Fellow painter here... I use almost only Blue Frog tape and orange frog tape on everything... I like the fact that I can leave the orange frog tape up on windows that are directly in the Sun forever and the glue never melts or leaves a residue.. which I never did but I did want to see how long it could go... I've never really had good results with the yellow frog tape or green because there's just not enough adhesion with a lot of the surfaces we deal with that are either dirty or have Grease. One of the last Interiors I did I masked around a bunch of crown to spray spray the crown molding using the yellow tape and all of it came down the next day and I had to remask everything and considering the yellow frog tape was like almost $9 a roll I was super pissed

Ive told my superintendent to use frog tape but the cheap bastard buys the cheapest blue tape

It actually saves money long term, especially if you buy it in bulk. Less labor from touch ups via bleed through and a higher quality job!

I'm gonna be the Debbie Downer here (BOO) regarding technique. I think that testing these on a textured wall was unfair to all the tapes due to the fact that there is no possibility of consistency of texture depth, width and closeness of ridges between samples. Anyone who is going to paint some type of striping on a textured wall is just looking for a migraine, especially with high contrast colors. I saw and you commented that you put equal pressure on tapes, but unless you went in with a putty knife and secured tape to every low spot before a ridge, there will always be a gap for paint to weep under. I realize that in some areas knockdown texture is the thing, but east coast has lots and lots of of smooth drywall. Also have to take into account the nature of the substrate...unprimed, primed, painted, woods of various types, plastic, metal, tile. There are just too many variables in this area to say that one is better than another. Except for the Scotch 2020. I believe, IMHO, that's good for securing packages that are going into the freezer😁. I'll keep watching and see how it goes. Feel free to flame away.

I agree with you and can attest to the inability to "properly" test on a textured surface. Even if I were to test on a surface where all conditions were constant and ideal for each tape, who's to say that the pressure applied to each of the tapes were constant during the process. Or vice versa. It's easy to get deep into the woods on this one. That being said, given that I tried to keep all variables the same, I would really on the fact that statistically the frog tape won out. I get it though!!!

Once painted an office and used green frog tape and the paint peeled right off when I pulled the tape off, but I think who ever painted before I did used the industrial paint that had no primer. I still love frog tape . The blue scotch I have used and when pulled off paint bleed and sometimes very hard to remove. So yeah , my money is on frog tape. Keep an eye out sometimes it goes on sale and is cheaper than the scotch blue , oh and do not let the paint dry before removing tape the blue tape sometimes will tear when removing , so paint then remove tape.

Yeah, that's what's good about the Frog Tape. It's strong and has a medium adhesive with paint block polymers that swells on contact to prevent bleed through. The painters blue has a tendency to splinter when pulling it, even off the roll. I get a Great deal on the 🐸 tape!!!!

Nice video. I hardly ever use tape when painting. I would rather cut in by hand and I hate to paint. However I will say when polishing a car I only use Frog Green and Frog Yellow because both tapes do not leave a lot of adhesive on the surface. Feel you surface under painters blue and you will understand.

A super-absorbent polymer that reacts with latex paint and instantly gels to form a micro-barrier that seals the edges of the tape to prevent paint bleed and deliver very sharp paint lines.

Great video! Agree that frog tape is the best. Interesting that Shurtape CP 199 by far looked the worse!

I thought the Shurtape would do better also. It's still a great production tape for the price. Peels without splintering, has decent adhesion and works well for smooth surfaces. It's like a stronger version of 3m 2020.
