Is Counting Calories or Carbs Better for Weight Loss?

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Low-carb diets work for weight loss and low-calorie diets ALSO work for weight loss. So, with these two successful strategies available to us, why isn’t obesity a thing of the past? This video looks at how weight loss happens via the Calorie Model and the Carbohydrate Model and the one thing that destroys them both.

My experience of eating whole foods over a few months and strictly cutting out the processed junk has been that those processed items now no longer taste so great. I don’t even miss these items; in fact, many chips or snacks taste “fake” compared to an omelette or salad with avocado and organic vegetables. All that is to say that those go-to snacks with few actual nutrients do begin to lose their appeal when replaced with whole, nutrient dense foods.

Thanks so much Dr. Becky for sharing your knowledge, enthusiasm and encouragement! I started the LCHF way of eating February 1, 2023 and as of today (May 2, 2023) I have lost 21 lbs. Down from 210 to 189. I am a tall (6' 3") older man (58 yo) and have always been somewhat skinny and a hard gainer. However, over the past few years I've seen weight gain mostly on my gut so I was "Skinny Fat". I started back to the gym, and then discovered LCHF and Intermittent Fasting which has been a wonderful blessing. As with many of other KZread comments I have seen, I have experienced the gain in mental clarity and energy by implementing proper training, LCHF and IF. I am also a cancer survivor (10 years in remission) and have been concerned for a long time about eating healthy, but really did not know how to start. Now, I have the best tools to help keep a recurrence at bay. Thanks for all you do! God Bless you!

From my experiences I did keto and didn’t lose weight. I was doing keto plus intermittent fasting or one meal a day and didn’t see fat loss. But When I slashed my meal in half or even 1/3 I began to see results. Calorie counting was the primary thing. So if you can do calorie counting, keto, and try intermittent fasting you should see results. Of course, eating whole foods are best with proper sleep and high intensity exercise are a plus!

The best comparison video ever on weight control and why it's challenging to control weight loss and maintain the loss. As soon as you start adding carbs back while consuming fat, you gain the weight back quickly. And again the yoyo dieting process starts all over again and again and again year after year after year. 💡Ketogenesis is a lifestyle change for me. Over the last 6 months of weight loss, 35 pounds and10 more to go, I would stay with FAT. Sugar controlled my life. Thank you Dr. Gillaspy, as always, your clear explanations in your videos explains the "why" of why metabolism is so challenging. At the six month mark of NO sugar and NO processed, the results = NO CRAVINGS! This is KEY for me staying in a ketogenic state.

I love your videos Dr. Becky. After watching them for a few years I've gotten out of the habit of having low carb processed "snacks" made by the diet industry to having fruit with sugar free whipping cream or homemade almond flour crackers when I need something to munch on. It wasn't perfect at first. In fact, I gained about 7 pounds in the last year because I was getting used to eating whole foods again. Now that I have and am doing it naturally instead of reaching for the latest low carb creation, I've lost 2 of those 7 pounds and haven't even weighed or measured my food, or written down my food intake. Reaching for whole foods comes naturally now. I still watch your videos regularly because they are always so inspiring and I need that continued inspiration. But, I feel so much better sticking to those whole foods and avoiding the processed stuff. Thank you!

IMO, we have been duped and setup for a life of obesity and metabolic syndrome, starting with the breakfast cereal in the morning, thinking that is a viable, proper breakfast food. If I had had the knowledge, I wouldn't have eaten a primarily carbohydrate diet. The main foods in my diet were pasta, breads, and vegetables. If I was a parent, I would not be feeding what I see in families' shopping carts. 😢

A Walmart frozen food section has the placard "Healthy meals" over the door. I have to laugh and wonder, "What the heck is all the rest of the stuff in this store?" Just walk in the door of the store and you are faced with pallets of softdrinks, literally walls of chips brands and stacks and stacks of cookies and candy. And then to see all the people with carts full of chips and boxes of processed foods and numerous sixpacks of full-on softdrinks slung over the side ... well, is there any wonder there's a obesity problem? Keep up the wonderful work you're doing.

Dr. Becky is great. I've been following her almost as long as she's been here. This one has a different tone because, despite her usual soft-toned gentle approach, in this one we can hear her disgust with current trends and thinking...and that's OK. The fact is that our food supply has worsened as our ability to cook has disappeared....which, socially, even correlates to the death of family dinners. So there are both food supply and social issues in the way we "grab a bite" these days. I used to think Mom's black cast iron frying pan was the great enemy of my metabolic life. In the low-carb low processed foods world Mom's cooking was about as good as it gets...that would have been during the '50's & '60's. Dr. Becky is right on the mark in her discussions and in her disgust over the quality of our current food supply.

There's another reason why carbs are bad which links back to insulin: insulin inhibits fat burning and carbs raises insulin the most, so not only does carbs make you eat more, it also locks you out of burning fat which is why people have so much trouble losing it to get healthy. It's also the reason why low carb diets are effective because it allows fat-burning to be possible. In other words, nothing has really changed from our grandparent's generation: sweets and junk food will make you fat. If you try to tell them that you can still eat them by "counting calories" they will call you an idiot who's trying to come up with an excuse to eat sweets and junk food over veggies and healthy foods.

I eat to a protein goal every day and try to keep the fat equal or lower in grams. Works well. I personally skipped Keto because it was easy to see the garbage being created. Is fiber a nutrient if it is not required in the body? Same question for carbs, actually. Either way, agree 100% stay away from 'fake' foods.

  • @judithowens8212

Regarding fibre as a nutrient, we can distinguish between whether a nutrient provides 'calories' in itself, or whether it 'nourishes' the body in other ways, such as promoting a healthy and diverse gut biome. Or contributing vitamins and minerals needed for enzyme pathways, or hormone production etc. eg, is Vit D a nutrient? Does it provide calories? Will you be healthy without it? Similarly, is magnesium a nutrient? Try refining it out of your diet nd see how you go..... Not well, I think

  • @seanveach950

    @seanveach950

@@judithowens8212 Well, vit d and magnesium are required in the body, fiber is not. What do you think fiber provides in any way we know for sure is needed to make anything of value in the body? Calories are a very imprecise and incorrect proxy for energy, not nutrients, unless we are using calories as a proxy for an amount of food, which is inaccurate as well. I find it hard to think of either fiber or ingested carbs as nutrients, though we call them such.

Who decides what adverts precede videos? I'm asking because the one before this video featured a muscle man saying that carbs don't make you fat and that he loves to scoff doughnuts; not helpful at all. I think it's time that manipulating things like lists of the best foods to eat and the info on food packaging ( for financial gain ) should be made illegal. The dieting plans of too many people are being sabotaged by deception. It preys heavily on the weakness we have for sweet things and to be honest i think it's quite evil. It's the same as tricking a dry alcoholic into having a drink. Having said all that i have to applaud this video, it's one of Becky's best! 😎

I take a probiotic vitamin rich shake in the morning, then a Kachava shake at lunch. Healthy all vegetables and protein dinner. I drink a gallon of water daily and I use TRUE LEMON in it. I am 61. I am very active. I have put on 20 pounds since menopause. I cannot lose any weight. I am completely stuck!! What am I doing wrong.

How big are the shakes? Could it be you need a few less calories than you're having? Just a thought?

Search DB videos. I think in one of them she expressed the idea that because you are drinking 2 of your meals, you are spiking your insulin levels due to the fast digestion of the liquid meals. Maybe try switching at least 1 meal to Whole Foods and see if it makes a difference?

Calorie counting is needed w keto . You can’t eat 12000 calories and not gain. Ketosis works if you have no distractions. It is great for older people with grown kids. Not the case for me.

The list of low carb foods are all quite high in fat. I cannot eat fat because I have IBS and it makes me quite unwell. This includes nuts. I'm also unable to drink dairy milk and nut milks. What do you suggest?

You might want to take a look at something called the GAPS diet. It is geared to gut healing, and it focuses on digestible, nutritious, gut healing food. It encourages eating a lot of fat, but you could gradually increase it as your gut heals and is able to tolerate it. Good luck!

Crazy part is even our grandparents junk food was healthier. My memes pies where made with whole ingredients compared to the chemical Frankenstein foods of today.

AMEN. I switched over to a whole food ketogenic diet and it changed my life. I still miss French fries but it’s not worth feeling like trash.

Is there a reason doctors, or diet specialists won’t answer the question of high fat/low carb as related to heart disease? I don’t get it, they say they want to help folks but all we get is crickets.

I have a video on low-carb diets and cholesterol that you can find on my channel page or through a KZread search. There are many other videos on KZread that address this issue.

Apart from weight/fat loss and weight maintenance, but for your overall health and wellbeing - Cut Out The Rubbish Food, it is that simple. Get the junk rubbish food full of processed sugar out of your diet and the craving will go. 😄

hey Becky i am on a low carb since 5 days ago i've noticed my sleep went bad from the first day i started it, and it didn't get any better...why i'm getting trouble sleeping on a low carb diet? is this because calories restriction or a sort of withdrawal? i had notice when i get trouble sleeping if i eat an hig carb calorie dense food my deep normal sleep hooks istantly, like in 15 minutes....but i don't understand if the cause could be calories restriction or low sugar or a sort of withdrawal you know.... what do you think? what can i try to get better this thing? do you have any suggestion? thanks (i bumped up the fat like you said i'm taking 1 gram fat per kg bodyweight) my calories restriction is like 1600 kcal day...before i started a low carb diet i was on 2000 kcal day...i suppose my maintenance was like around 2200 kcal but i need to get rid of 5 to 6 kilograms of fat..
