For the record, bourbon is still whiskey. For a whiskey to be called bourbon, it must meet five criteria: 1. Made in the United States 2. Minimum of 51% corn in the mash bill 3. Aged in NEW charred oak barrels at 125 proof or less 4. Minimum 80 proof in the bottle 5. No additives except water to adjust proof. Not even artificial coloring.

It is supposed to have simple syrup. What they made was not a proper mint julep. I find 2:1 ratio of bourbon to simple syrup is good. Easy to make dangerously smooth juleps. Muddle mint at bottom. A lot of crushed ice. Big sprigs of mint to garnish. No splash of water.

Traditionally a Manhattan, an Old Fashioned, and a Whiskey Sour are all made with rye not bourbon. I find the rye preferable. Also, a Mint Julep is traditionally made with brandy, not bourbon. (I wouldn't go around saying that at the Kentucky Derby though, if you know what I mean).

@@aprilvoecks5877 Yes, there is sweet, dry, and perfect. Although, with cocktails that have been around over 100 years there is also many more variations, some of which were all ready being printed well before 1940. The Savoy Cocktail book from 1930, for example lists 4 types of Manhattans: a Manhattan Cocktail (No.1), a Manhattan Cocktail (No. 2), as well as a Dry Manhattan cocktail, and a Sweet Manhattan cocktail.

If I am ever in Ireland, I am going to come and make “American” cocktails for you. You should invite an actual bartender to come and mix drinks for you. Anyone who says an old fashioned isn't made with bourbon is an idiot. An old fashioned is made with any whiskey you want. Bourbon is a type of whiskey. I prefer a rye old fashioned, because I don't like bourbon. Also, a Manhattan was originally made with rye, not bourbon. But, as with an old fashioned, you can make it with whatever kind of whiskey you want. It's basically a modified old fashioned, substituting sweet vermouth for the sugar and water. Also, also, that Manhattan recipe was a variant rather than the original. A "traditional" Manhattan doesn't use orange bitters. I would have suggested trying a "Perfect Manhattan" which uses half sweet vermouth, half dry vermouth. Ciara asking if the bourbon sour was a Tom Collins...yes, pretty much. The bourbon sour is just made with bourbon instead of gin, and it doesn't have soda water.

*Deep Breath* OK, "whiskey" is generally defined as any spirit distilled from grain which is then aged in wooden barrels. Thus; bourbon is whiskey, Scotch is whiskey, Rye is whiskey, they all just use different grains in different proportions and are aged in different barrels. Bourbon is aged in charred new American oak, scotch is usually aged in barrels that once held bourbon, there's all kinds of variety within the category but IT IS ALL WHISKEY (OR WHISKY, WHATEVER).

For clarification, bourbon is whiskey. Bourbon is still a distilled spirit made from grain and aged in barrels, much like Irish whiskey or Scotch. There are lots rules defining what is and isn't bourbon from a legal perspective, but the main ones are: 1. Made in USA. 2. 51% corn mash bill. 3. Aged in new (unused) oak barrels. Also for these cocktails, many drinkers would prefer using rye (whiskey) instead of bourbon. Rye being a whiskey with at least 51% rye in the mash bill.

0:39 that looks like very similar to Wisconsin’s state drink, the Brandy Old Fashioned. Differences between it and a traditional Old Fashioned are: Brandy instead of Bourbon, brown sugar or simple syrup instead of white sugar, the orange is muddled, cherry syrup is also used, and Sprite, Sierra Mist, or Squirt are used to top it off instead of water. Here’s a video idea for the channel: do all 50 US States’ official drink. That’ll give you 10 videos by doing 5 drinks per video!
