    I want It to feel like a collectable, like the music discs. I've spent hours collecting them and trading for them because they're cool, and I think whats so cool about them is that they're exclusive, have a purpose/ use, and most of all that you can get the full set. so that's really what I hope for archaeology to be like.

    I think regardless of how the feature eventually turns out, this will be something that gets kids from a new generation excited about archaeology. In the same way that the Indiana Jones movies or Channel 4's "Time Team" did when I was a kid. I think in the 'bare bones' state we saw it at Minecraft Live, it feels like a Minecraft Education Edition feature - or a feature for folks who like to explore their world and stumble upon stuff. The real trick is going to be making it relevant to players who prefer long-term survival Minecraft. I think your ideas for decoration make a lot of sense - comparing it to banners is a good call, and adding the 'texture' layer was definitely what sold me on it. I don't expect you'll get anything like diamonds out of it though, especially not during a cave update where you're encouraged to spend more time mining.

  • @SimplySarc

    @SimplySarc

    3 жыл бұрын

    That's going to be the challenge for sure. I actually think the general idea of archaeology makes a stupid amount of sense for a game about mining, but it's just gotta figure out how to offer long-term meaning and not only a quick endorphin rush.

    Ulraf, the dev who is leading this part of the update, has made loads of tweets about it and did an interview with several Minecraft KZreadrs. From what he's said, it sounds so much better than what we saw in MC Live. The diamond blocks and emerald blocks were just place holders for loads of different artifacts that and the shards are just some examples of what artifacts you could get. If you haven't seen the interview, search on KZreadr Ulraf and watch the video it's 4 hours long but its such an interesting video I highly recommend it for anyone who is a bit sceptical about archeology

    Facts. I hate economy servers, they all do it wrong. Back in the REALLY old days of minecraft, servers used gold bars and gold blocks as money. It was easy, correlates to real life gold value, and the game already had a way to give change back: Customer: I want this armor set for 2.4 gold blocks! I will pay you with 3 gold blocks Seller: Ok, here is your 5 gold ingots change! You actually had to be there if you were running a full time shop, to tend to customers, or you'd have to organize and meet up with someone who wanted to buy/sell to you one on one. Now economy servers are a hybrid of cancer slot machines, loot chests, and overpriced items that you use "Server money" to buy.

    To answer 4:19, there was a livestream with the lead designer/developer of the feature (Ulraf) where 4 youtubers were able to brainstorm some ideas with him and ask questions about 1.17 in general. There are fossils and ruins but there're little to no artifacts. The only artifact that I can confidently recall is the heart of the sea. And archeology expands on those ancient technology. In my opinion, this mechanic is fascinating since it gives you more options, especially with creative builds. For example, the ability to shave off layers of soil and gravel can make for more dynamic designs. And also those pots, they kinda make me excited. In conclusion, I think this feature will most likely be... just there. From the looks of it, it doesn't seem to have an extravagant role in playing the game, kind of like bees.

    I think archeology is definitely one of the most modded-feeling features they’ve added, but I think the stuff they’ve shown is amazing. I’m someone who wants to see the lore of Minecraft deepened, with lots of mysteries in the world. The clay pots are also good decorative blocks and I can’t think of another way they could implement decorating it unless they just copied the same formula of making banners, but perhaps they could add what you suggested in the future, with certain colors and patterns. Also Ulraf, the developer who seems to be in charge of archeology, has been hearing suggestions about archeology, and someone suggested we could find a skeleton dog through archeology, and Ulraf thought it was a great idea. He did also say in a livestream that archeology won’t be very large right now, but it will be expanded upon in future updates, like other parts of the game.

    Ulraf has answered several of these questions in his "Intentional Game Design" livestream, here are some of my notes: diamond and emerald blocks were placeholder loot. he wants the brush to have multiple uses, not just brushing dirt and gravel. he also doesn't want it to work on some specific blocks, where you press F3 to see if the dirt might contain artefacts or something. you can brush everywhere but you'll only get pottery shards in archeology sites. {my interpretation of this is that there's a loot table for brushing "anywhere" and a different one for brushing in sites}. he's not scared of automation and knows players will immediately make afk brushing farms. he gives the example that you could get lower tier stuff like bones everywhere, to give the player other means to farm resources. he's interested in the idea of display cases for archeological items, but item frames are too similar. he's interested in the idea that pots could contain one inventory slot and be smashable to get that item. he's thinking of making stuff that is usually inaccessible in peaceful accessible through archeology.

    So some quick ideas in regards to clay/ceramic pots. - Have them customizable in a crafting table, similar to how banners used to be. - Have different flames result in different final pots; regular fire creates earthenware with muted hues similar to terracotta while soul fire creates chinaware with bright, almost pastel hues. - Instead of an auction table, have Wandering Traders buy pots for various prices of Emerald Blocks, or even other artifacts.

    Ulraf said in the live stream with Xisuma, Cubfan and Etho that the brush will work anywhere in the world, which makes it a useful tool for entity manipulations in farms and for decorative landscaping purposes. You will get low value loot from non-archeological sites though. This makes the entire thing a bit like the Ex Nihilo mod. I doubt that advanced players will use it for its main intended purpose of finding goodies in dig sites, that's probably only done early in game... and depending on how rare the dig sites are, only if you happen to find such a site. Once you have progressed far enough you won't be interested in these dig sites that much if you happen to find one later in game. In general this announcement felt very odd and out of place during the otherwise very exciting Minecon Live event, it's just so not-vanilla-like. To break it down, the only thing we get out of it so far is a new tool that can shave off layers of only three basic blocks, dirt, sand and gravel. And a new decorative block, whose decorative mechanism seems to have been an afterthought. This isn't a lot considering the amount of scale this additional branch to the game requires. At least this would be just one more thing added to Minecraft that players rarely use. I really like the auction idea, the archeology mechanics desperately needs stuff like this to keep it interesting throughout the gameplay and become a part of the game for more players other than people who just started a world and need diamonds quick. I think what Mojang should rather do is concentrate on the core game mechanics and world generation, adding new mob mechanics that modders and market place creators can work with. When adding new themes to the game, they should do it big, like they did with the Aquatic, Village and Pillage and Nether updates. Not some tiny, half-baked mod-like mini structures... that should really be something a modder could add to the game. Yeah, Mojang should finally open up the game more to the modding scene, actively working together with the people behind Forge, Fabric, OptiFine, Sodium and the modders of the SciCraft community. Even though Ulraf is a nice and positive thinker and does well in interacting with the community, I would have loved to see them hire someone who developed mods that massively improve the core game or who created a modding API. Right now, Minecraft for me isn't playable without Fabric and several performance, inventory management and building improving mods.

  • @chondrya942
    @chondrya9423 жыл бұрын

    I have an idea that fits the history and storytelling aspect of archaeology but provides a real reward to going out and using the mechanic. In the code, during world gen, chunks have a slim chance to be “special” chunks, where there is some sort of bias in mob spawning. Maybe they have a higher chance of spawning with armor, maybe that armor is biased towards certain enchantments, maybe it gives really good fishing loot, or maybe diamonds generate more commonly. It’s all randomly chosen from a set of conditions upon world gen. You could never find a special chunk, though, at least without hours of testing or extreme luck. As with treasure maps and buried treasure, however, a special chunk always has an archaeology site near or associated with it. The loot you get from that archaeology site might inform you of what sort of spawning biases its associated chunk has to offer. You could then pinpoint the chunk (maybe by getting a map) and then use its special properties for your benefit if you choose to. With enough searching, you could find the perfect area to build that creeper farm you need, or an easier place to find diamonds, or an optimal enderman-hunting spot.

    @Cor Draconibus not really. Elytras and shields are things that you can equip and usefully use, and they fit the style of Minecraft. The nether update was actually welcomed, and although it’s unfamiliar to the old nether, it also kind of fits Minecraft’s aesthetic and feeling. The bees are probably the least tacky of all four of these; basically just another mob that goes around, and if you want you can get honey but they’re more just an ambient thing like bats or mildly useful like rabbits. The most uncomfortable and strange thing about the archeology, in my opinion, is the weird sifting you do where you shave off bits of the gravel. It’s just very strange and non-Minecrafty, and reminds me of what mods are like

    @@datonedood3791 Mojang has actually showed their support for automatic farms, even deliberately and knowingly buffed some of them. Why? Becuase optimization and automization are part of the beauty of Minecraft. While most of the game's items are locked behind a progress wall, players have worked out creative ways to optimize the game's mechanics to more easily obtain its vast amount of resources; and on the topic of Guardian farms, Prismarine and Sea Lanterns is something that is almost impossible to obtain in large amounts without them, which is something many players need for their builds. On the topic of XP, it takes impractical amounts of time and effort to get resources purely through exploration only. Your last statement, that exploring and farming both "give good exp," is widly innacurate. A guardian farm can give the player up to fifty levels of XP in three minutes. Do you have any idea how long it would take to do that through standard gameplay? Of course, there will always be the people who say, "fifty levels is unnecesary!" On the contrary, fifty levels is VERY neccesary when you take into account the immense of XP it takes to deal with enchantments; even with mending, you're going to have a bad time repairing your maxed out gear without a fast XP farm.
