Is Darcy *Actually* Rich? Regency Era Economics In Pride and Prejudice

[Subtitulada en español] Mr Darcy from Pride and Prejudice is famous for being rich. But just how rich is he? Is he actually that impressive or is he just sort of middle class fancy? In this video, I put Mr. Darcy into the financial context of the Regency era and show exactly what sort of financial position Jane Austen painted him in.

    I always assumed the reason darcy did not have a title stems from family pride. If I am correct Henry the 8th had been the one to remove the titles from house darcy due to them letting the rebels of pigrimageof faith through. ( thought to be done out of kindness) If that is the case, and I am no expert, then mr darcy not having a title but having a lords wealth and status would match up with reality as if I am not incorrect during that time a darcy uncle had a title. My pride thesis comes from the fact that many darcy's were said to be offered thier title back after henry removed it but refused on principle. Therefore he would in principle be eligible by wealth, connection and blood to get a special license. It would alsoexplain how an earl's daughter would be allowed to marry a mare gentleman in George Darcy when her sister was able to marry the supposed wealthy and titled sir louis de bourge.

    It’s really interesting that you would mention that your biggest sources for Darcy’s finances would be Mrs. Bennet and Mr. Collins. Talking about someone’s money is…. Socially unacceptable? It is tacky, and these two, while well meaning, are very tacky. So, maybe Jane wanted to make a point how comfortable Mr. Darcy was, but it couldn’t have been brought up by Mr. Bennet or someone who has more manners. It had to be through socially ridiculous people.

    @@Vincenza8907 How you reasoned your statement comes off... not quite right or coherent. I would like for you to explain what you meant about her using the statements to identify the wealth of mr darcy as ridiculous. For one: all of this discussion is hypothetical and her discussing a characters"s supposed wealth should never be seen as tacky since it is not even relating to real situations. If that is what you meant by tacky that is. Second: Austens use of these seemingly ridiculous characters to inform the reader of the darcy wealth and even bingley's income is playing the part of not only assisting the reader togain insight into the motives of the persons and darcy as it relates to his wealth and status but also relate facts in a way that was not meant to come off as just throwing out facts. Yes in the time period this would have been truly poor manners but for me it shows a level calculating intelligence in mrs. Bennet and mr collins which is oft ignored by others due to the former manners rather than used to evaluate thier person on a deeper level.

    @@ashlaibrown5453 I did not say that us talking about a fictional characters wealth was tacky. It would be moronic to deduce that from what I said. What I meant was Jane Austen, the author, wanted to get across that Mr. Darcy was wealthy and to even be specific about his finances (again not say Jane Austen is tacky.) I think she wanted to convey that Mr. Darcy was in a social class far above the Bennett’s and even the Bingley’s. It would be seen as low class for respectable people in society to talk about Darcy’s wealth. So, how could Jane get specific about Darcy’s finances without just saying it in the narration. In the context of the book, it would have had to have come from characters who unknowingly commit quite a few social faux pas.

    It wasn't just the money that made him illustrious. He was the eldest son of the daughter of an Earl, and he was the nephew of an Earl. In terms of British society, that's more important than money, because even without the money, it would give you access to a level of society, and all the attendant privileges (and credit) that lesser people wouldn't get. It's partially true even today.

    to the point that as far as I know it was historically accurate in Europe for poor noble families to marry kid with rich not-noble family. F.e. in m country (which is not really England tbh) some nobles (especially in some regions) were literally poor but they still had titles and most importantly: with title each of them had vote equal to any other noble (which was important as nobles were kind of deciding about most of important stuff including electing new king, getting involved in war, etc.). So even if noble was really poor and some merchants were much more rich they merchant could want to marry daughter with even poor noble as his grandsons would be part of most influential social group in country. Lvl of it? Merchant: could buy expensive coat or sth, could't carry saber, could't decide much Any noble: could carry saber if had money, not only had equal vote on any voting during Sejmiki and Sejm (yes, that's official name according to Wikipedia, somehow they aren't translated into Parliament) but could actually end any voting instantly no matter ratio of votes using liberum veto, highly criticized law of any noble to do so. Of course nobles weren't deciding about much as it would require to bother them multiple times per year and they didn't have fast trains to travel whole country in one day, but still

    One reason that Darcy fell in love with Elizabeth was because he had to earn her love, not with his money, but by demonstrating his good character. Therefore he could be sure when he won her in the end that she loved him for himself and not for his money. This inspired his affection in addition to the qualities he admired in her - her intelligence, her spirit, and her own good character. I don't include her beauty because as he initially dubbed her "barely tolerable" and it was universally proclaimed that Jane was the great beauty of the Bennett family, he only came to think her beautiful as he came to know her inner beauty. I'm not suggesting that Elizabeth was not good-looking but that Darcy, unlike Elizabeth's own father, would not have been captured by mere physical charms. No matter how beautiful she was, Darcy would not have loved her simply for that. Whereas Mr. Bennett married Mrs. Bennett to his regret based only upon her looks without getting to know the person within.

    I somewhat disagree. He fell in love with her not because he had to earn her love. He fell for her even before he did that (a point well made by the previous commenter, Jonathan Parks). I believe that he fell for her because she was one of the few who didn't pursue him because of his wealth. One on hand we could say that it shows her good character - she wants a good person and doesn't care if he is rich, but on the other hand... she changed her mind about Mr. Darcy precisely when she actually saw his wealth. Not before. (Before she only knew about it, but knowing and actually seeing are two different things). Not to mention that I never thought of her to be someone with a good character. She is too stubborn. She thinks so highly of herself that she looks down on almost everyone around her. Her treatment of Lydia was awful; and Lydia is only 15 and in serious need of guidance. She trashed Mr. Darcy to everyone who could listen after Wickham told her his lies. Even if it were true, what right did she have to trash him to others?

The British East India company alone was bringing in a lot of riches from India, Southern Asia and Africa. The British empire at the time was at the height of all colonial powers and probably one of the richest empires of the world. Also, at the time, a lot of the nobility, seeing the riches coming from the East, started investing in companies like the East India Company. And considering that Darcy was a rich and intelligent man, he would probably have investments like those. And income from those investments probably exceeded his estate income. Lady Catherine makes all these claims about how Anne hasn't made her debut in London because she is "sickly" but I bet if Anne was out in society, all her potential suitors would be put off by their prospective mother-in-law. It wouldn't surprise me if the supposed engagement started off years earlier, with some innocent comment from Darcy's mother about how nice it would be if the two infants married one day, and (in Lady Catherine's mind) that became an engagement. Realisticallly, a woman of Anne de Bourgh's age then would probably have been married a few years with a couple of children; it's interesting to compare the way that Charlotte Lucas' brothers think she is an "old maid" at 27, because she is probably more or less the same age as Anne. So maybe that side of it was starting to irritate Lady Catherine, too?

    It's also all relative. Beyond the fact that they'll lose most of their income once Mr Bennett dies, the social expectations of their place in society requires quite significant expenditure on clothes, makeup, hospitality, entertainment, servants, etc. It's like a rich family who send their kids to private school and spend most of their income on high school fees. Yes they have an awful lot of money, and could definitely survive on an awful lot less, but in practice their income might barely exceed the expenditure which they feel is non negotiable as a member of their class.

    @Jonathan Parks even though his father was "only" a very wealthy gentleman, being the female-line grandson of an earl would have boosted his standing (among other wealthy land owning gentleman at least). Titles were only the preview of the eldest sons of peers, but their siblings would still have had some of the advantage of being a member of that family (unless of course they did something scandalous and ruined their reputations). Yes, the daughters and sisters of earls, marquises and dukes were addressed as Lady such-and-such by courtesy, it wasn't the same as holding the title in your own right.

  • @edennis8578

    @edennis8578

    @Jonathan Parks I've always thought that Lady Catherine's objections stemmed from the fact that she always intended her daughter to marry Darcy, and Elizabeth was ruining her dream. Also, Lydia was a known trollope (the kiss of death in those days) and her husband, Wickham, had ruined his reputation (rightly so) even without his attempted seduction of Darcy's sister. He was a womanizer and a huge gambler who ran out on his debts. Imagine if Darcy wanted to marry a highwayman's sister. It would've been about as hair-raising for someone of their elite status.

  • @edennis8578

    @edennis8578

    3 жыл бұрын

    @Jonathan Parks Also I totally disagree with your assumption that Darcy's antecedents and close relatives did nothing for his social status. One of the things that lowered the Bennet girls' value in the marriage market was their low family connections. They had uncles who (gasp) worked for a living. Bingley and his sisters had a lower status because their father earned his money, not inherited it; that's why Bingley's sister only married a man with a title but no money. She didn't have the status to marry better. A gentleman wasn't just a gentleman. There was (and is) an entire spectrum from the lowest rung (Elizabeth's father) to Darcy, super rich and the descendant of nobility. Not just aristocrats, but nobles. Darcy and Mr. Bennett could be said to be in the same class, but just barely. You may not realize how segmented English society was and is. A maid is lower than a footman. A footman is lower than a butler. They're all servants, but they observe a strict heirarchy. A woman who runs a bed and breakfast will usually not make beds or mow the lawn, but hire it done because those jobs are beneath her. In fact, I stayed at a very small bed and breakfast in Kent where the owner worked as a secretary so that she could hire maids and a gardener to do the menial tasks at her establishment. You think like an American.

    Without the special license, banns had to be called for several weeks in the parish. Basically announcing the upcoming wedding and asking if anyone had a problem with it. Weddings could only be in the church and on certain days and times. With the license many of these restrictions were eliminated. They could be married immediately, at home, any day of the week.

    Elizabeth literally refused to marry Darcy and in a way that he could not misinterpret as a game (see the words of Mr Collins when she rejects his proposal, again telling the base truths). In the story, that abject refusal kicked his love for her up into a realm he didn't know existed and triggered behavior that he would never previously have contemplated. This is the story of a man who has never been able to both trust and admire those around him. For the first time, he has found a person whom he both finds attractive and whom he can trust implicitly. And Darcy actually admires the reasons that Elizabeth gives for rejecting him. Austen constructed the narrative from his perspective, from the perspective of a very rich man.

  • @amandacalling

    I’m not sure Darcy thought her indifferent to him (look at how shocked he was at her initial rejection of him), so I think he was attracted to her because she didn’t fawn all over him, she didn’t mindlessly agree with everything he said in an obvious attempt to gain his approval (see Caroline Bingley who was probably a good example of what he was used to from other women). She challenged him, debated with him, and that’s what he he liked.

    Another way of measuring Darcy's wealth. In this period, a ship of the line, basically a battleship, cost about 50,000 pounds. His annual income is one-fifth of the cost of a major warship. Also, Darcy's mother was the daughter of a high peer (earl, marquis, duke). She was Lady Catherine the Bourgh's sister. Since Lady Catherine is using a courtesy title (Otherwise she would have been Catherine, Lady de Bourgh) and only the children of high peers can use a courtesy title, we know her family's rank.

    Only one thing gives me pause about Mr. Darcy's wealth: that white elephant of a house. It is enormous with sculpted grounds and idle woods for miles before you even get to it. The upkeep alone plus the taxes on all those windows and land! Then, Darcy puts that ten thousand pound settlement plus debts on Wickham. That must have sent him back quite a bit. As for Darcy falling in love with Elizabeth, it happens in stages. He is intrigued by her at the initial ball, but really starts falling with her conversation and her walking to Netherfield's effect on her eyes. They dance at Netherfield and her conversation intrigues him more. At Rosings, they are placed together enough for him to transform from attracted to deep affection. Her turning him down does not diminish his love for her, only pushing him beyond his reserve to demonstrate his true character to her. It is not just the rescue of her and her family, but that he wanted it done anonymously, without credit. Only his rectification of Bingley's inclination towards Jane was immediately obvious. In short, not one thing, and not all at once.

    Great video! As to your question of what made Darcy fall for Elizabeth, I think that when he really started looking at her, he was struck by her wit and beauty. His first concern was to avoid raising her expectations rather than to worry that she would reject him. At Netherfield in chapter 10, he is already coming under her spell -- although she is not at all trying to seduce him: "Elizabeth, having rather expected to affront him, was amazed at his gallantry; but there was a mixture of sweetness and archness in her manner which made it difficult for her to affront anybody; and Darcy had never been so bewitched by any woman as he was by her. He really believed, that were it not for the inferiority of her connections, he should be in some danger."

    I think her indifference to him was why he was intrigued & chose to propose to her. Like, she was somewhat interesting & would make a better wife than average because at least she was tolerable, in that she wasn't going to just suck up to him because of his money & she would treat him as a person rather than a walking wallet. Then when she turned him down and massively dunked on him (and his character) in the process, I think that's when he actually fell in love because he realized he'd have to make an effort to earn her affections rather than just be gifted them by dint of his sheer wealth & social status.

    Sums of money are critical clues in literature (e.g. a character feeling suicidal over losing the equivalent of $100 suggests the desperation of her situation better than almost anything else, just as someone casually giving it away as a tip implies the opposite), but it's so easy to lose perspective when the author's world is so different (as in Shakespeare, Cervantes, Tolstoy, Austen). This is such a thorough & circumspect analysis. Really appreciate the references in the description.

They are very interesting in the way she analyses a lot of the finer details of Regency society and the various characters in the book. I find them incredibly informative as well as interesting. It has given me a whole new way of looking at the novel and a much greater admiration for Jane Austen not only as a novelist but as a social commentator of great insight. The way she formulates the dialogue of the various characters to show the type of person each one of them is, is a lesson in social psychology in itself. If you decide to try any of her videos I would be very interested to hear your opinion.

    I've always thought of Mr. Darcy as very wealthy, but he's not a peer, so he's probably not as rich as a titled man. After watching the video, I stand corrected. This is very interesting. I think it was clear that Elizabeth got his attention at first because she was unique in that she wasn't trying to get his attention. She didn't like him and was just doing her thing with her crush on Mr. Wickham. After she had gotten his attention, he couldn't help notice how smart she was, how spirited and challenging compared to other ladies of her day. So, yes, she got his attention because she didn't fall all over him and then he saw her great qualities and started thinking she had "fine eyes" and was handsome. But he also didn't realize she couldn't stand him! In the book, it says when he first proposed to her, he thought she was waiting for his addresses! He was so clueless that any woman would not want him! Elizabeth Bennett clearly made Mr. Darcy a better person and even though he was so wealthy, he was the lucky one to have her - a woman who ended up falling in love with him and not his money, a companion who challenged him and made him think differently and finally, a woman who humbled him and kept him from being jaded.

    It’s true mrs. Bennet and mr. Collins were very silly, but I think you’re right that the one subject they can be trusted on is the money and standing of others. Mr. Collins, at his core, is a very vain man who takes great pleasure in associating with people above his station and mrs. Bennet’s entire reason for living as a mother of 5 daughters is to find them eligible marriages. If anyone would know, it would be them. I’d be really interested to hear a bit about Sir Lucas and his social standing. He seems to be on par or richer than the Bennets and (recently) knighted, but he’s looked on with great disdain by the Bingley Ladies, who are rich, surely, but are not landed gentry as Bingley has no estate.

    Just what I was thinking; given that Pride and Prejudice is set round about 1811-ish? and Darcy is 28 or so, he was born c.1783, so obviously he himself may not have been an early investor but his father (born 1750s/1760s?) or grandfather (c.1730, say?) could well have been in a position to invest even a small sum of money into a factory, mill, coal mine etc - Darcy may have owned shares in a venture like that, earning a nice little dividend every year. (Additionally, Derbyshire is quite a "long" county, with the Staffordshire potteries, Wedgwood etc to the west, the Lancashire/Manchester textiles to the north, coal mines dotted all over the Nottinghamshire/Derbyshire region to the east, and then Birmingham etc to the south.) And that's before you get onto the developing canal networks. Potentially, the Darcys were within an easy travelling distance of a lot of lucrative industries; a bit of effort, investment and paperwork when all of this started to take off in the mid-1700s would have been bringing serious benefits two or three generations later - and I reckon the Darcys were bright enough to explore that kind of thing!

    Amazing video!!! It made me think about Mr Bingley as well ... if Darcy was Mr Lauder at $25B, then Bingley was at $12.5B ... Almost middle class right? LOL I actually do not think that Eliza's rebuttal was the key to his attraction ... because when he first proposed he was absolutely convinced she would agree to his suit. He was flabbergasted that she not only denied him but gave him little reasons for it. So clearly he wasn't particularly aware that she wasn't attracted to him. But I believe that during the time leading to his first proposal, he spent a lot of time observing her, and noting how unaffected her manners were, how confident and witty she was, and of course her fine eyes didn't hurt either. I believe he saw that she was his opposite in temperament and would therefore complement him perfectly. Now obviously once she turned him down, his attraction became a raging inferno ... to every readers' delight!

Because of his wealth, Darcy spent his whole life being told how important he was. So, he was actually a bit of a pompous git to begin with. He found Elizabeth to be highly intelligent, and their conversations fascinated him. And as he began to fall in love with her, so she became more and more beautiful to him. Although Jane was declared to be the beauty of the family, Elizabeth was also very attractive, and I would say the most intelligent. It was never stated in the book that she was plain, rather that the two oldest girls were the prettiest.

    I think Lizzie's indifference to Darcy's wealth was absolutely part of the attraction, but I think it probably also had to do with her personality. I'm sure that there were more women in that town that took a disliking to him after that first ball, too, but Lizzie was actually fun to be around

    Mr. Darcy's wealth was off the charts for most, but you also have to consider the value of his assets as well. When you add the value of Pemberley to the value of all his lands and whatever other assets he had, you continue in the astronomical range as you put it Ellie. People like to pick on the rich and some of them deserve it, but the rich have problems of their own and it becomes relative when you analyze it. One of those obvious problems is you don't know who your real friends are. Everyone wants your money so they are willing to put up with you. That does not make for a very high quality life. Some will say that all the money will make it ok. You only show your ignorance by that belief as you have rose colored glasses on when it comes to money. Darcy made an interesting statement to Lizzie on the walk they took at the end of the movie. He said he was given good principles early on but was allowed to live them with pride and conceit. Being prideful and conceited causes you to belittle others and sometimes worse. You really are nothing but a bully. Darcy's station in life would have given him a lot of time to people watch and make observations about them and even criticize them, but being a bully of any sort is not a happy life no matter how arrogant you are. In Lizzie he saw a woman who was willing to sacrifice a life where she was provided for if she did not really love the man and her love was not the pretty superficial love we know today. She took it serious and would not violate her conscience. Darcy may have had his problems but he was not stupid. He saw her for what she really was and he was impressed and he should be. If you are used to having the best of everything - Lizzie was the best. But it is more than just having the best. She humbled him and he became a greater man. Now the two of them could have a very substantial relationship. People today like others for such superficial reasons and wrong reasons. If you marry you must find someone you like spending time with. What a joy life is when we can share it with others. We do this from an early age. The marriage relationship is the most important. Everything counts here. When two enjoy life together they don't need to work so hard on making the fire stay and fight boredom. All the world is at their feet. Darcy chose to love Lizzie because of the person she is. He fell in love with her because she showed him that life with her would be substantial, meaningful, and joyful and she showed this by just being herself. How could he not fall in love with her?! Honestly, I get tired of all the sex stuff all over the Austin sites. It makes P&P cheap if you ask me. Sure they were physically attracted to each other and would have enjoyed that, but not in the cheap way people do today. Sex is not special anymore to most. It is an extension of the relationship. For Darcy and Lizzie it would have been filled with deep passion by two people who really respect and care for each other. That is far and above what we see today. Some of you won't even understand what I just wrote. You will think I am nuts. I am an Austin nut but it is because of the high quality books she wrote. This has lead to high quality movies. I just don't care for anything that cheapens her work.

    I agree passion is so much more than just sex. In fact, I would argue that it isn’t even a requirement. Very enjoyable, but not a requirement!

    I saw this channel in my notifications for the first time and don't remember why I subbed to this channel, but since I'm a huge fantasy and wordbuilding nerd, I'm assuming you've made videos like this before. 😂 The economics aspect is my favorite part of history and fiction.
