Grit! Earlier that year (1998), 77-kg weightlifter Zlaten Vanev (Bulgaria) had dislocated his arm attempting a 205.5-kg world record clean and jerk. Some months later, IronMind’s Randall Strossen was on site in the Bulgarian Weightlifting Federation’s training hall and captured Vanev cleaning 210 kg five times, only to miss the jerk each time-all under the watchful eye of fabled coach Ivan Abadjiev. You can experience the five attempts here-the 170-lb. Vanev attacking 463 lb.! And if you want to be reminded of what persistence looks like when you’re training, you’ll find the story and Strossen’s photo of Vanev again missing the jerk after cleaning the same 210 kg on IronMind’s Grit poster, now available in the IronMind e-store (www.ironmind-store.com/Zlaten-.... By the way, about a week later, Vanev won the World Weightlifting Championships. Also, Vanev went on to dislocate or break his arms two more times in his weightlifting career, the most disappointing being as he was in his final preparations for the 2000 Olympics. Talk about being forged in fire!

Fun fact: he was one of Abadjiev favourites because he was one of the few of that team that really enjoy being tortured by the bulgarian system. It is known that a lot of his teammates were cheating and lying bout sets and reps done because it was so much intensity that even with a ton of drugs they were feeling pain every day. But this straight up psychopath 😂 really was one of the very few that never lied, cheated and discuss with Ivan, a true insane and powerful mind and body. One of my favourites lifters in history for sure
