Ironhead Studio's Incredible Movie Costumes

Ғылым және технология

This is a rare treat: we get up close with the helmets and armor made by Ironhead Studio for films like Batman v Superman, Captain America: Civil War, and Tron: Legacy. Ironhead Studio founder Jose Fernandez, who has been designing and making film costumes for decades, chats with us about how superhero costume fabrication has evolved over the years.

    That's appalling he didn't get a screen credit. Quite often caterers and assistants get a credit, where as creatives who shape the look of the film get none. In some weird karma, the movie isn't getting the best reception, so I hope this guy gets the credit he deserves for the aesthetics of the piece

    +JurassicCollectables I'd imagine that screen credits are handled like compensation. I know that's why most other workers even get a credit. Their unions have gained the credit by contract. Even actors negotiate how they are credited along with their pay. Still a shame that his studio wasn't mentioned as the costume design was probably the best part of that movie!

    +Dimitri Bitu Well this is a wild ass guess, but considering that I frequently see prop companies in the credits for movies, I'm guessing that he didn't get that in his contract with the studios. Whether that's because he couldn't get it, or he is just not good at negotiation, I can't tell. Either way he seems pretty butthurt for a guy that seems to be getting plenty of work, so clearly the right people have heard of his work.

    +bragr1 "Either way he seems pretty butthurt for a guy that seems to be getting plenty of work, so clearly the right people have heard of his work." I think it's that, from the point of view of an artist, having someone use your work without crediting you is a bit like that person claiming to be the one who made it. Sure it's not the end of the world when it's a quick drawing that no one cared about, but when you put a lot of work into it, it's good to get that recognition, that when people think of xyz, they think of you.

  • @GuyWithAnAmazingHat

    @GuyWithAnAmazingHat

    8 жыл бұрын

    +Charzey How much is a 'shit load' of money? Let's say, you mean becoming a millionaire, which is practically impossible for any artist in the film industry who isn't an actor, director or producer. In fact most artists get paid less than office jobs and freelancers don't have a stable income, a single commission takes a huge amount of time and effort and you'll have to start looking for another one quickly before you run out of money. And to get that next job, you need to be credited and recognised. To an artist, credit is everything, it is more important than money. To get money and more importantly, remain motivated, you need recognition, which comes with creditation.

    If you are working as an artist you can sign over your rights to the work and don't have to be given credit. as a result you make more money because *insert artists name* is not attached to the work. this happens in allot of collaborative efforts. the reason you get more money is because they want to buy the rights to the artwork that you are making so that the artist cant sell replicas/ reproductions. as a result once the artist steps away they wont always give him/her credit for the work. I don't know if this is 100% true for props but I know in the 2d arts world it is 100% true and id assume it carries over. if you want credit your not making the extra bank. I was advised while getting my degree that in an instance like this you can put on your resume that you worked with blah on blah and explain what you'd done but posting on a website or showcasing is something you'd ask for permission to do because *again* you sold the rights to the work.

    Javier Cardenas Exactly, licensing and then royalties keep these guys from the real cut and money. There's a reason why accredited guys other than WETA are not enterprising and selling this work as genuine replicas. All companies need to follow precedent. I suppose it could cut the price for collectors too. Doubt it since comic book companies take huge cuts, even more than actors for certain statues or them bring involved in measurements
