Is Creatine Safe? | Creatine for Muscle and Brain Performance- Thomas DeLauer

Is Creatine Safe? | Creatine for Muscle and Brain Performance- Thomas DeLauer:
Finally, one of the most popular questions! Is Creatine Safe? Want to Chat with me? Go to http:/www.ThomasDeLauer.com
We are constantly burning energy. This energy ultimately comes from the food that we eat. Through the Krebs Cycle ATP is created, and this is what is used as fuel in our cells.
ATP is created through three pathways, depending on the type of activity we are performing:
1. Phosphagen - for immediate and short lived energy needs
2. Anaerobic Glycolysis - slower than #1, does not need oxygen
3. Aerobic Glycolysis - slowest, requires oxygen
Phosphagen:
When ATP is broken down for energy, what is left is ADP and a phosphate group. Creatine phosphate combines the phosphate group with the ADP to quickly create more ATP for immediate energy needs. Very little ATP and creatine phosphate is stored in muscle cells. Pathway used to create energy at the onset of exercise as well as for quick exercised lasting about 1 to 30 seconds, such as kicking a ball, a fast sprint or lifting weights.
Where does creatine come from?
Creatine can either come directly from your diet or can be produced by the liver and kidneys using amino acids. When you consume more creatine you produce less in the body.
An early study on creatine supplementation found a 20% increase in the stored creatine and phosphocreatine in the body when participants consumed 20 grams of creatine for several days in a row. This increase looks to be the upper limit with the remaining being excreted through urine. Many studies have shown benefits of creatine supplementation, including bench press, sprinting, high intensity exercise, among other fast cardio and weight training type workouts.
Side Effects:
Unfortunately studies have examined safety of creatine for less than two weeks, not for long term use. Many possible side effects include dehydration, muscle cramping, nausea, kidney damage and kidney stones, and renal damage. Creatine supplements are not monitored by the FDA and thus there is the danger of impurities in supplements.
Creatine as a Nootropic:
Nootropics are substances that people use to enhance their brain function, giving mental clarity, energy and health. Five percent of the creatine stored in our bodies is found in our organs, such as the brain. For your brain to work quickly, it needs readily available energy stores just like your muscles do! Neurons rely on the fast phosphagen cycle to create energy for communication. Vegetarians have been found to have lower levels of creatine stores in their brains. One study found creatine supplementation to enhance performance on some skills related to cognitive function.
Tips:
You can find dietary creatine in meats, particularly beef, wild game and wild caught fish. A common study protocol was to have participants take 20 grams per day for 5 or 6 days, so be sure not to exceed that quantity. It’s only beneficial for short duration, high intensity exercise, not for endurance sports.

Most of the negative side effects of Creatine stem from to taking far too much. Sticking to a maintenance dose of 3g to 5g a day is highly unlikely to produce any adverse side effects. For example, water is very good for you but if you drink it in excess, it can result in water intoxication (hyponatremia)!

Uhh.. I don't really see him saying anything bad other than there's no long term research of the effects. Short term research has shown that your body kicks right back in with creatine production as soon as you stop supplementation. He mentioned dehydration but if you're taking creatine you need to be drinking a ton of water. Like a gallon a day give or take the amount/your body weight. Also more if you're consuming stims like coffee or preworkout as they're diuretics and dehydrate the body as well. Honestly most people who are hitting the gym or not, are not drinking enough water per day. Another tip is get yourself some creatine hcl, it allows for better absorption as most of creatine is just nuked as it hits your stomach acid. It's so bio-available that you can honestly take half what you would normally.

I've heard about creatine over the last 20 years or so but only from a muscle building perspective. Only became interested late last year after reading an article about its actual workings and array of benefits including brain and organ function with small supplementation. Thought I would give it a try and it seems I respond really well to it. Went to see my relies at Christmas and they didn't comment on how skinny I look for once. This stuff makes me look like I have been working out even when I haven't and within a couple of days I feel I want to start working out any way because I have surplus energy to use. Got a couple more kg on order which was cheap as and should last for a while.

I'm 73, excellent health and labs and wanted to throw a bit more resistant weight around. My primary physician said..."No way should you take the stuff (creatine). It WILL damage your organs." I said okay, what can I take safely and she said a protein supplement in moderation will help you without risk of damage internally. 'Nuff said. .02

Glad to have your balanced reports. I am curious to know your thoughts: about 3 years ago I searched hard to unearth any info I could about benefits vs. problems with creatine. Ultimately I discovered one study by a sports science researcher that determined in a longer random exam using performance athletes, that for athletic purposes there are noticeable improvements. Forgive me as I can't recall the author or the institution (my memory recall is U of Virginia, Dr. John ? and I found it cited through the Mayo Clinic website?) but the result is that he advised this to be the only medically recognisable legal supplement on the market with identifiable anabolic benefits. Is this credible info? Keep up the great work. Cheers.

It gives you this false idea of you being buffer. I used to take creatine(just about 3-5 gms a day in case you wondered) and my weight increased. I thought i was gaining muscle, but only during the cutting period i realised that almost 30% of my gains came from muscle water retention. I think creatine is awesome, but honestly i dont want that false feeling accomplishment of achieving your goal.

I experimented after reading a book about nutrient timing, and I started doing bodybuilding type exercises. I now mix 5g of creatine with a sport drink with 140 calories of sugar, and drink this right before, during, and immediately following the workout. I then immediately switch to some protein, slow-burning carbs, and no more sugar or creatine. What it seems to do for me, be it real or. placebo effect, is I recover much more quickly between sets, and can usually squeeze out a couple more reps given the same exercises using a given weight. I do not creatine load, as just use it while I am actually lifting. It seems to cut my workout time by about 1/3. I don't do this during abs and aerobics day. On my days off I don't take a sports drink or creatine. I only use it for a few more reps and a speedier recovery time between sets while I am using it.

The longest study on creatine was for Huntington's disease and it went on for a long while. They thought it may be possible that it could help with the onset of the disease but not truly enough to make a big difference.

It works. It's safe. We already naturally produce it. This replaces it faster than we can after we train. I benefit loads from it. Often find those extra reps, even that extra set.

I think the best would be using the best quality available and time to time discontinue consuming it so your body doesn't forgets to manufacture it.

You mentioned red meat has more than poultry but what about seafood? Curious about general fish such as sardines but even octopus which I love.

Today i bought and tried some creatine mono after the first time i tried it months ago when i felt most skeptical, i saw my muscles were more responsive as if they were missing a gear before plus a boost in energy all day even after a large meal which is normally not the case so this is making me see good things so far for creatine! it is effective within this message and science.

How much creatine do you ESTIMATE would an average person get from their diet? Lets say organic grassfed fed beef three times a week wild caught salmon once a week? Or better yet how much do you estimate you get from your diet without supplementation?

Wait...I may not know much about creatine monohydrate but I thought our bodies consumes much less than 20g's. Even during the loading phase. Doesn't the excess amount turn into a byproduct called creatinine?
