Is Final Bout really that Bad? | Dragon Ball GT Final Bout (PS1) Review

Ойындар

In 1997 Dragonball GT Final Bout was released in Japan and North America and later in 2002 in Europe.
Sadly it is remembered as a terrible game, but let's see what we can find out.

Thanks for this detailed video. I kind of liked this game back in 1999. I played it again this year and surprisingly I liked it again ! Especially the build up mode. I didn't remember how good the musics were, but also the strike sounds and energy blast sounds. The ki-charge sound too. As you say in the video the sound is overall very good. Unfortunately combat mechanism has some big problems. It is possible to harass an enemy and with a good timing he can't do anything because of his recovery time ! Flying everywhere at will is good, but without automatic aim, the aerial fight is very difficult, and I only use ground fighting as a result. The characters are 3D and quite good visually. It is a huge improvement from previous games. Ki charge lights are pleasant and are a true improvement too. Watching these characters doing their combos is pretty nice. Ki blasts are better than any previous dbz game. I freaking like Vegeta and Kid Buu's self explosions in every way. There are less characters than ever. Officially 17, 18 with Baby, but some characters are almost the same. Normal version and super saiyan version can't be counted as two characters for me. I guess the 3D modelling was incomparably more difficult than using the old 2D sprites from previous games. Downgrading from 27 characters to so few must have been a disappointment back then. Fighting a giant boss at the end of the game is very good and stylish. He's still a symbol of this game as well as the hidden Super Saiyan 4 Goku. I was so enthousiastic when I discovered this character back then. In 1999 DBGT was so little known in Europe and I didn't know Baby or Super Saiyan 4. I think Final Bout was the difficult but needed step to go from 2D old dbz games to Budokai. I play UB22 when I want to play characters who aren't in Final Bout, but I prefer Final Bout otherwise. There was a lot of technical work on this game unfortunately some errors in maniability and a decrease in the number of characters made it a big disappointment for some people.

I love seeing your Thomas videos. But I’m such a huge fan of dragon ball so seeing you cover dragon ball as well is really awesome!

Dragonball Z replaced Thomas growing up so I am very passionate about that (more so) and early anime distribution in the 90s and 2000s uk wise.

Great Review! Though I have a few notes to mention. In regards to criticism of the game by some mainstream outlets, I really think it comes down to comparing it to other more mainstream games like Tekken, Virtua Fighter, Street Fighter, etc... I do not recall if the wireframe is training only, but you can definitely select alternate costumes. As for difficulty for firing an energy blast during the "COUNTER" I suggest inputting it repeteadly if you have a hard time, it does register it, or being prepared on what to press right as it comes up. You can pause and unpause for practice. Also for characters to play as a beginner, for me Trunks is my recommendation. His combos are the easiest consistently to input, and he was my main I used to learn the game. As for fighting child characters, you pretty much have to take the fight into the air with them, or resort to using energy blasts/Meteor attacks. In regards to Baby, an advice I have is to use energy blasts, to put him down. Then charge back up, move below him and repeat. Keep your distance and stuck to the ground, until you need to fire off a blast. Also, I highly suggest delving into Meteor combos and Build Up mode. The latter is easily the game's most replayable aspect, and is why I still play it to this day. Lastly, in regards to the other DB games at the time. I could not get into UB22, due to the ridiculously strict timing input required to input combos here (compared to how much more relaxed it is here). But I definitely think The Legend is a fun game once you get the hang of it, and it's probably the easiest of the three to learn. Although Final Bout definitely has more replayability going for it.

I remember this game my friend hyped it he spent I think like 150 bucks on the English translation on eBay back in the 2000s. I couldn’t get my hands on an English translation so I took my PlayStation to a Japanese mod shop and they put a mod ship in it and I bought the game Little did I know my PlayStation was stolen from me in college but I kept the game I’m still salty from it

This was a pretty great video! Thanks, algorithm! I think this game suffered a lot from weird release timing in the west along with strange design decisions. Subscribed and definitely keeping an eye out for more :)

nothing was better than landing 3 meteor rush combos and ending with a super. i really love the character models in this game because they look like action figures.

Final bout was trash but like a special kind of trash, that my uncles put me onto at an early age. That intro with the hype and then doing the cheat codes and picking ss4 it was all just goofy fun

I feel like this is a bad game but since it was a DB fighting game right as it was catching fire in America a lot of people actually played it and have fond memories of it.

Nothing brings back this game's memories for me more than using the wasted slot character pressing ↓ Punch and follow it with ↓→ Punch over and over again for insta win. Top Tier gameplay that was for real.

There is an easy way to beat this game, because some characters have infinites, cell for example has a slide kick that can be spammed, vegeta has one too

Anyone else used to usd the site cheatCC? 🤣👌 good times. I used to print off cheat codes at school in I.C.T and claim it was homework 👀 got caught a few times just paid the 5p per print! Very hard game but used to just replay that fire intro over again. 🔥 the manual is filled with bad English translations always bothered me!

In 1997 Tekken 2 had stronger engineering and cleaner mechanics. When Tekken 3 came out in 1999 this game became irrelevant. Meteor mode was my favorite about this game. I was also thrilled about the Final message during the finishing move. I remember even learning how to play with a Super Baby and the wireframe models. The only thing I was longing for as a kid playing this was the movie clips ultimate battle 22 had. Great bad game lol.

Ultimate Battle 27 osbetter than Final Bout, but both games are still 2 of the best games out of all the DBZ games made thus far💯👍

The reason why Final Bout is poorly received has a lot to do with it being based on Butoden games. The Butoden Game Mechanics are very choppy&slow, its reminiscent of the original Street Fighter. Even the Extreme Butoden Game made for 3ds looks very dated compared to Budokai 1's fast paced action.

This game was shit. Worst dragon ball game I have ever played. I played it for many weeks anyways, back then. It was a simple time where you tried to get the most out of what you got. This was some love-hate realationship I had with this game.
