    I live in Kentucky right in the heart of the Bourbon trail. Need to see an Office Blokes try a trip to Kentucky and do the Bourbon trail. There's tours that take you to all the big distilleries and you get absolutely plastered trying all their different bourbons.

    Buffalo Trace and Eagle Rare start out with the same Corn-Rye-Barley mash bill beer....aging and location of aging is different...Weller is a Wheated bourbon no rye in mash. Weller is not as spicy...so bourbon newbies will gravitate to it. Sour Mash for both...so Scotch has always tasted sweeter to me.

    So funny to watch you guys! Lol. 1. Bourbon doesn’t have to be made in Kentucky! Just the USA 2. Jack Daniels meets the requirements for bourbon, they just call themselves Tennessee whiskey 3. All three of those bottles are produced at the same distillery, Buffalo Trace distillery 4. Eagle rare would be single barrel, they just don’t clean out the pipes between barrels, so each Eagle rare bottle can slightly vary. 5. The Weller IS different from the the other two, the mashbill is corn/wheat/malted barley as opposed to corn/rye/malted barley. Great video and always nice to see new people try bourbon, a product that I am so passionate about. Cheers guys!

    Its pretty funny that you can easily purchase those 3 bottles in the UK. I live in the US (Pennsylvania) and if I'm lucky I can find Buffalo Trace once every two weeks if I looked hard enough at our local state run liquor stores. It sells so fast they don't even put it on the shelves, they keep it behind the counter and you have to ask for it. Eagle Rare I can find maybe once every two months, it's much harder to find. And I will never be able to purchase anything Weller ever in Pennsylvania, it is very allocated. But you picked 3 really good bourbons to try for the first time. You guys are correct, bourbon is much sweeter then scotch. Bourbon by law has to be at least 51% corn (mash bill) and the corn makes the whiskey taste sweeter. Bourbon also has to be aged in a new (unused) charred American oak barrel, that also imparts sweetness and bourbons typical mahogany like color. Cheers Gentleman

    Fun fact Weller is made out of another FAMOUS Bourbon Pappy Van Winkle. The story is that the recipe that makes Weller 12 year didn't quite make the cut for Pappy Van Winkle Lot B 12 year. That's why many say it as close to Pappy as you can get for a whole lot less. Also why Weller is just as hard to find as Pappy because stores can't keep them on their shelves long enough.

  • @Cdubp01

    @Cdubp01

    3 жыл бұрын

    That’s just hype. The ONLY similarity is that they use the same mash bill. But pappy is overrated anyhow-the real pappy juice ran out years ago. Weller SR is a good $20 bottle-but that’s as far as it should go. Antique 107 is a step up, but paying more than $40 is just ridiculous. Sooo many better bourbons for the price of what Weller goes for these days. Now that Eagle rare on the other hand-that’s a proper good drink for $30 a bottle.

    Here goes... Nut-shelled: Bourbon is whisky that is made with water containing high levels of limestone. That's what the main difference between whisky and bourbon is. Kentucky is one of the few places with a limestone content high enough in the water to produce bourbon. I think Scotland may be another place that meets that criteria as well. I prefer bourbon over whisky but both are good.

  • @mattdollus

    @mattdollus

    3 жыл бұрын

    The is no limestone in the water. The limestone merely filters impurities from the water. All bourbon is whiskey. Not all whiskey is bourbon. Bourbon must be at least 51% corn, produced in the U.S., aged on new charred oak barrels, distilled at no more that 160 proof, enter the barrel at no more than 125 proof , and bottled at no less than 80 proof. The primary difference between bourbon and other whiskey is the corn.

    I live about 35 miles (56 km) from Buffalo Trace, and I have taken the tour of the distillery several times. I am not originally from Kentucky, but I consider bourbon to be the finest whiskey in the world. My reason for saying so is that you can buy bourbons that range from 80 proof to 140 proof or higher. The grains used are corn (51% min), rye and malted barley OR the rye (in a very few cases) is replaced with wheat. Weller has wheat in place of rye. No other ingredients are permitted. There are other restrictions, but I will allow you to search this up yourselves. Personally, I prefer the bourbons with a high rye content, so here are my suggestions for you: Knob Creek (the only Jim Beam product that I like), Four Roses Single Barrel, Bulleit, Wild Turkey Rare Breed (barrel proof), Russell's Reserve (single barrel), Fighting Cock, and, last but not least, Evan Williams Bottled in Bond (100 proof).

    As Pedantic79 has said all three of those bourbons are from the same distillery, Buffalo Trace Distillery in Frankfort Kentucky. Buffalo Trace and Eagle Rare (10yr) are from the same Mash but are at different age and the aging varies as does the level in the aging warehouses. To make the best bourbons you must carefully control the temperatures and timing and season exposure. The Weller is of a different mash as you guys noted being more wheated. But also of different age and aging process. If you liked the Weller you should try the 12 year. If you liked the Eagle Rare 10 yr. you should try the 17yr. The Buffalo Trace bourbon is 6 to 8yr. and is the distilleries base bourbon. I grew up near there in Lexington, Ky and am very familiar with many of the Kentucky distilleries. If you guys come to the States you should definitely do the bourbon trail as Stephen Proffitt says. I like the 10yr Eagle Rare myself. Although any of their bourbons except for Buffalo Trace are often hard to come by. The best I've had is George T. Stagg but I've never had the opportunity or deep enough pockets to try a Van Winkle. Do a music react to Home Free doing Man of Constant Sorrow.

    An interesting note about bourbon is that it's kind of like champagne...in order for it to technically be called bourbon, it has to come from Bourbon County, Kentucky. Otherwise, it's just a whiskey. Another interesting fact is that the best American bourbon/whiskey comes from Kentucky and Tennessee. This geographic area has a ton of caves with natural mineral springs, and it's widely regarded that this water is what makes the whiskey of this area so good. Also, American whiskey/bourbon will be a bit sweeter than scotch whiskey because of the corn mash.

  • @kurtrohlfing5850

    The common theme was I was expecting more smoke. Bourbon is casted in freshly charred Oak barrels. Because of this they still will give off the oak taste. When the bourbon is done those barrels are shipped overseas and filled with scotch by then most of the oak taste is gone and you can only get a nice Oak flavor from really old scotch.

    Glad to see you enjoyed these three Buffalo Trace products! Funny thing is that these used to be easily available here in the states a few years ago, now they are all pretty hard to find. The only one you may see is actual Buffalo Trace. Eagle Rare is the most expensive of the three at retail ($34 in Maine) and is aged 10 years and close to a single barrel product. The Weller is actually the cheapest at around $25, however because of its popularity it is going for around $100 on the secondary market! All three also make a killer Old Fashioned cocktail.

    I love Eagle Rare. I don’t know of anyone else who does this, but get a thick sweet American stout and add a little bourbon to it. My god it is fantastic.

    Those are good but not my favorites. The Bourbon Trail stretches quite a ways. Would love to see you try some others. As a KY native, I really love Woodford, Elijah Craig, Four Roses and Willett's. You guys would love the Bourbon Festival in Bardstown, held every year in September. If you ever make it, I'd come all the way from Ashland to drink with you men. Enjoy. You've just scratched the surface.

    Three Brands same distillery. The sweetness that your getting is in fact what makes it bourbon. Its made with Kentucky Limestone water. That licorice hint is in fact the rye content of the bourbon. The higher the rye content the more spiced it tastes.

    Bourbon tasting tips from a native Kentuckian: Always smell before sipping (a couple drops of water helps to fully release the bouquet), hold it on your tongue for a few seconds & inhale before swallowing, and having a bite of premium dark chocolate before tasting a different bottle will cleanse your palate. Doing these things will help you experience the full flavor profiles. My go-to bourbons are Four Roses Small Batch and Woodford Reserve Double Oaked. Cheers!

    Underrated? Lol. Tell that to the folks that clear the shelves the moment it comes in. But I’ll agree, it’s a dang fine juice. I’m jealous of these foreign countries that have shelves fully stocked of ER, Blantons, etc because of the lack of demand across the pond.

    Jack Daniel’s is my brand. Suits my taste buds. Back in the day (decades ago), when Jack was less of a thing, couldn’t tell ya how disappointed I was when they’d not have it and offer a more “exclusive,” more expensive whiskey. I’d always go with the cheapest stuff that was, or closer to, a sour mash...much to the consternation of the bartender.

    At 107 proof Weller gives you alot less distilled water with your whiskey. Another reason why the color with Weller is richer is the less added water.
