I started painting towards the end of 2017. For the first couple of years I was dependant heavily on tutorials because I was still new and not super confident and I was still learning skills and techniques. I gradually moved away from tutorials because I started feeling a bit of a fraud and I really wanted to stretch my creative muscles a little bit so sometimes even if I’m following a tutorial I would simply sketch the basic shapes and then use a completely different color palette. The tutorial is just background noise while I’m painting. I’m not actually watching it. For example I once painted a red rose from a tutorial entirely in shades of blue. Now I paint almost exclusively on my own. I do use reference images (such as un splash images, national geographic landscape images which I credit etc) just to get the basic proportions right and then everything else is my own: composition, color palette, texture and details so that the final painting doesn’t even look like the reference image anymore. If I do watch tutorials I’m not painting at the same time or reproducing anything from them. I just find it really relaxing to watch them and I learn a lot but I don’t create solely from them anymore. I think to start creating on your own maybe try using certain element from a tutorial and then incorporating some of your own unique style and elements. If you do that more and more then you will eventually start creating exclusively on your own.

@@vickiweiss311 I didn't go to art school or anything but I did take quite a few Skillshare courses in the beginning of my art journey. (Honestly I can't even remember the last time I took a Skillshare course. Now I just watch them for fun.) Those and other free courses and YT tutorials (Katie Jobling's and other artists), were enough for me until now. However, lately I found that I needed to take my art to the next level and perhaps try to sell my paintings. So I am currently taking Katie Jobling's "Learn to Paint with Confidence". It definitely costs more than Skillshare but totally worth it, Katie being one of my favourite contemporary artists and since I've learnt a lot from her tutorials I knew I would definitely learn a lot more from this course. To be honest, I haven't found another course that is worth my money.

I didn't start with tutorials. I started thinking up what I wanted to paint that day. And once I had the idea in my head I would look for the perfect reference photo or artwork, or a combination of a few. And I would trace what I wanted then paint over those traced guidelines. It helped me grow my own style and learn how to work with the paints I had and blending/color theory as well as learn and develop my own style. It was like having training wheels. I found that more personal and creative than just a straight up tutorial. I would just print the references and transfer with chalk pastels onto my canvas...i sometimes still incorporate that method into my pieces depending on what I'm trying to bring to life

I needed to hear this. I have been painting for a little over 4 years and i depend on tutorials all the time. Once and awhile I will paint from a reference photo. I find myself getting more and more frustrated with tutorials because I struggle making the painting look like the tutorial. I feel less stressed when I'm doing my own thing probably because I'm not trying to "match" someone else's work. I think you hit the nail on the head. It is time to let go and see where my artist style can take me. I need to start developing my own techniques instead of depending on learning someone else's. Thank you so much. 😊

IMO, copying art is an essential part of development. Just like a musician learning to play their instrument by learning techniques with differing degrees of difficulty through different songs.

Hi Katie, Great advice. I have been painting for 8 years now. I relied on tutorials in the beginning. I start with a reference photo and make it my own. I'm putting my own style on it. When an artist finds their own uniqueness, it shows it his/her work. Keep being creative, everyone. 😊

I am a new painter and am painting with lots of tutorials still to learn techniques different artists use and hopefully one day I'll have what I have learnt in the bag and will be able to paint from my own photos. I do see that I tend to like realism more than impressionist style so that might be what my personal style will turn out to be, but I do try impressionist tutorials as well to try and loosen up a little. My very 1st painting was your waves tutorial Katy. Thanks for the tools you so selflessly make availabke to us newbies!!

I am a beginner to painting and I wouldn’t be ashamed saying that art is the worst skills among everything I know - can’t do much better than drawing a stickman. But yet I felt myself so eager to paint, I so want to learn it that I decided to purchase the equipments and have a go at it. Of course my work ended up like a 4 year old but I am still please. I like the feeling of trying something I like and I like the feeling wanting to look how to improve. Back to the topic. I do look at tutorials and I do copy some of the Internet work. Because I simply had no idea where to start. I wanted to know what technique to as used and I wanted to get a feel if I can use the same technique. So I do copy! But on the other hand I would love to see your tutorial in how to come up with my own work. I feel inside me I do have some ideas what I wanted to paint.

I started drawing during the pandemic -- and painting 6 months ago. I've been painting sunflowers using Pixabay and my own references. Dissatisfied, I googled how to paint sunflowers in acrylic. Found dozens of videos, watched half a dozen or so, and realized every single person I watched painted their sunflowers differently. My takeaway is that I AM actually heading down my own style road -- I just need to keep practicing especially on painting the petal shape. I was delighted to see my colors are pretty much in the ballpark based on the videos I watched. So... back to painting!

I learned to paint before KZread and tutorials, and I learned from copying from art magazines some art from my favorite artists I never sold any of that but learned so much just from copying and I never have regretted it. It led me to what and how I paint today I couldn’t have done it without those early influences, and even with KZread starting by copying is a good way to learn how to start and what the process is, and eventually it doesn’t feel like yours and you can start being more creative with what you have learned from different artist and create art that feels like yours. KZread is a great tool, but just a tool

I know when I learned enough from tutorials to move on when I would get annoyed with them. I would rather use a different brush, or a different mix of colors, etc. That's when I found my own style, when I listened to my instincts. That's when I got relaxed and "lost" in painting where time would just go by and I wouldn't even know.

I'd even use the word .. bored ... no offense to my beloved artists that i follow consistently! but there came a point that I only watch a tutorial if it's a new technique or strictly practical, like brush care or something, or a targeted technique. I still check all my tribe of KZread artists every day, but I seldom try to paint along anymore.

It is wrong copying other artist even copying art from Van gogh. That's not a artist and not a a true artist I'd you copy. That's why I'm one of the true artists because I use my own ideas, I imagine, I paint how I want and feel and express myself and yet I'm born with a disability that's microcephaly, and I Don't go to stupid college and school and ckass to do this because Sence a toddler back the 90s I thaught my self with no help and still no help and it will be 2024 and I'll be 29 on the 18th of January. A lot of artists that's true artist like me, maudie, and van Gogh. Copying is wrong people need to stop. They need to stop making videos about artist make mistakes and need to stop making videos about does and don’ts its stupid and ridiculous. 0:30
