Great vid Chris! This game frustrated me as a kid soooo much (those jumps arrghh!). After beating the game last year, I can honestly say it's a great game. The soundtrack is phenomenal and the graphics are richly detailed.

Thanks! I have a similar feeling. It's definitely an 8-bit hard game, where it can be frustrating until you finally beat it. Then it's satisfying, and relatively easy on repeat play throughs.

Having beaten the game today, I have to disagree with your final conclusion. I find it really cheap that you can get hit by enemies while moving from one screen to another, collision with enemies and projectiles was at times janky, I swear their hitboxes are bigger than their sprites (you actually showed this on the right screen at 11:22). To its credit the game gives you lots of health pickups to compensate, but the fact the whip loses its upgrades when you get hit turned a lot of enemies into damage sponges, making the game even slower. I also found the platforming to be a bit too demanding given Cristopher's controls and physics, his jump is very short and it felt bad (it might be because of the GB's tiny screen, but playing the anniversary collection on a bigger screen it was very noticeable). Compared to every other classicvania I've played (1, 3, 4, Rondo) this game had the most limited controls but the most demanding platforming. This and the cheap damage made this game feel like a frustrating mess rather than something even remotely satisfying to beat. I wouldn't call it a good game, and I think calling it Castlevania lite is being too generous: it felt closer to what people that don't know much about the series think a Castlevania game is: a frustrating, unfair game where you just whip things.

I heard the gameboy color version does fix the speed, but a lot of the flaws are still present. I do say check out the speed hack since it fixes most of the issues and makes the game a lot fair.

Just beat the game today and agree with your point. Even though the design of the game is not mindless, i would say that the last level is ridiculously punishing. Spend 3 hours mastering it and learning the patterns of the last boss only to learn that there's a second stage (yes, it's a reference to the first Castelvania, but it's too damn labouring to spend 10 minutes just to have an attempt to learn this bat's patterns) . I dropped that sitting that time. I think the flaws of the game is the excessive randomness and having improved whip as the intended way to play it. But the last level is the best downside of the game. They should have fixed it, by separating the last boss encounter as the 5-th level.

Yet it is possible to have this game under your finger, unlike the infamous Ghost and Goblins in which you never feel in control completely even after getting the true ending.

I enjoyed this game too, though the speed was a huge issue at first. Don't play this one after playing a Sonic game. It was satisfying figuring out a sure fire way though each part, like a puzzle. I learned that on the last level, when entering a screen from below and those enemies shoot an orb a certain way, to just go back down and come up again to try to get it to go the way you want. After struggling to beat it, and succeeding, I went through it 2 more times as it suddenly became easy, even on the harder difficulties. Spot on with all your points.

Yeah, I do like how you can reset enemies by going off screen, reminds me of Ninja Gaiden! My experience was the same, I struggled for three straight days, then next thing you know I'm getting to Dracula without using a continue. Good stuff!

I remember playing this game for the first time like eight years ago I think and surprisingly I didn't know about the remake but then again I didn't know about this game at the time. I did enjoy what little I played of it until I got to that point late in the first level I had to jump across those platform with the fidgety controls. That was frustrating because I kept missing the jump so many times. At least that didn't kill me and I did end up beating the level after all.

People need to consider that this game came out in 1989, the year the Gameboy was released. Other than Super Mario Land, this was the only platformer available and there were not many other games available. While Super Mario Land is a better game, being a kid at the time, this game was awesome.

Glad to see a positive review! Sure it's hard to get into but when you get good at it, like other CVs breezing through the game is fun. That being said it's never too easy due to a randomness in enemy design like you mentioned. Presentation is obviously great too. My only problem is some sluggishly unresponsive controls, like the game can't keep up with certain button or dpad presses, which leads to cheap hits.

The biggest problem I found with this game is the incredibly bad slowdown. Like, the game is already slow paced as it is, but the game has awful slowdown to boot, making it even slower. Every time there's an enemy on screen you notice it get slower and if there are multiple enemies, especially if they shoot some kind of projectile, it becomes a crawl.

I was so dumb, I had no idea about the whole options menu at the bottom, to increase speed and weapons and add other ships also shooting etc, the Gradius staples. So I tried to beat the whole game with the basic starter ship. I was 6 and could barely read, so no manual reading to save me. I always wondered why it was so god damn hard. It turned me off from shoot em ups for decades. Only started playing them a lot in the last couple of years
