Thanks. 1) For irrecoverable debts, we Cr SLCA and Dr Bad debt, do we just leave the sales (income) account with the original value in, even though we never get this income? 2) how do you move a doubtful debt to an irrecoverable one if it turns into one?

Do you mean the individual customers accounts? These are just subsidiary accounts so they don’t form part of the double entry or the SOP&L or SOFP

@@caroline8029 No I mean the sales account in the main ledger. Remember the sale is also credited to the sales account. So when the Sales ledger control account is credited and the irrevocable account is debited what happens to the entry made in the sales account? thank you

@@mrchineduOfficial ah yes I see what you mean. I think the sale there remains showing in the SOP&L but the irrecoverable debt then shows as a negative figure to offset it? I think?

Why is the accounting for doubtful debts so much more complicated than irrecoverable debts. I don’t understand why the adjustment account is needed? Can’t the double entry just be credit the SPL with the adjustment amount and debit the allowance for doubtful debt liability account with the same amount?
