    Flash back to the 80s. Remember the “Jerry Curl”. The hair was frequently sprayed with “activator” leave-in and the hair was in an almost constant damp state, where product even dripped from the hair. It was messy, but all ppl I personally knew with this style had thriving hair.

    Thank you so much for this information. I’ve heard stylists say that air drying causes hygral fatigue and something called “dry rotting” of the hair. When I hear these things I automatically think, then what did people do prior to the invention of a hair dryer? Certainly everyone didn’t have dry rotted hair. Thanks again.

    I'm not entirely sure but I think the issue is people with dense low porosity hair letting the hair and scalp stay wet for more than 8 hours. I have high porosity hair so my hair air dries very quickly. I think the ancestors sat by the fire until the hair was dry or in the tropics the heat will dry almost anything in an hour: laundry, plants, your hair.

    Back in the day when I took really good care of my hair, l never had negative side effects from air drying my ponytail and 2-side cornrows, using a pressing comb, curling iron, flat iron, blow dryer, and hard hat bonnet dryer. But, back in the day we didn't suffocate our hair with so much and with many products like they're doing today. 🤷🏾‍♀️

    Thank you for providing clarifying on this topic. I do all I can to take care of my hair with wash and goes, and it is thriving. I regularly air dry my hair because I live on the west coast, and my 4C hair is not dense. Therefore it doesn’t take all day for my hair to dry. I appreciate all of the knowledge you impart in the natural hair care space. Thank you.

    There was a time that YT content creators advised that air drying wasn’t healthy for our hair and it made no sense whatsoever to me. I am a 4 hair type that is relaxed I shampoo daily only applying a light shampoo to the scalp and I use instant conditioner. I’ve even tried washing 2x daily (with my morning and evening shower) for experimental purposes only. I use instant conditioner, no heat . I throw it into a loosely braided ponytail that I leave braided or unbraid from a beautiful loose wave. My hair has grown exponentially. Everyday is a good hair day. I wish I knew about this my entire life.

    There are definitely some KZreadrs that say that air drying regularly is harmful because it leaves the hair wet for too long, resulting in hygral fatigue.

  • @Gladiator_in_a_Suit

    Hygral fatigue does not exist, that’s just something they came up with to buy their products, you can’t over wet naturally dry hair. I’ve been air drying my hair for 7 years nothing bad has happened to it. I only listen to Dickey those other people lie a lot.

    Here's my thoughts Dickey, theirs a Sister on utube, who is a hair tracohologist she says keeping your hair wet all day long is harmful to the hair shaft. The hair bonds need to be closed back and we're putting too much products on hair when doing the wash and goes. I'm following her protocol for 6 months to see what happens. My thoughts are back in the day and In Africa etc. Some of them in rural areas don't have access to hair dryers or blow dryers? So please make all this make sense. I wish and and Cyn Doll would have a collaboration to fix this situation once and for all. So much conflicting info in the Natural hair community. PLZ HELP US SISTER, COMI TOGETHER AND DO A Forum ON U Tube PLZ.

My hair is fine either way and like you have said..water is it's friend! There are vloggers who say wash and gos are harmful to natural hair. I have been doing only wash and gos for over 2 years and my hair is fine. Your thoughts on this??

    Thank you Dickey! And thank you to the person who asked the question. It answered my question about hygral fatigue because of the hair swelling and unswelling. The video also helped me LET GO of what is supposed to be versus what works for me. In the summer, letting it air dry before I go to work works well for me. Air drying with the window down also helped me decide what products are good for me. The Doux's Bee Girl holds the cast very well compared to other products so my hair is dry and in tact as soon as go to work. I no longer feel guilt for not redoing my wash and go because I don't have time to dry it. And in the fall and winter months, I just do my method at night😁

    How do we keep our ends from splitting/popping off when they dry first in prolonged wash n go styling frequently?

  • @marleyhill34

    @marleyhill34

    Ай бұрын

    I think if your ends are getting damaged easily: 1. Wash and go's might not be a good style choice for your hair type. 2. You need to strengthen with protein and Olaplex. 3. You might need to seal your ends with oil/silicone/grease. 4. You are doing too much manipulation to get the definition. Or 5. You need a trim. My example, i do not wear wash and go's exclusively. I have fine and fragile hair. Daily raking, shingling and brushing is too much. I only wear wash and go's in the summer when the air is less dry where i live. I do not rake or shingle my hair and I only shampoo, deep condition and detangle my hair once a week. Every other time, I use a hair mist and gently use my had to rub it in and I let the curls/coils form as they are. Defined or undefined. Occssionally if I'm going out to an event I might define/finger coil a few of the curls/coils around my hairline but i never define my entire hair. I use protein twice a month and I seal my ends. I get a trim every 12-16 weeks and dust every 6 weeks at home. The rest of the seasons, i keep my ends tucked in from the elements. I do not believe that the ends drying first is what damages them.

    I live in a highly hot and humid industrial city so, I do two things; I used a strong hold gel and I don't go beyond 7 days. By doing these, the strong hold gel made sure my hair isn't coiling into each other and by not going beyond 7 days, I get it hydrated as often as possible. However, if your hair is Coily, you'll still experience it.
