I'd love for someone to expand it. It was the first game I ever used on my friend's GameBoy before buying my own - and I've come back to this game throughout the years - only recently finding out that someone had colorized it correctly. (Just look for it, you'll find it.) If only there was a "Super Mario Land Maker" of sorts.

This is by far my favorite episode of "Is [Insert Game] Underrated/Still Good." I personally think it is pretty good. My only real complaint is that it's short, but it offers a nice variety of platforming challenges. I do think Land 2 is far superior in every way, but Land 1 I would say gets the job done. :D

This video captures my feelings towards Super Mario Land really well! While the short length works to the game's advantage, and there are several segments which are quite enjoyable and well designed, there are times when the questionable physics and awkward momentum begin to have a negative effect. I think that many elements in the design of the stages would be suited for a different physics engine, or for a different platformer altogether. When the platforms shrink and enemies begin appearing in unexpected locations, the screen becomes more and more cramped, which can complicate things, especially towards the finale. The different location, characters, enemies, and tone of the game is both a blessing and a curse, as it can be both a breath of fresh air (i. e. exotic stages we've never seen Mario tackle before, new staples of the franchise, such as Daisy, experiments like the multiple varied and unique bosses, and new ideas like the submarine and plane), and it can be odd and out of place, often going against the tried and true instincts of a seasoned Mario veteran (exploding Koopas, the very fast and unpredictable enemies, and an altered game engine and sense of scale). Again, because the game doesn't last for 32 levels like its NES counterpart, and was one of the premiere titles for something as little as the Game Boy, Super Mario Land often breezes by without much thought and the off-putting changes can be forgiven, as they do not last more than an hour or less for the connoisseurs. Nevertheless, this Mario title has a distinct atmosphere and taste to it, which cannot be experienced in any other game that I can think of off the top of my head, so it is well deserving of at least a modest try. Excellent review, keep up the great work!

I went back and beat this game a few months ago. I still like it. The controls always did frustrate me, I just learned that I can't run through while holding right and jumping through the whole level. The controls and level design prohibits such thing. There is no acceleration time. Mario goes 0-60 in no time and he either rises or falls way faster than in other games. Overall, it has its own unique charm and a lot of welcome changes. Also, any game that throws you into a shooting level gets bonus points in my book. (Metal Slug 3, Gunstar Heroes, Rocket Knight Adventures, Rayman games, etc.) I really like the 2nd loop better and wish I didn't have to play through the game to get to it. Great review, man!

I guess for me I've played Super Mario Land so much growing up that even if I take a long time off from the game I still am used to the controls even though they are noticeably different. I never game over and I hardly lose any lives. Not to mention I know we're literally every pipe that goes underground 2 coins is in the whole game and I also know where all three of those elevator blocks are. you know those invisible blocks that when you hit a little elevator thing comes out from it and when you stand on it it brings you up to the ceiling. There's two of them in 1 - 3 and 1 more of them in 3-3

Even though I'm relitively young and grew up with more polished titles such as Super Mario Glalaxy, I found getting used to the rythm and flow of Super Mario Land quite easy and can confidently parkour through levels after playing the game only a few times. Just to make sure, I opened the game up and it still felt good.

Perhaps it just has a different “feel” to it that throws off Mario players expecting the usual fare?... Incidentally, MarioCraft... since you don't seem to be bothered by Super Mario Land's unusual momentum physics, I wonder what you would think of the game “N.” It's a modern retro ninja platformer which is all about harnessing momentum. Seems that it's freeware now. It was also released on the Nintendo DS as “N+”. www.thewayoftheninja.org/

This game was one of the first games I completed so it was actually challenging for me as a kid. Also the size of Mario in this game suits the resolution of the Gameboy screen quite well because you can see more of the level and incoming hazards. I also like the game in general it has more variety in the levels than the Original Super Mario Bros on the NES. Even though there are only 4 Worlds each world is themed differently where SMB had 2 themes over 8 Worlds Night and Day and only 1 boss for all of them. I'm glad Super Mario Land was my first experience of a Mario game

  • @handsomebrick

I'm fascinated by this game as a study of what the bare minimum requirements are for a classic Mario platformer. If there were any less than 4 worlds, or 3 levels per world, that would have seemed inadequate somehow. Despite being simple to program, the Superball is very unique and goes a long way to giving this game an identity; ditto with the exploding koopas. Instead of having actual water levels, the game includes a marine-themed world that culminates in a shmup level where Mario pilots a submarine; this also doubles as an autoscroller level, and a boss level (the game ingeniously repeats this trick at the end with a shmup level where Mario pilots a plane to confront the final boss). Some of the usual themes are missing (no ice or fire worlds, for example) but some interesting themes are added (Oriental, Egyptian, mountainous, futuristic). The game also earns some points in my book for departing from the usual lazy Bowser-Peach thing; Tatanga is a very fresh central antagonist that is criminally underused, and I like how Daisy is explicitly portrayed as Mario's girlfriend. I also appreciate how this game continues the older trend of making Mario a jack of all trades (he pilots both a fighter plane and a submarine, there's a slight archaeology theme going on with Mario exploring pyramids and Easter Island and encountering Chinese zombies, there's a world with a distinct mountaineering feel to it, in another world he's fighting robots), I feel that current Mario suffers greatly from the lack of this element. Of course, Super Mario Land 2 had most of these positive qualities also, while far exceeding the minimum in most respects and having remarkable production values, but I wouldn't hold that against the original Super Mario Land personally.

I understand most of the issues you're bringing up with SML. But only from a modern perspective. To me, SML is simply how Mario on the Game Boy was supposed to look and feel. Especially the simpler graphics. This was the classic Game Boy and this is what it looked like. Later titles, like SML2, almost feel too much like ports of SNES titles, rather than "real" Game Boy games. Their graphics is almost "too detailed" for that little b/w screen. It just doesn't look right. Yes, of course, they do look so much better on a later GB model or even a SGB. But back in 1990, SML was just tailor-made for the original Game Boy.

This should have been the game that came with the GameBoy not Tetris. I would have gotten one that Christmas had it not been for that. No, I got my Sega Genesis with at the time was a perfect launch line-up. I got the pack-in Altered Beast, Space Harrier 2, Ghouls n' Ghosts, and Phantasy Star II when my parents could find it. I did play my friends GameBoy quite a bit though. I would bring my new Genesis and games over to his house so he could play them. While he was doing that I got acquainted with his GameBoy and tons of games...he had every launch game that year. Mario Land was one game I got to play quite extensively and I loved it. We'd be in his room with me sitting against the wall at the backside of his queen sized bed (ridiculous for a 10 year old) closest to the outlet. He would be at the edge playing my Genesis going through game after game..."the graphics are the best I'd ever seen!" Sometimes he would get ridiculous with it and pause the game while his character was engulfed in flames in Altered Beast. "Dude, dude, dude look at the freaking details!" All while I'm trying to play Super Mario Land. Those times were fun but annoying as well. He wound up getting his Genesis two months later on Feb of 1990 for his birthday and that was cool. I knew he loved mine so much and it brought him tons of happiness. After that he started letting me borrow his GameBoy and tons of games as long as I lent him one of my Genesis games which of course I always did. All of this changed when I got my Snes and Sega CD. I could lend out carts but my mom wasn't having any of this lending CD games and letting him barrow my 300 dollar Model 1 Sega CD was out of the question. She didn't care about the Snes but neither did he.

I think your assessment is spot on. While there is some fun to be had in Super Mario Land, everyone can agree that the next entries in the series are superior to this one. Super Mario Land 2 for example, would have better graphics and more precise controls along with better, more varied level design. By the way, I've got some more suggestions: I'd like to see more reviews on some more obscure 6th-gen games like Serious Sam, Armed & Dangerous, and even Sphinx and the Cursed Mummy on Xbox. :)

EX Heihachi Yeah same here, beat it the first day I bought it as a kid (I bought it in 2005 though, I'm young and played it on the gba). I won't lie, I did experience a game over because the controls took me a while to get used to

Such a bizarre game for the Mario series, and one that really got outclassed fast by its sequels. Its still fun but the controls are some of the wonkiest in the mainline series.

It struck me as really weird that you'd do a review on such an archaic game. I found it really unexpected that someone would go back so far to play something like this. Even back when the Gameboy was new, Super Mario Land 2 blew its predecessor out of the water (graphically, at the very least), and as a kid I expected everyone to abandon SML1 immediately. Still, it proved to be an interesting throwback! I never had a Gameboy, personally, but as a little kid I did once get a chance to briefly play this game on a friend's Gameboy. In fact, this review unexpectedly drew out an ancient memory: After trying the game and struggling with it (either for to inexperience or the shoddy controls), my friend took over and played through the entirety of the game with me looking over his shoulder. Or maybe I saw the rest of the game via maps in Nintendo Power magazine?... It's hard for me to say... memory can be a funny thing at times. :)

You mean to tell me that world 4 was the end of the game? I was not good enough at the game at 9 yrs old to beat the final boss. I guess I played about 99% of the game at least!

Great video, man. Super Mario Land is an ok game, and that's it. I really hate when I saw it being named one of the best GB games as there are plenty of great games on the system.

I know i a ma bit late with this. ( a whole year ) But I do think you are a tad harsh in regards to the graphics. Don't forget that this was one of the first Gameboy games around, and the first Mario game on the Gameboy. Nintendo was still figuring the Gameboy out themselves. So it's no wonder that the game looks rough. The original SMB looks very rough compared to SMB 2 and 3 as well.

It is, but I wonder how SMB 3 looked in Japan where Super Mario 2 had basically the same engine and graphics as SMB did. That must have been an astonishing leap as opposed to in the US where we got SMB 1, then Doki Doki Mario before SMB3.

I’ve always hated this game. Mario’s acceleration is off, as well as the gravity. Can’t go back to the left (just like in the original Mario bros). Music is terrible, especially the super star theme ripoff. You get punished for jumping on koopa troopas; why do they explode? The super ball is only useful in dungeon levels. Mario is supposed to be outside of the mushroom kingdom, but this new world might as well be our world, I don’t know why they even try to hide that fact. Growing up I swore this was a prototype for the original Mario bros. Mario Land’s sequels were the proper releases for the game boy.
