    By Collapsing Universe, they mean the Universe is moving back toward its origin point, thus making it possible to travel to other Galaxies, which should also give you an idea of just how far along the Collapse is.

    Quick corrections: The "Starting Bonus" only applies if your character has net negative attributes, which is a nice and simple way to balance out a set of crummy rolls. Also, the "way you died" list is, according to the description, a flash of the way you were *supposed* to die, and whatever actually killed your character wasn't their intended fate. Makes a lot more sense why they are so situational.

    Currently running Welcome to the Ring! and we're having a good time so far. A little different to get into since it's mostly social encounters, but a great introduction to the setting. Initiative rocks. We did a non-phys combat simulation to get the players accustomed to it, and it really shines in play.

    Correct me if I'm wrong, but the table at pg 55 is for the "the way they were MEANT to die" (pg 54). Like, the death in the game was a mishappening of fate or some sort.

    I definitely agree that the hub concept is awesome, and along with the art is probably my favorite part of this game (what I know being mostly from reviews/reddit). I'd love to play this. I like that it's sort of minimal and simple for several reasons-one of which is it makes it less time consuming to learn which is great if you have a bunch of games you'd like to try but limited time, and it's easier to get newbies into it.

    This game is so damned good. I'm not normally a huge fan of minimalistic OSRs like Mork Borg (although I did buy that one for the art cause, I mean, come on), but Death in Space just manages to hit all the buttons of what a good sci-fi game should look like. It has everything, but all of it streamlined to fit into just 130 digest sized pages. Great bang for the buck!

    Quick tip for folks wanting to print pages from the electronic version of the game book: You can invert the colours for easier printing in most graphics apps fairly easily. For example, in Photoshop, you'd do the following: Open the page you want to print Navigate to 'Image' on the top toolbar Navigate to 'Adjustments' in the drop down menu Navigate and click on 'Invert.' Job done! Most graphics apps with similar functionality to Photoshop will have a similar option to quickly reverse the colours. It may just take a bit of finding.

  • @PeterKoperdan

    @PeterKoperdan

    2 жыл бұрын

    Yeah... the problem is that the file is a PDF which combines various objects (colored surfaces, text and images) onto a page. The pages are not single bitmap images that you can simply invert. What you suggest would require first rendering each page as a bitmap image, then inverting those images and finally printing the result.

  • @hdestotallyunoriginalgamin3555

    @hdestotallyunoriginalgamin3555

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@PeterKoperdan - should actually be fairly easy to do with Photoshop's functionality. If you're smart about it, you can automate a process to render the page within the 'Actions' tab. That way, the tedious stuff is done with a single mouse click.

  • @PeterKoperdan

    @PeterKoperdan

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@hdestotallyunoriginalgamin3555 Indeed, there are things that can be done. Some of them not too difficult. But my point was that it's not as easy as you make it sound. If you are good in Photoshop, it's not difficult. If you aren't, it's not straightforward at all. The video also mentions that the background blacks in the PDF aren't actually black but dark gray. When inverted (as a bitmap of course) they would become light gray - not great for print. It can be fixed of course, but these kind of manipulations require some graphics/Photoshop knowledge. "Open the page ... click on 'Invert.' ... Job done!" is not happening bro ;-)

    @@DaveThaumavore Also, since Televerket (the telephone utilites) where privitaized in the early 90's, the logo looking so simillar gives real 80's vibes. The setting sounds like a combination of Stargrave and some grimdark for flavor. I bet you could really amp up the presentation if you fancied playing your RPGs with minis and terrain by using some funky kitbashed minis in a Blanchitsu style. Not really into using minis when I run an RPG (my games are usually to open ended so I'd need a ton of terrain), but I could see some people doing it with this setting. Plus the art just makes me want to paint up some dark, sci-fi minis and cobble together a wreck of a ship.

  • @godfreemorals

    @godfreemorals

    2 жыл бұрын

    Depends how you want to go with it I expect. Looking at that 'reputation is the new law' section in the setting introduction, it seems like it's just serving as a theme description, that is, it gives the characters motivation for their actions. Why are the PCs doing this? Well, because that's what we do in the Tenebris system, we go after bigger and more dangerous contracts to make our name. Personally I think it's that rather than any need for a specific mechanical renown statistic or similar, but you could always borrow and convert reputation rules from other ttrpgs as a way of deciding on the level of contracts available to the group.

How suitable is Death in Space to a continuous campaign rather than a one-shot that horror survival games tend to be? Thanks very much in advance!

    1. I will withhold comparison with MS because I haven’t read 1e yet and I’m waiting for those rules to be finalized. In comparison to Alien, this game is much simpler and the setting is way more open and loose. DiS is simply a more casual game from a rules perspective, and the dark cosmic powers are way different than the gritty realism of the Alien setting. 2. DiS is a one- to three-shot kind of game. But with one caveat: your ship. A spaceship or base can stretch across many sessions and PCs, and end up embodying a pretty interesting story in itself.

    @@DaveThaumavore Thank you for the quick response! I definitely like the idea of the spaceship being passed on from party to party (or their descendants/replacements). The Initiative Order in this game is very similar to the FATE RPG. That system is a "generic" system, using four 6-sided dice that have either a plus, a minus or a blank... which is actually not relevant... so I don't know why I even bothered bringing up the odd dice. Sorry. Moving on.

    Feel like this IS relevant because I’m going to run this soon and was going to use 3 fate die to determine stats rather than the two d4s. I think it’s a lot easier to look at quickly and know your total stat! With 3 fate die vs 2d4 you end up with the max of +3 and min of -3 so works exactly the same so I’m excited to try it and think it’ll make stats quicker and easier to roll up so if characters die quick they can jump right back in. You could also do 4 drop the lowest of you wanna give them an extra little bit!
