Is a £114 chain lube really worth it? Graphenlube tried and tested

Спорт

In a very scientific* test, we pit different types of chain lubes against each other to see if graphenlube really can match it's claimed savings...

Love the idea of the lube lasting so long between needing to reapply, then occurred that unless riding in a vacuum sealed room, the dust and dirt from riding couple of hundred k’s that will sit on the chain will presumably negate the gains to below the performance of a cleaned and re-lubed chain with cheaper dry lube? The advice made in the video appears is spot on - avoid having a dirty chain...

I just applied some to my YBN gold chain, used, about 0.5 on the wear gauge. Letting it drip dry until tomorrow. So cleaning is just wiping down and applying a bit more? What if a full degrease is needed? Does it have to be reapplied via the bag after?

GRAPHENlube is made in POland by the way. It will not last claimed 1800km, due to the weather factor. I use small bottle, (the large one its a waste anyway, because you need to wipe out excess of the lube from chain) and just apply on each chain link, ride few times, and re-apply and for at least 1000km don't have to worry about it.

You mentioned cleaning the new chain with white spirits, could you use a chain degreaser and get the same results?

I can't cite the source (maybe Oz cycles?) but it was suggested that leaving chains overnight in certain powerful degreasers can effect the chain's steel. I'd use petrol then rinsing with water or IPA.

Great video. Any thoughts on pinion + belt combination? I'm gonna buy this @t bicycle. No lube, no dirt, no problems :D I'm really tired of how much money, time and effort is spent on rear derailleur drivetrain system! I assume pinion + belt will be a great combination!

Could be interesting to see the performance difference over time and especially on the road where dirt etc is involved. Perhaps not ride 3000km but certainly doing a test after a week of cycling and not cleaning or re-lubing the chain. You can buy two small bottles for £30 incl. delivery

That would be even better, but the gap between wax lube and graphene lube was bigger than the gap between the new chain and wax lube, which was the 4th lube tested. If the chain was just getting loosened up, you would expect the gaps to get smaller, so the test still suggests the graphene lube is better than wax.

@@Mrich775 no it wld take a pretty sensitive set of legs to do that. You won't tell if a lube is 1 or 3w faster, but what u will tell is the cleanliness and greater parts longevity (don't get me started on oz cycle test which had his blend as longer lasting, for details on the huge flaws in that test refer to document on zerofrictioncycling.com.au in instructions tab). Main thing I see all the time is by the time ppl get different ingredients delivered from different places, they are often at a similar price to msw, but using a much capper quality and dirtier wax, and also 50 grams ptfe per batch is hugely wasteful, beyond a small amount being added the rest just has nearly no impact, hence why race chains are dry powdered post wax break in vs just bunging more ptfe in the wax. It was tested and tested back in friction facts / ufo days. Oz cycle has no data nor way to assess so just went with a huge amount to be safe. There's facts, and then back yard guessing passed off as good testing. I know he seems like a nice guy trying to do a good thing by cyclists, but in the end he is adding to the huge amount of crap miss information ppl have to wade through before they might find proper information, and remember he gets paid more for more traffic hence the vastly increase views by having his wax supposedly beating msw (it doesnt in the real world when one re waxes with msw at correct intervals so chain isn't rusting.... Ffs...) and also the crack pot postulations re moly and corrosion... So yeah, its fine, but real facts and better products are well.... Better... And one is supporting facts great little companies making great products and not supporting more miss information clogging up you tube
