Iron and Wine - "Hard Times Come Again No More"

Музыка

Iron and Wine's cover of a classic American folk song called "Hard Times Come Again No More". This cover was made to be used in trailers for BBC's series "Copper". There used to be a full version of the song on KZread but now it is gone, so I have resurrected it.
Please do not remove this BBC, it deserves to be heard.
I have AIDS.

This song was sung at the height of the Depression in the 1930s. Imagine singing about counting your blessings and hoping patiently for an end to poverty. Very moving.

It's a pre-civil war song about the "hard times" that came on the cotton farmers in the late 40's.

While I agree with you that it is very moving, but waiting patiently for an end to poverty is about the dumbest thing a human being can do. As explained in "The Preacher and the Slave".

The first time I heard this was the night before I went to rehab in 2013. There was such pain in my heart from my family finding out that I had been spending 100 a day on hydros and oxy. The worst part was that I had stolen from and lied to the people I love the most. I wasn’t even looking for this song I just heard it on a commercial. I played it in a loop for the rest of the night. I sang it in the shower in rehab. Now when I come back to it all those emotions just flood me and help me to remember why I left that life behind. Thank you for posting this as it was incredibly hard to find for a few years

This song makes me grateful i grew up poor. Hard times are a lot easier when they were part of your upbringing, and you can still be happy and grateful for what you do have.

Beautiful rendition of one of the most timeless and enduring songs of all times. Those a composed piece, it sings and sounds like the the most authentic of folks tunes from the soul of humanity.

Personally, a favourite song of mine, I remember watching the 1984 television version of A Christmas Carol with my Grandmother when I was a child barely eight years old. I also remember her telling me about her childhood as the daughter of a sharecropper in the southeastern United States in 1930s-1940s. This song, by Stephen Foster, which asks it's listener to consider the plight of the less fortunate: absolutely does it's job. The fact that Stephen Foster, who, because of his anti-slavery views, caused his music to be despised and hated by his fellow Southerners, died in abject poverty, makes this song, I suppose, perhaps a bit tragically poetic: though I do not say that with any satisfaction or joy.

Let us pause in life's pleasures and count its many tears While we all sup sorrow with the poor There's a song that will linger forever in our ears Oh, hard times, come again no more 'Tis the song, the sigh of the weary Hard times, hard times, come again no more Many days you have lingered all around my cabin door Oh, hard times, come again no more While we seek mirth and beauty and music light and gay There are frail forms fainting at the door Though their voices are silent, their pleading looks will say Oh, hard times, come again no more 'Tis the song, the sigh of the weary Hard times, hard times, come again no more Many days you have lingered all around my cabin door Oh, hard times, come again no more There's pale drooping maiden who toils her life away With a worn out heart, whose better days are over Though her voice it would be merry, 'tis sighing all the day Oh, hard times, come again no more 'Tis the song, the sigh of the weary Hard times, hard times, come again no more Many days you have lingered all around my cabin door Oh, hard times, come again no more 'Tis the song, the sigh of the weary Hard times, hard times, come again no more Many days you have lingered all around my cabin door Oh, hard times, come again no more

With respect, you left out a bit (my favorite verse of the song): It’s a sigh that is wafted across the troubled wave, It’s a wail that is heard upon the shore It’s a dirge that is murmured around the lowly grave Oh! Hard times come again no more.

Nice rendition of an American classic. Technically, btw, this is not a "folk song." It has a known composer, none other than the "father of American music" Stephen Foster.
