As a guitarist myself for nearly 50 years I have always admired David Gilmour's expression through his playing. It's an eye-closing, transcendental journey through a sonic landscape. I remember in my teens, reading some guitar magazine where in the interview Dave was asked if he could play " really fast ". His response, " I suppose if you sped up the tape" has stuck with me all these years. That interviewer had no clue really. David Gilmour is beyond comparison and tops my list.

Listen, I'm a guitarist, and I know from experience that if you are feeling moved by playing, in your heart and soul and all the way down to your feet. The audience is going to feel it, too. David Gilmore has the technique and skill that when he plays from his heart, which he does so well, it will penetrate you just the same - if you're paying attention! I went into a solo once, and from the first notes, the audience let out a collective sound and literally stood up higher and reached for the ceiling! That was phenomenal. The power of music 🎶 to move us, because we are made from the same vibrations. 🎉 Pink Floyd and David Gilmore rule! 🎸 🎹 🥁

Definitely NOT over-rated ! It took courage and supreme confidence in himself, to finger his fretboard, with such haunting and goosebump raising, solos, even in the company of other great contemporary, guitar virtuosos. His style, defied speed and " showy" exagerated, flamboyance, which was the forte of his iconic, contemporaries at the time. But David Gilmour, held his own majestically! An unhurried, and a singularly distinct, signature style. One only had to cast a gaze at his face,to see the concentrated passion etched there. The pursed lips, and rock set jaw of studied determination. And the intense gaze, at his fretboard,as he,crafted, the poignant haunting strains,on his instrument. One word ! LEGEND !

David's great talent is not doing solos with millions of notes in one bar, abusing speed and exibition. What makes David one of the greatest of all time is the use of his technique to convey feeling through melodies that touch the soul. He is a master of sensitivity, viscerality, musical beauty and the feeling transmitted in the form of sound. For me, Comfortably Numb's solo is the most beautiful ever played. Every note choice had purpose no crowd pleasing lightning runs or random moments. pure soul in every single note played. As far as I know he doesn’t have a catchy riff to his name he had a much deeper sense of playing and understanding of his craft. Catchy is quick to like and quick to get bored of, his playing truly is timeless.

Gilmour never tried to shred. But he had touch and expression unparalleled amongst rock guitarists. He also had diverse skills: fingerpicking, slide, lap steel and pedal steel, acoustic 6- and 12-string were all areas where he was strong and an expressive player. Only a handful (e.g. Page, Howe) can say similarly. Both could play much faster than Gilmour but could come nowhere near to his expressivity.

He also made up his own understanding of tuning for the creation of the chorus melody for Comfortably Numb. It was meant to be high strung guitar but he got it wrong and liked the results better and used it!

David is the GOAT of his hard to define genre. He didn't box himself into melodic scales, but broke rules, and went for FEEL. He was/is absolutely innovative, like Hendrix, and now we just accept it because his music is so ubiquitous. Every member of PF was standout gifted, but without Dave, WHO could have stood in his place ? Nobody. His style is absolutely unique.
