More than half of the irish squad were english(or welsh or scotish), but because of some irish heritage they were invited to play for Rep of Ireland, as they were not good enough to play for England(or Scotland the case of Houghton). By 80s, Rep of Ireland was by far, inferior in football to all the 4 home football nations(England, Scotland, Wales, North Ireland). Jackie Charlton(who has just passed away), an english, used any strategy to create a strong team in Rep of Ireland.

I'm from Poland and I like both countries and both teams, but in that tournament I supported Ireland. Maybe for the Euro 1988, where they defeated England (England is our football nightmare) and the Soviets (Russia is our historical nightmare). Many people in Poland became the fans of the Irish team those years. So, our nations like each other for many, many years earlier. Greets from Poland, Irish friends, you had a great national team those times :-)

Charlton, I doubt, ever expected this job to change his life. He certainly never expected it would change everyone's life in Ireland who were lucky enough to be alive to see it. They were the greatest days I can remember. A totally, unified country urging these boys on with every song. I am so glad he took to Ireland as much as we did to him. He gave us so many amazing nights, rest in peace Jack. I saw an Ireland scarf draped over his coffin today beside his England scarf, a lovely touch.

I flew to Rome the previous evening, got a train up overnight to Genoa, queued up for six hours in the scorching sun for tickets along with my brother in law and thousands of other Irish fans. All well worth the wait for the glorious moment when Dave O'Leary scored that winning penalty. A day to remember and the craic in the centre of Genoa that night was unbelievable, even the Italian police realised there was no point in trying to enforce the drinks ban that night and not a hint of trouble from any of the Irish fans. Great day that won't be forgotten for a long time by anyone lucky enough to have been there.

Not only did the big JC drag our country to international competitions, but he also dragged our country out of recession. When he arrived in 1986 our country was on its knees with depression and REAL poverty all around, Jack brought the feel good factor. “The feel good factor” comes about when people feel inspired and are happy to spend the little few pennies they have on food, drink and irish paraphernalia as was the case during these really bleak times. This props up and builds a strong economy. We became proud of who we were, worked harder and realized anything was possible in life. This also inspired others ie Carruths and O’Sullivans gold medals and countless Eurovision winners etc. We got into the habit of winning continuously throughout the nineties which then led to the Celtic tiger. It wasn’t a bunch of clever/corrupt politicians that dragged this country into economic superiority, but us irish people in spite of their brainless decisions. We bulldozed our way through the last recession to again achieve economic superiority and we will again in spite of this covid crisis. But it all began with the spark Jack Charlton and the boys in green lit in euro 88 Thanks lads and thanks to those great fans of the 80’s and 90’s who inspired our boys in green. You’ll never beat the Irish.

As a Leeds fan, I still can't believe that we let Jack get away! He only ever played for us and was a very good manager and yet he's one of the few out-and-out Revie greats who never managed Leeds. Charlton was the best manager of all the Revie boys, then probably Giles, and then Bremner, and yet we only ever employed one of them! Charlton's one of the big what-ifs in Leeds history.

@@IsCumaFut2 not as hope-you must be joking? Was there the same hysteria for that game at Twickenham? The same euphoric scenes up and down the nation? Ireland came to a halt did it? For rugby, not a hope.A minority as against the world game watched by millions, in case you don't know the football world cup is the biggest sports even on the planet and logically for the Republic of Ireland to even advance that far against strong teams was a huge achievement, they did reach 7 in the fifa rankings. So in a nutshell comparatively rugby is only small change.when you see Ireland doing well in Rugby it's hardly great news is it? A sport played by a handful of nations where it's only number 1 in a small nation, new Zealand. Rugby doesn't capture nations like football or never will, anywhere. Even where I live now near toulouse rugby doesn't really appeal, nearby the town of gaillac was famed for rugby nowadays not so much. When the rugby world cup was on,we're the bars full? No. During 2018 football world cup they were packed and had a wonderful festive atmosphere, rugby will never capture that. Stephen Roche winning the tour de France in 87 would surpass rugby even.

One thing that's struck me watching all of this is the respect from George Hamilton throughout. Not once did he call Pat Bonner, Packie Bonner. I've always known and remembered about his effort to pronounce names based on their local pronunciation but hadn't copped he was respectfully using the formal names of our players as opposed to nicknames. A broadcasting legend. And by all accounts a very nice fella

Great days!!

I was a 22 year old Irish man at the opposite end of the stadium it was magical two growing men hugging and crying Infront of me then they turned to me and began hugging me..i almost cried too such a wonderful memory..it was at least 30 minutes before any of the Irish fans left the stadium.. when I did i took a bus to the city centre of Genoa it took me an hour because I was so excited i wasn't able to focus on where I was suppose to get off . I had to take the same bus three times before I finally got to the centre..

It's hard to understand why Balint and Popescu didn´t take a penalty in the shoot-out. Instead, the NT coach Ienei ordered Daniel Timofte to take one, when he was a nobody in the national team and had entered the game as reserve. I don´t get it. The absence of Lacatus was crucial too, since he was an expert penalty taker.

This is a day that every Irish man should remember if you were born at this time!?! I’ll never forget it!?! The first time we ever qualified for any major tournament and we managed to get to the quarterfinals of the World Cup!?! It was an amazing time!?! And I actually met Jack Charlton a few years ago in balina while he was fishing and I spoke to him!?! He was an honorary Irishman and will be remembered as Ireland’s greatest manager!?! Rip big jack!?! Gone but not forgotten!?! 😢

Watched this when I was 6! Gives me goosebumps watching it! After watching Packie save that penalty my whole house went mad! My dad was so used to Ireland losing, this was a golden period. Jumping around for ten minutes. Then I ran outside to my garden, and began blessing myself, and pretended to be Packie saving that Romanian penalty time and time again....... Almost brings a tear to my eye. Great memories.
