L-Carnitine | How to Mobilize Fat & Enhance Brain Health - Thomas DeLauer

L-Carnitine is So Much More Than Just Fat Loss! I'm all about boosting the body, the brain, and business, and L-Carnitine does just that. Learn more about my thought process at www.ThomasDeLauer.com
Acetyl-L-carnitine is an antioxidant and amino acid naturally produced in the body and is one of many forms of carnitine. Carnitines help shuttle fat to mitochondria to be burned to produce energy. They also help to shuttle the waste products away during the process. Different carnitines have different functions. Acetyl-L-carnitine is mainly used for brain health purposes as it is able to pass through the blood-brain barrier due to the acetyl group. Acetyl-l-carnitine is used for a wide variety of disorders regarding brain health: Alzheimer’s, depression, age-related memory loss, thinking problems due to Lyme Disease and alcoholism, Down syndrome, nerve pain, etc. It is also used in men for low testosterone and infertility.
Acetyl-L-Carnitine vs L-Carnitine, and Fat Loss:
The body can convert acetyl-L-carnitine to L-carnitine and visa / versa. Do not substitute one for the others. Benefits are based on the kind of carnitine that you take. L-Carnitine is primarily taken for fat loss as it helps to mobilize stored fat and move it to the mitochondria for use as energy. 95% of the carnitine in the body is found in skeletal muscles. By increasing muscle carnitine concentration you increase muscle fat oxidation, thus burning more stored fat rather than glucose. Until recently, studies did not support that increased dietary carnitine would lead to increased muscle carnitine concentration.
A 2011 study in The Journal of Physiology found that after 6 months of L-carnitine feeding combined with carbohydrate consumption led to a 21% increase in muscle carnitine content. This study further showed that this increase had an effect of muscle metabolism during exercise. Following low intensity exercise it was found that less muscle glycogen was used. There was no measure of lipid oxidation, but it follows theoretic models that lipid metabolism would take the place of the glucose metabolism. The study also found an increased level of muscle lactate following high intensity exercise. What was very exciting was the finding of a performance enhancement: work output was increased by 11% during a 30 minute trial. Further studies are needed - complication with how long studies need to be held to see an impact of carnitine supplementation.
How it Helps Brain Function:
Mitochondria are the energy power plants of the body and brain, and their decay has been linked to many age related diseases. Supplementation may help mitochondria produce energy in tissues like the brain. One study fed rats acetyl-L-carnitine - reversed age-related declines in L-carnitine levels and also reversed some age-related changes in liver mitochondrial function. Another study found that the supplementation of acetyl-L-carnitine and alpha lipoic acid led to memory improvement, reduced oxidative stress and improved mitochondrial energy metabolism. It is also used to synthesise acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter in the brain. Acetylcholine has been shown to boost memory.
Antioxidant and anti-Inflammatory agent properties:
A 2010 study on alcohol induced oxidative damage in the brain found that acetyl-L-carnitine served as an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory agent. Oxidative damage and inflammation in the brain are known to cause injury in the brain.
Tips:
Take acetyl-L-carnitine in the morning to promote healthy brain functioning.Pair with alpha lipoic acid, an antioxidant that is known to rid the brain of free radicals.

I took this amazing amino acid as a fat burner, after a few days my mood had significantly improved. This seemed connected to the LCA. After some research, I found out how much LCA improves mental health. In 2018 there was a study done that showed people with depression, anxiety, and PTSD had low levels of LCA, it has been the first biomarker discovered for depression. Also, my skin has improved since taking it. I am over the moon to have accidentally stumble on this little power house.

Acetyl carnitine is amazing. Was struggling in college with basic memory and learning functions. Once I took acetyl l carnitine combined with alpha lipoic acid. My learning ability and memory abilities shot through the roof. Literally. Next thing you know I started being a tutor for every a class I was taking. I wasn't getting paid but I was helping other with issues. This is something I was not able to do in so many different subjects. That supplement is extremely powerful, amazing and life changing.

Currently self teaching myself trigonometry right now along with a few other engineering subjects. I plan on becoming a math tutor by summer or fall. Also other things also. I recommend you not to take more than 400 or 500 mgs of the acetyl carnitine a day at least for 2 to 3 months. Its extremely powerful and can overwhelm your brain. Happened to me before a few times. May just been for me idk if your brain will react the same in that bad way.

homas DeLauer - Great video, as always. Lots to learn on your channel. Note: L-carnitine shuttles long-chain fatty acids (14 carbons or more) into the mitochondrial matrix (inner membrane space), including VLCFAs after they have been shortened by the peroxisome. But not fats less than 14-C. Carnitine is considered a conditionally essential amino acid for those who work out vigerously (and preterm infants + some people with genetic defects). Interesting that humans synthesize carnitine from the common amino acid, lysine, or better put, from the substrate TML (6-N-trimethyllysine), which is derived from the methylation of the amino acid lysine.

Hi Thomas, my question is this: I have been using L-carnitine for the last couple of weeks and I love it!! I have taking 1mg n the morning on an empty stomach, before my workout 1.5mg, BCAA's during my work out, then 1.5mg after the workout and 1.5mg with my evening meals. Now I want to incorporate acetyl L carnitine HCl and L Carnosine and L citrulline. I have gotten some information and some half advice. I really want to do this right. Because I have an SVT/MVP but I'm finding that L-carnitine is healing it, and all the benefits of the others I just want to take it properly. I workout everyday alternating HIIT and weight training almost almost per day where I will skip one or two days of HIIT or Weight training hope that makes sense. Thank you!!!

I took this when I was just using up my stores of supplements I bought on sale. I’m 100% convinced L-carnitine was the reason I lost several pounds of fat and increased vascularity like crazy in the last month. I hit a plateau for about 4 months, maybe losing 0.5 lbs of fat a month, very modest. I had about 4 bottles of l-carnitine I drank in that month and I QUICKLY went from kind of vascular pumped up, to vascular at all times of the day. I believe thats because it helped rid my body of small amounts of fat in certain places. I have a CRAZY low carb diet, and I still lift 6 days a week, but I had plateau’d for months, and in the past month the only thing I changed was drinking those expiring l-carnitine bottles. I can now see veins near my stomach and near my lats, something I’ve NEVER seen before in my life. In addition to a very strict diet AND hard workout program, I believe that supplement was what pushed me over the top.

Thomas - thanks for the video. Very informative. Love your videos in general. Have you done one comparing hydroluzed collagen protein (peptide) powder vs bone broth protein powder vs whey vs brown rice/pea/vegan protein? Bone broth and collagen peptide are same or different protein as they both provide collagen...? Different types of collagen? Thanks.
