I have actually been subconsciously implementing this advice over the last few months and feel like I have really turned a corner now. I completely agree that focusing on the process is key and we need to shout this from the rooftops!!

I feel the same way!

for a long time i tried to replicate the style i saw in the tutorials i chose to watch, which is drawing cartoons starting with a sketch, then clean black lines, then flat color. i could never finish stuff because i hated doing detailed clean lineart and often failed at making it smooth. flat coloring felt boring and tedious, especially with colored pencil. things changed when i realized that process wasnt for me. i switched to using paint, pastels and colored pencil to do a painterly style where i layer colors on continously. it feels messy and expressive, and im constantly adding new elements when i add the colors and shading, instead of just tediously filling in lines i already set out like a coloring book

I WAS LITERATELY THINKING ABOUT THIS YESTERDAY !! I realized that i will always feel motivated to do is 1) draw loose pencil work 2) trust in the inking stage to make fun creative decisions 😇😇😇

This is honestly the best videos I've seen regarding finding style. I'm like you (even with the rhythm haha) and tend to get hyperfixated on stylization which always results in me feeling totally overwhelmed. I feel close to knowing what I want artistically, but it's been hard for me to differentiate between what kind of art I want to make versus what kind of art I'm attracted to, so it's really refreshing to shift my focus to what feels best. Thanks for this!

You have no idea how much you helped me…. I’ve always been chasing other artist’s style that I loved, but I have always hated the process of doing it. Really great advice. I sort of tried this early this year after noticing I basically dread doing art, put it off on the least excuse, and yet I know it's want to do. There just seems to be this problem about actually doing it and I realised I don't enjoy it any more. So I started experimenting with different processes, but unfortunately as soon as I found something that worked a little bit better I stopped experimenting and tried to make myself do that process every day. Result: back to square one, I avoid doing art. This made me realise I stopped experimenting way too soon and I need to fight my tendency to be a hard taskmaster to myself, like you said if you enjoy the process you are using it's going to be way easier to progress!

This is some of the best artistic/creative advice I’ve heard since… I don’t even know when! Thank you so much for taking the time and brainspace it took to figure all these things out and make it such a valuable resource to the rest of us who are struggling 😅

I think I find myself loosing focus when I try to even try to draw. I have downloaded so many apps and just never seem to stay in one place. I’m older and close to retirement age and jus t want to try something new in crafting . I love sewing,and have been playing with my cricut as well just seem to get stuck in a rut. I see so many people get started in less than a year on their small business and keep asking myself how the heck do I get started? A big, BIG thank you from me. I've been stuck on and off for years! A friend suggested a while back that I should focus on the joy of creating and forget about the end result. But I couldn't quite get my head around that until I watched your video today. I am soooo relieved as it's been such a worry and so frustrating. I've made some notes as coincidentally today, I decided to take a long, hard look at what's not working. Looking at it in terms of a process experiment to evaluate how I actually feel about creating some projects instead of 'chasing the end product' is a massive paradigm shift for me. Phew!! Great point to think about- don't let focus on style development take you out of creative flow/ involvement with the work, & too much into an evaluative mode. This is a great approach because it gives the analytic brain something to do by designing and running, and criticizing the experimental parameters rather than the work itself.

This is the video I've been looking for! Thank you for laying out your thoughts and process. As an analytical overthinker who struggles with consistency, finding flow in my studio practice hasn't ever felt easy. It's always felt so much harder than I feel like it should?! I needed a framework for showing up while honing in on the processes and mediums that I like best and developing skills as I go. I have too many ideas, not enough focus. Also I need those constraints. Without them, there are infinite possibilities and I don't know what is the right choice!

this is brilliant and its basically how i ended up choosing the career ive been doing for over 10 years now: by picking what kind of work makes me lose track of time.

Yes. If you're regularly entering a flow state doing whatever you do, is a great sign that you've found your niche.

This fits with how I’ve been approaching my efforts to 'learn to do art'. After much money spent, and numerous mediums experimented with, I’ve finally found my preferred medium: gouache. I already know my preferred scale is basically whatever I can keep in a 'sketchbook' type setup. And I’ve been narrowing down my preferred subject to the landscape scenery styles I both like to look at (that make me feel clear and uncluttered) AND the style I feel like I’d be willing to gradually work towards. (5yos can paint/draw better than me atm.) I also know that I want a zen-like feel while I’m working on it…while applying a new 'rule'/understanding that I’m trying to incorporate into my improving abilities. (Like the 80/20 principle: what's one small thing that would take less than 20% effort to learn/incorporate (keep my zen) but would yield 80% improvement towards my preferred direction?) After each effort I ask myself “what did I like doing?” “What did I learn in the process of making it?” And “What one _small_ thing would I most like to change?” I write this on my sketchbook pages with the painting, so I can look back and see how much I’ve changed.

I've begun shooting photos on my phone recently. It's opening new aspects, such as including myself in them. I am beginning to sense this is revealing more "psychological"sides of me + my environment. My images are surprising me. I didn't know I'd even like phone photography. I am just seeing where it goes.

Wholeheartedly agree with this advice. I try to put the enjoyment of the process at the forefront of my art practice. It’s so easy to slip into focusing on whether you’ve made something ‘good’, but I have to keep reminding myself that art is a healing process for me, and that is what matters. The end results are almost inconsequential! Love your advice on experimenting to find just the right fit in terms of media, method, subject etc. Thanks for sharing ❤

Good advice to find a process you really like. My inspiration comes from dancing where I have worked both very freely with bodymindspace awareness, and experimenting with very basic movement possibilities and classical techniques in different styles - and I have been inspired from meditation and awareness training - combining that and using it freely in my drawing and painting processes. I love the stillness and the listening into the living moment - and to open into processes of improvisation 🙃🦋🦎🦉🦄🙂😀

Oh my goodness. I 've been stuck for years and I don't even know why I keep trying. I'm always disappointed in what I do which creates a lot of anxiety for me, yet I keep coming back to it. I recently gained the mindset to just power through and discipline my self to work on my art consistently, telling myself it will get better. I found your channel and it is not a coincidence! I watched the entire video and let me tell you it was great! It brought many memories back when I had a pre-school and I implemented the Project Approach. The best and most important value of this project is the process. It has three phases, beginning the project, developing the project and concluding the project. It is the most enjoyable, learning tool for children and for adults. Thanks for the guidance. I love to paint with oils and I love the entire process. It takes me to another world of peace and joy. thanks for sharing your advice. a short while ago i decided to figure out what kind of art i want to do, bc my art has been very random, so i did observational drawings of all the subjects i could think of to see what i liked, and recently been thinking about media/materials i like best: trying em all out! i would also add experimenting with your whole process to completing an image. you can use traditional/digital to help in areas that are frustrating, e.g taking a photo of a pencil drawing and working on top of that in software.

The thing is...I have at least two different art forms that I really enjoy in terms of media, method and scale that I really love as a process, where I can feel myself in a flow state...but they are nothing the same or similar and I cannot find a way to join those cohesively

This is really good information. I will be adding elements, including palette, tools/techniques, substrate-perhaps those fall under method...I’m not sure what term would distinguish between abstract/realistic/still life/figurative etc. my brain wants to create a grid where I can select the next combination of elements to play with! Only this morning I was writing in my journal, asking myself if it's the process of painting in acrylics in particular, that is contributing to why I'm so stuck and unable to create work. That perhaps I need to change something, switch things up. I've been so apprehensive about even showing up to start any painting. It seems obvious now, that if I don't enjoy the process at all, I'm not going to want to show up and do it. Thank you for making this clear for me! ❤☺

I paint in acrylic and really enjoy the advantages it has over oil. I sometimes wish it looked more like oil or even felt like oil and more or less it can. there's techniques for both of those requests. I'm curious what part you don't like. Have you tried both thin coats vs thick paint ? I prefer more of a thin multi layered technique most of the time. I hope you find a process soon that fits much better.

I think this is the route I'm being forced down I can't go by visual preferences alone, by what I like to see, because I like a wide variety of stuff, and if time were no object I'd be doing almost every visual aesthetic I could think of under the sun. Process wise I alrwady discovered I have had to write off anything that requires full lineart, I never enjoyed doing lineart as much as other aspects but a long covid-leftover tremor means I can't do any long slow delicate lines without extra tools and put simply I hate doing it now.

I decided to give myself "4" sessions for any work of art. Started structuring each session into milestones / goals and that established steps. KISS mindset and the results are my style. My style is surfing as my "process" improves and my skills are refined. I am blind to my style. My family and fans see it. I don't.

What is your advice when it comes to maintaining a consistent stylization across different subject matters? I am working on a personal mobile game project and have been trying to reconcile the visual choices I made for inanimate game pieces with other aspects such as character designs and landscape backdrops. For example I am finding the methodology I followed previously does not result in character portraits that look appealing. I think according to this video I should try varying the methodology for portraits but also somehow keep in stylistically in the same universe as my existing artwork?

Found this in making music, I developed some go-tos that help me get in the right headspace and find confidence. Otherwise I sorta just float aimlessly.

Quite simply, professional artists who establish notoriety, fame, and influence, ALL have a unique style. You can SEE a Warhol and know it's a Warhol. That's what galleries and collectors are looking for in a new artist.

Great! I would probably try committing to one for a period of time or for a set number of pieces, and then switching to another. It can be tough to progress and build skill (if that's what you want to do) when you're constantly switching between different processes. I think you can absolutely become very skilled at multiple processes, but it usually happens one at a time!

You lost me when you started talking about struggling to find a rhythm. I just close my eyes and feel it. Used to go dancing all night and played percussion /djembe etc and rather than counting rhythm I just felt it. 😊

I don't like horses. You know why? When l was 21 years old first time l became a fortune teller with coffee cup after having cafe with them l saw on her cup. I saw a horse there nothing else l told her immediately you are like a horse She didn't like that at all She hurt a lot. May be she hasn't forgotten that till this. Remains in silence is the best thing to gain best advantage Look at 33 years l didn't tell any one who my man was! See you bye!

So many of these videos and demonstrations and even lessons are so fast. If you click on the little wheel at the top, you can select a speed I almost always have to slow things down.

Talks tooooo much, I got lost....

The first seven minutes is a total waste of time you’ve only been talking about what you’re going to discuss. I think you need to self edit, I’ve lost interest in what could have been informative.
