it has been reliable. The biggest problems I've had with it is I've had to replace the entire exhaust (different parts over the years) and the ac. There were numerous air bag recalls on it, though. I never personally had an issue with the air bags. Then again, I never had collision where they went off. I just took it in when there was a recall. It's paid for and I'll probably drive it until it dies. I do, however, get new car envy when I see the 2022 civic si and the new acura integra.
